ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan were each sentenced to 14 years in jail in a case related to illegal selling of state gifts, his party said on Wednesday.
The verdict also includes a 10-year disqualification from holding public office, his party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said. Bushra Khan, commonly known as Bushra Bibi, was arrested shortly after the verdict, PTI said.
The sentencing by an anti-graft court in Islamabad comes a day after Khan was handed a 10-year jail term in another case in which he was convicted of revealing state secrets, and a week before national elections.
"Another sad day in our judicial system history, which is being dismantled," Khan's media team said, denying the charges.
"No cross questioning allowed, no final argument concluded and decision pops up like a pre-determined process in play," it said, adding "This ridiculous decision will also be challenged."
Khan was also handed a three-year prison sentence in August by another court for selling gifts worth more than 140 million rupees ($501,000) in state possession and received during his 2018-2022 premiership.
Wednesday's verdict was linked to the same matter, but followed an investigation by the country's top anti-graft body, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which had also charged his wife in the case.
A prosecution team member, speaking to Reuters on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the verdict. Local broadcaster Geo News reported that the verdict also came with a hefty fine.
Khan's earlier three-year sentence was later suspended but Khan remains behind bars in connection with other cases. He has said that he legally purchased the state gifts.
Government officials have alleged Khan's aides sold the gifts in Dubai.
Khan's earlier conviction resulted in a five-year ban from holding public office, ruling the 71-year-old out of the upcoming Feb 8 election. Wednesday's verdict, however, means that he will be ineligible to hold office till he is 81.
While Khan has been found guilty in two separate cases, this is the first sentencing for his wife Bushra. The two were married in 2018, months before Khan ascended to premiership for the first time. It was Khan's third marriage after two divorces.

JOHOR BAHRU: A joint operation by state authorities at the Iskandar Puteri night market yesterday revealed that foreign beggars preying on public sympathy can net up to RM10,000 a month under the pretext of collecting donations to finance tahfiz schools and religious institutions,
The issue came to light following the arrest of three Cambodian men and two Thai men by the Immigration Department, the Johor Bahru District Social Welfare Department, and the Johor State Islamic Religious Department yesterday evening.
Johor immigration director Baharuddin Tahir said in addition to the five foreigners, an Indonesian man and a woman who operated stalls at the night market were also arrested in the 6.30 pm operation.
"Some of them are disabled. These people can earn up to RM300 a day or RM10,000 a month," he said in a statement today, adding that they were between 34 and 63 years old.
Baharuddin said all of them are believed to have contravened Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) for not possessing valid passports or permits to be in Malaysia and Rule 39 (b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for violating visa conditions.
In another operation, public tip-offs led to the detention of 40 foreigners suspected of working without valid permits and overstaying in Malaysia were picked up in an operation around the state on Jan 29 and yesterday, said Baharuddin.
"A total of 353 individuals were checked, out of which 40 were arrested. There were nine Nepalese men, five Bangladeshi men, Indonesians (one man and two women), and Myanmar nationals (15 men and four women).
"Also arrested were two men and a woman from India, and a man from Cambodia. All of them are between 21 and 49 years old," he said.
Baharuddin said they are being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) and the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) for not possessing valid passports or permits to be in the country.
They were also found to have contravened Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Act 155) for overstaying and Rule 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for violating visa conditions, he added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's Sultan Ibrahim from the southern state of Johor was installed as the country's 17th king on Wednesday, taking the oath of office in a ceremony at the national palace in Kuala Lumpur.
The monarchy plays a mostly ceremonial role in Malaysia, but its influence has grown in recent years, prompting the king to wield rarely-used discretionary powers to quell political instability.
Under a unique system of monarchy, the heads of Malaysia's nine royal families take turns to be the King, known as the "Yang di-Pertuan Agong" every five years.
Sultan Ibrahim, 65, succeeds Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, who is returning to lead his home state of Pahang after completing his five-year tenure as king.
While the monarchy is largely seen as above politics, Sultan Ibrahim has been noted for his forthrightness and outsized personality, often weighing in on the country's political issues.
Known for his large collection of luxury cars and motorbikes, Sultan Ibrahim has wide-ranging business interests from real estate to mining, including a stake in Forest City - a $100-billion China-backed land reclamation and development project off Johor.
Ahead of his installation, Sultan Ibrahim told Singapore's The Straits Times newspaper he intends to be an active monarch and proposed that Malaysia's state oil firm Petroliam Nasional and the country's anti-corruption agency to report directly to the king.
He also spoke of his plans to revive a stalled high-speed rail link project between Malaysia and Singapore, with a border crossing through Forest City.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim later downplayed the statements, saying all opinions can be discussed without disregarding the federal constitution, state media reported.
Sultan Ibrahim takes on his duties as king amid renewed political tensions in Malaysia.
The country has seen ongoing political turmoil since 2018 when the then-ruling Barisan Nasional coalition was ousted from power for the first time since independence, prompting the monarch to play a greater role.
The king largely acts upon the advice of the prime minister and the cabinet but is granted a few discretionary powers under the federal constitution, including the authority to appoint a premier he believes commands a parliamentary majority.
Sultan Ibrahim's predecessor, Al-Sultan Abdullah, exercised such power three times to resolve political uncertainty during his reign, twice after governments collapsed and the latest in 2022, when he appointed Anwar following an election that ended in a hung parliament.
Before stepping down from the throne, Al-Sultan Abdullah called for political stability, responding to media reports this month of an alleged plot to topple the government. Several opposition and ruling bloc leaders have denied being part of the plot.

- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA: The bidding for the 'GOLD' registration series for motor vehicles will be launched on Feb 1 at noon in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee anniversary of the Federal Territories Day.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the bidding could be made online through the JPJeBid system until 10 pm on Feb 5 and the results would be announced on Feb 6.
"The minimum bid for prime value numbers will be RM20,000, interesting numbers RM3,000, popular numbers RM800 while RM300 for regular numbers," he told a press conference today.
He said the Ministry of Transport (MOT) will receive 50 per cent of the earnings.
"MOT will use this fund to implement various initiatives for the people and stakeholders under it, including driving licence assistance, helmet assistance and FLYsiswa subsidies.
"In addition, we will also introduce the Social Security Organisation (Socso) contribution for all taxi drivers across the country," he said.
Loke said the highest revenue generated from special number plates so far was from the 'FF' series, raking in RM35 million.
He added that various initiatives introduced by the MOT as the result of the bid collection have helped the people a lot, including subsidising flight tickets from Peninsular Malaysia to Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
"This initiative was implemented during the Christmas celebration last year which benefitted a total of 6,369 passengers. The total subsidy borne by the government for this initiative was RM2.7 million with an average subsidy per ticket of RM429. This initiative will continue for (this year's) Chinese New Year and Hari Raya.
"In addition, the KTM commuter free fare initiative in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration has benefited 300,325 passengers," he said.

Another Video 'Asking RM100' This Time From An Australian YouTuber Goes Viral
THE POLICE ASKED FOR RM100=TRAVEL WITH LUKE DAMANT
Recently there was an issue of a traffic policeman asking for RM100 from a UK YouTuber couple - Tread The Globe, after driving over the speed limit.
The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) stated that they are investigating the incident without any tolerance for graft
However, the UK couple's video is not the only one who has gone viral, now another video clip has gone viral of an Australian couple being given the option to pay fines at a 'discounted price'.
Through the YouTube vlog Travel with Luke Damant , at minute 36:41 of the video uploaded in early November 2023 Luke claims he was stopped by a policeman for riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. Luke is a celebrity YouTuber with over 1.31 million subscribers.
Then the policeman said that the Australian must pay a fine of RM300 at the nearest police station immediately.
"You have to pay the fine immediately because you are a tourist. If you are a local, you have one month to settle the fine," said the police officer to Luke.
Then, the enforcement member gave Luke a choice whether to follow him to the police station 10 kilometers away to complete the summons or get a 'discount' there.
Luke chose to pay the 'discount'. He stated whether RM100 was enough because he was worried that he would be arrested again by other policemen.
However, the member asked him to get a helmet because the distance to the police station was quite far. He also said that it was quite dangerous for Luke's safety to ride a motorcycle without a helmet.
They then made a 'transaction' in a back alley near Luke's location and the pair were stopped.
After that he immediately went to a nearby shop and got a half-face helmet that cost RM50 — at least he could avoid being arrested again.
He explained again, he did not think that the police in Malaysia were quite as strict as in Bali when riding a motorcycle without a helmet.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia on Monday charged a former finance minister for failing to comply with a notice to declare assets under the country's anti-corruption laws, amid a crackdown on graft involving prominent political and business figures.
Daim Zainuddin, 85, a key ally of former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, pleaded not guilty. If convicted, Daim faces a maximum jail term of five years and can be fined up to 100,000 ringgit ($21,159.54).
Daim, who served as finance minister from 1984 to 1991 and from 1999 to 2001, entered court on Monday in a wheelchair and his lawyer cited health issues when asking for bail.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who campaigned on a reformist platform, has vowed to tackle high-level corruption but has faced accusations of using the country's anti-graft agency to target political rivals. Anwar has said he does not interfere in the agency's investigations.
Daim was charged following an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into the former minister based on information contained in the Pandora Papers - a massive leak of financial records in 2021 that revealed offshore assets held by politicians and public figures worldwide.
The MACC last month seized Ilham Tower, a 60-storey building in Malaysia's capital Kuala Lumpur, as part of its probe into Daim.
Daim's wife, Na'imah Abdul Khalid, was also charged in court last week for failing to disclose assets to the anti-corruption commission. She pleaded not guilty.
Daim has described the probe against him as a "political witch-hunt" led by the anti-graft agency and Anwar, who succeeded him as finance minister in 1991.
The MACC said last month it had acted independently according to the law when opening investigations against Daim in February 2023.
Anwar and Mahathir have been locked in a decades-long off-on rivalry that saw Anwar, a one-time protege of the elder statesman, jailed for sodomy and corruption, charges he said were politically motivated.
Anwar was pardoned and became prime minister in 2022, after more than two decades as an opposition leader, vowing to combat corruption and focus on the economy.
Tun Daim Zainuddin arrives in court to be charged.
Tun Daim Zainuddin arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Court Complex this morning and is expected to face charges of failing to comply with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) notice by not declaring assets.
The vehicle carrying the former Minister of Finance arrived at the court complex at around 8.40 this morning accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Na'imah Khalid.
Daim or his real name is Che Abdul Daim Zainuddin who is 86 years old arrived at the court in a wheelchair.
