GENEVA: The Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised alarms over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, stating that 75 per cent of United Nations (UN) missions have been denied access to the region due to an ongoing Israeli blockade and attacks, Palestine News and Info Agency (WAFA) reported.
During a weekly press briefing, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned of the strict blockade imposed by Israel, which has been in effect since March 2.
The blockade has halted the entry of essential supplies, including food and medicine, exacerbating the crisis for Gaza's civilian population.
The UN official warned that the restrictions have left families facing hunger, malnutrition, and a lack of clean water, shelter, and proper medical care. These conditions are significantly increasing the risk of disease and death among the population.
He also underscored the continuing assaults on Gaza's health infrastructure, noting that more than 400 humanitarian workers have been killed since October 2023.
One particularly deadly incident occurred on March 23, when an Israeli strike targeted a medical and emergency convoy, killing 15 health and aid personnel.
Ghebreyesus reiterated the urgent calls for the immediate lifting of the blockade, protection of health services, unimpeded humanitarian access across the region, the resumption of daily medical evacuations, and, above all, an immediate ceasefire to end the suffering.
