When Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the RM2.6 billion donation controversy has been “comprehensively put to rest”, the Internet promptly responded with memes ridiculing the attorney-general’s (A-G) decision to close the case.

From comedians to artists, local blogs to international news wires, many found it hard to believe that it was okay for a leader of a democratic country to accept billions of ringgit from an unidentified foreign funder.

Najib urged Malaysians to “move on” from the issue but questions still abound despite the A-G’s findings that there was insufficient evidence to implicate Najib.

The Malaysian Insider revisits what is known so far about the billions in his account, since July 2 last year when The Wall Street Journal first broke the news that RM2.6 billion was channelled into Najib’s private bank accounts.

Money trail A: US$681 million between March 21 and 25, 2013

WSJ said it had obtained information from Malaysian investigators. It showed a flow chart with British Virgin Islands company called Tanore Finance transferring US$681 million into Najib’s accounts in two tranches, through Falcon Private Bank in Singapore.

According to WSJ, Falcon Private Bank is a Swiss bank owned by the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC), which in May last year injected US$1 billion into 1MDB to settle a syndicated loan from a consortium of banks.

In 2012, IPIC also issued guarantees for Najib’s brainchild, state-owned investment firm 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) for the payment of interest and principal on bonds issued by the state investment firm.

Money trail B: RM42 million between December 2014, February 2015

A second chart showed that former 1MDB subsidiary, SRC International, transferred RM50 million to its subsidiary, Gandingan Mentari. SRC International is now wholly owned by the Finance Ministry, which Najib also heads.

Gandingan Mentari then transferred the RM50 million to Ihsan Perdana, which undertakes corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes for 1MDB’s charitable foundations.

From Ihsan Perdana, RM42 million was transferred into Najib’s accounts at AmBank in three deposits of RM27 million, RM5 million and RM10 million.

A-G’s take on the US$681 million

A-G Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali said on Tuesday the US$681 million deposited into the prime minister’s accounts between March 22, 2013 and April 10, 2013, came from the Saudi royal family.

He did not confirm whether the money came from Tanore Finance through Falcon Private Bank in Singapore.

The A-G also said the prime minister returned US$620 million (RM2.03 billion) to the Saudi royal family in August 2013 because the money was not utilised.

Another trail from SRC International?

But Apandi also inadvertently revealed a third money trail, starting again, from SRC International, and which flowed through three companies and finally to three private AmBank accounts.

The companies were Putra Perdana Development Sdn Bhd and its subsidiaries, Putra Perdana Construction Sdn Bhd and Permai Binaraya Sdn Bhd.

From the initial RM35 million that SRC International transferred through these three companies, RM27 million finally ended up in one of the private AmBank accounts, with account number ending “880”. From here, RM20 million was transferred to the two other private accounts.

The “880” private account also received RM10 million and RM27 million in December 2014 and February 2015, respectively, via Gandingan Mentari and Ihsan Perdana.

Apandi, however, said Najib did not have any knowledge that SRC International had transferred money into his personal accounts nor did he instruct any such transaction.

Najib’s response

After the news of the fund transfer broke in July last year, Najib said he had not taken any money for personal gain, and accused his arch critic, former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of colluding with the foreign media to attack him.

It was a line he repeated many times although his critics noted he did not deny that the money was deposited into his accounts.

Speculation over whether or not Najib received the funds was finally put to rest when the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed the money came from Middle Eastern donors.

Since MACC’s confirmation, Najib spoke little of the issue, only reiterating that he was innocent of wrongdoing and the money was a “donation” rather than from 1MDB.

Even his highly anticipated explanation to the Dewan Rakyat fizzled out, as Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi spoke on his behalf instead.

Reasons for donation

On August 11, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the donation was from a “brotherly nation” which wanted to see certain parties win the 13th general election because they were friendly to them.

Four days later, Umno Kuantan division chief Datuk Seri Wan Adnan Wan Mamat said the RM2.6 billion was from Saudi Arabia as a form of appreciation of Malaysia “championing Islam” and fighting militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis).

But on August 22, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi said the donation came from their “Muslim friends in the Middle East” to help Umno fight DAP in the 14th general election, as the party was funded by Jews.

Later that same day, Zahid said he met the donors’ representatives who informed him that the funds was in appreciation for the government’s efforts in countering terrorism, and to help Barisan Nasional (BN) maintain Malaysia’s status as a Sunni country.

After the A-G’s no-further-action decision on Najib, however, the BBC on Wednesday reported an unnamed Saudi source as saying that the money was donated to help the prime minister win GE13 and counter potential Muslim Brotherhood influence in Malaysia.

The Saudis consider the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation, and Malaysia’s opposition alliance at that time included PAS, “whose founders were inspired by the Brotherhood”.

Case closed

After months of investigations, speculation and criticism, Apandi said on Tuesday there was “insufficient evidence” to implicate the prime minister and he would not pursue charges in court over the RM2.6 billion and SRC International.

But questions remain unanswered, such as what happened to the shortfall that Najib did not return to the Saudi donors. And even if Najib said he had no knowledge of the money transfers from SRC International to his accounts, who would transfer such large sums of cash to him, and why?

