TOKYO: Japan's National Police Agency on Friday said a nationwide operation targeting online sexual exploitation of children was carried out in February and March, leading to the arrests of 111 people aged 14 to 68, Kyodo News Agency reported.
The operation focused on offenses related to online child pornography and sexual abuse, marking Japan's first participation in an international investigation coordinated with five countries, including Singapore and South Korea, as well as Hong Kong.
Some of the arrests in Japan were made based on information shared through international cooperation, according to the agency, emphasizing the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation in addressing online child exploitation.
The joint investigation was conducted from Feb. 24 to March 28, leading to the arrests of 544 individuals aged 13 to 68 across Japan and other countries and regions, according to the agency.
Arrests in Japan stem from cases including public display and possession of child pornography. Among the 111 arrested were high school teachers, prep school lecturers and company employees, along with teenage students.
The agency said it would continue to strengthen international cooperation in efforts to combat such crimes.