Given the call by the MACC’s oversight panels to anti-graft investigators to “engage” the A-G on the no-further action, and with sources saying charges were originally recommended against Najib, it could be that the case of the RM2.6 billion is not over yet. – January 31, 2016.

MACC chief Abu Kassim vows to defend his men

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Abu Kassim Mohamed (pic) has vowed that he would resign rather than take action against his officers who are carrying out their lawful duties.
He said based on his 30 years experience, "I know that MACC officers have always carried out their duties in a professional manner.”
"I would like to stress that I am willing to resign, rather than take actions against my officers who have all this while been defending the MACC's independence, upholding justice, as well as carrying out their duties according to the law," said Abu Kassim.
His comments appreared to come from an internal memo that was reportedly leaked on Facebook.
MACC’s strategic director Rohaizad Yaakob confirmed to a news portal that the statement was authentic but only meant for internal circulation.
Rohaizad said the person who leaked the momo should ask where his or her integrity lies.
On Jan 27, MACC said it was referring the Attorney-General's (A-G) decision to close the SRC International and RM2.6bil donation cases to two of its independent panels as per standard operating procedures.
Abu Kasim said that such referrals was part of the process of closing a case and not a challenge to the A-G's powers.
He also warned his officers not to release unofficial statements relating to the A-G's decision.

Maoist cult leader jailed 23 years for raping followers

LONDON (Reuters): A Maoist cult leader, convicted of raping and beating his brainwashed female followers and keeping his own daughter a fearful prisoner for more than three decades, was jailed for 23 years on Friday.
Aravindan Balakrishnan, 75, known as Comrade Bala, used sexual degradation and physical and mental violence to keep the women under his control.
One of the women was Malaysian Aishah Wahab, 69, who apparently fell under Comrade Bala’s spell and rapidly lost touch with her family.
Aishah had come to London as long ago as 1967 after winning a scholarship to study in London. Prosecutors said Comrade Bala turned his south London Communist commune into his own personal cult with members who believed him to be a god, Reuters reported.
His own daughter, Katy Morgan-Davies, who was born to one of the women in the collective, was also bullied and beaten, barely allowed to leave her home and never permitted to go to school, play with friends or even see a doctor.
"He loved violence, and those totalitarian dictatorships. He wanted to be like that, he wanted to be like Stalin, or Mao or Pol Pot," she told Sky News.
Balakrishnan, a small, grey-haired, bespectacled figure, denied all charges but was convicted at London's Southwark Crown Court in December of offences spanning almost 34 years including child cruelty, false imprisonment, rape and indecent assault.
He began as the charismatic head of a Communist group in south London in the 1970s called the Workers' Institute following the teachings of Chairman Mao Zedong, the founder of modern China.
However, over time, the group's numbers waned, the men were forced to leave and the dwindling group of women were so dominated and brainwashed they believed he was all-powerful.
He threatened them with what he called a supernatural mind-control machine which he named "Jackie" - an acronym of Jehovah, Allah, Christ, Krishna and Immortal Easwaran.
Among the group was his daughter. She was not told who her parents were, only learning who her mother was after her death when she was a teenager.
"If I did something wrong, others and me, we would be killed by Jackie," she told Sky News.
"If he intervened by slapping us and beating us... then Jackie would think that enough has been done and not kill us. So we should be thankful that he is hurting us... because we would be saved from Jackie."
Her fate and that of the other followers only came to light when she escaped his clutches in 2013 when she was 30, very ill with diabetes, and suffering with chronic post traumatic stress disorder.
It was reported that in December 2013 that Aishah's sister, Kamar Mahtum, saw her for the first time at a secret meeting arranged by police and charity workers.
Kamar, who had flown to London from Malaysia for the highly charged reunion, had not seen Aishah since 1967. They kept in touch at first but within a few years all letters home had dried up. The revolutionary commune had led Aishah to cut all ties.
Kamar has been able to give the world only the merest glimpse of life behind closed doors, most latterly at 1C Peckford Place in Brixton, the commune’s most recent address.
Kamar told The Telegraph that her sister appeared in good spirits and they spoke in English rather than Malay and Aishah did not discuss the conditions in which she and the other rescued women had been living, nor their alleged captors.
“When I asked her about what had gone on she just clammed up,” said Kamar, “The only thing she wanted me to perceive is that she is happy. She told me: 'I have got friends here, I work here. I do important work here’, but she could not reveal what she did.
"Each time she said something that made me smile she would say: 'Oh, I love your smile. Don’t frown, laugh, smile.”
Kamar said her instinct had been to reach out and help her little sister, but Aishah insisted she had never been lonely in London and had people who looked out for her.
“Aishah said, 'I’ve got enough’, 'my friends feed me’, 'my friends love me, I love them, they help me out’.”
Kamar added: “When she said that I felt that she was trying to tell me … that even without us, she can survive, as she has been for the last 40 years. We’re nothing that important. I felt a lot of disappointment.”

Sirul: Najib had no part in Altantuya's murder

PETALING JAYA: Sirul Azhar Umar has sworn in God's name that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was "no way involved" in the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2006.
In a 55-second video, the former police commando was seen sitting down rigidly with his hands clasped together.

In the video, he said that he was taught never to defame anyone.
"I understand the motivation of certain parties with interests to sabotage someone," said Sirul.
"I was never brought up or taught to make false accusations. It is a big sin if I falsely accuse somebody.
"I promise by God, that Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is in no way involved in this case," he said.
The video is the third video of Sirul talking about the Altantuya murder case.
In his first video, he said that parties with vested interests were attempting to sabotage somebody, but did not mention any names.
The second video showed Sirul revealing that "the woman", a reference to Altantuya, was not pregnant.
On Jan 13 last year, the Federal Court sentenced Sirul and former Special Action Unit personnel Azilah Hadri to death for the murder of Altantuya.
However, Sirul was not present on the day the Court passed judgement as he had escaped to Australia.
He was detained on Jan 20 last year by Australian immigration after Interpol issued a red notice, and held at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre in Sydney.

BESTFBKL- Taught never to defame another but comitting murder is not a problem how can this joker have any credibility. There's has been never any new evidence linking the PM anyway so why make a comment now other than to get publicity.

Pertemuan semula rakan zaman sekolah melalui media sosial kadangkala boleh membuatkan rumahtangga porak peranda- Salih Yakob

"Rumah Tangga Saya Runtuh Kerana Reunion Sekolah" — Salih Yakob

- Siakapkeli.my

A mystery illness left several crew and passengers feeling sick and faint on a London - Los Angeles American Airline flight AA109

Emergency services on the runway
Chaos: Emergency services met the plane as it landed
American Airlines flight AA109 was back in service just 24 hours after a mystery illness left several crew and passengers feeling sick and faint.
The aircraft was on route to Los Angeles from London Heathrow when two travellers and seven members of the cabin staff became ill.
Passengers were asked if there was a doctor on board before the captain made the call to turn the flight around above Iceland at around 2.50pm on Wednesday.
Paramedics and fire crews surrounded the plane as it landed five hours after taking off - but all those affected 'felt fine' and were discharged.
American Airlines changed the air conditioning filters, then took the plane for an hour long test flight on Thursday lunchtime.
Lee Gunn
Treatment: Paramedics rushed on board to treat the sick passengers and crew
They didn't find anything wrong and the plane went back into service that afternoon.
A spokesman said: "It's very difficult to pin point exactly what it was.
"As soon as they landed everybody felt fine
"We checked the air conditioning and as a precaution changed the air filters.
"We did a test flight on Thursday before we put it back in service.
"It flew for about an hour round the south of the UK to see if situation could be replicated."
He added the airline ran 7,000 flights a day, and while he could only recall one similar incident the past few years, the diversion was "rare but routine at the same time".
One theory is the sickness could have been caused by chemicals in cleaning products used on the plane.
The spokesman said the decision to return to London rather than land at Reykjavik was due to the fact the illness appeared to be serious, but not life-threatening, he added.
Better facilities and connections at Heathrow meant the passengers could be transported to their final destinations more easily, and the plane could be checked more quickly.
Lee Gunn
Medical: This picture was taken as paramedics met the plane
Lee Gunn, a British passenger on the flight, told the Mirror Online: "About 2.5 hours into the flight just as we were passing Iceland we had a Tannoy announcement asking for any doctors, nurses or medical professionals on board to report to the boarding doors to assist with unwell passengers.
"The lights then came on in the cabin and there was lots of commotion.
"I'm a bit of a plane geek myself so thought 'here we go, Reykjavik here we come' but it was announced about 20 minutes after we were going to divert back to LHR.
"It was also reported that 7 of the crew - 13 on board in total I believe - had fallen ill, along with 'many' passengers."
The flight was met by Paramedics as it touched down at Heathrow just moments ago - five hours after it first took off.
It is thought the passengers luggage may have been retained for checks by the carrier.
A statement from American Airlines said: "American Airlines Flight AA 109, a Boeing 777-300, operating to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) from London Heathrow, is returning to Heathrow due to a medical emergency.
"The aircraft departed London Heathrow at 1205 local time and is expected to land at Heathrow at 1700 local time.
"We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience to their travel plans."

Emergency: The American Airlines jet was forced to turn around
A second American Airlines plane was forced to make an emergency landing just a day later when passengers and crew passed out mid-flight.
The flight, which was flying from Brazil to the United States, was travelling at a height of more than 30,000ft when three members of staff became ill.
According to reports, Flight 904 which left Rio de Janeiro for Miami around 11pm yesterday, but was forced to change direction and land in Brasilia, Brazil.
A statement from the airline said: "One passenger and three flight attendants complained of lightheadedness.
"The aircraft landed safely at BSB at 12:37 a.m. and was met by paramedics who evaluated the passenger and crew members.
"None requested further medical attention.
"Our maintenance team is currently inspecting the aircraft and performing a thorough maintenance check.
"Out of an abundance of caution, the flight was cancelled last night and our passengers have been re-accommodated on other flights."
