PETALING JAYA: The country’s largest representative body for the travel industry has warned that the strict enforcement of operating hours for entertainment outlets in Kuala Lumpur could have serious repercussions on tourism and businesses in the city.

The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) said last year, Kuala Lumpur attracted 12.29 million international tourists, ahead of cities such as Rome, Tokyo, Istanbul, Seoul, Miami, Barcelona and Shanghai.

Nonetheless, Matta president Tan Kok Liang told FMT, the night scene for tourists in Kuala Lumpur left “much to be desired”.

He cautioned that curtailing the operating hours of entertainment outlets would dampen visitors’ experience. This, in turn, could lead to tourists deciding not to return to the city, which would affect tourism receipts as well as the economy.

Tan was responding to recent remarks by Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad, who said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would review the operating hours of several outlets that had been given special permission to open until 5am to cater to tourists. Khalid said the outlets had reportedly abused that privilege by allowing locals in as well.

Khalid also said entertainment outlets in the city would have to abide by the closing hours stated in their licence agreements beginning Jan 1, or face action. Many of these outlets are supposed to close at 1am.

The Amanah leader said this should be seen as a reminder to those in Kuala Lumpur to spend more time and money with their families rather than at entertainment outlets.

But Tan warned that the move could result in the city being seen as less tourist-friendly, which would affect visitor arrivals.

“The total number for the whole country dropped for the first nine months of this year,” he said, adding that the situation could be further affected by the introduction of the airport departure levy beginning Jan 1.

He said entertainment outlets were mostly frequented by high-spending tourists, including those who come to Kuala Lumpur for business meetings, incentive tours and conferences.

The tourism industry itself provides employment to many, he added.

“Closing entertainment outlets at 1am sharp may create a ripple effect on our tourism industry and affect our country’s economy,” he said.

DAP’s Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun also voiced concern over the possible repercussions of such a move, especially in his constituency where he said entertainment outlets were crucial to the local economy.

He said the move could also adversely affect other businesses which cater to tourists.

“I hope the government will not have a one-size-fits-all ruling. I can understand the rationale of limiting the operating hours of outlets close to residential areas,” he said.

But entertainment outlets in isolated areas or tourism hot spots should be allowed to stay open longer, he added.

Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs chief executive Ali Salman said existing rules and regulations on operating hours for entertainment outlets should be respected and enforced.

He added that forms of entertainment which cause harm to others, such as being a nuisance to neighbourhoods, should be checked and controlled.

But in principle, he said, people should be allowed to decide whether to spend time at home or at entertainment outlets, with or without their families.

“It is not the job of the government to do moral policing or force specific behaviour.”

Indonesian firm claims it was cheated of RM138mil by 'Datuk Seri' for petroleum project

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 (Bernama): An Indonesian company claims it was cheated by a Malaysian businessman with a "Datuk Seri" title of US$33 million (RM138 million) over an oil and gas project in Aceh, Indonesia.

The "Datuk Seri" allegedly falsified several agreements and statutory declarations for his own interest in a business agreement with the company, PT Anglo Slavic Utama (PT ASU).

PT ASU claimed this in a statement here today (Nov 29) through its representative Ronie Tangkong, who is also one of the company's directors.

"A police report was also lodged on Nov 2, 2018 by PT ASU against the 'Datuk Seri' at the Selangor Police Contingent Headquarters," the company said.

On Nov 3, 2012, an agreement was signed between Global Capital Limited (GCL) and the "Datuk Seri" for a project to develop and produce oil and gas in Kuala Simpang Timur, Aceh Indonesia.

GCL was appointed and authorised by PT ASU to sell and manage its (PT ASU) assets. It was at the invitation of the Datuk Seri that the agreement was signed.

The agreement involved an amount US$55 million (RM230 million), which allowed the company owned by the Datuk Seri to acquire PT ASU assets.

A total of US$ 22million (RM92 million) was paid to PT ASU.

"PT ASU was used as a bait by the Datuk Seri to woo investors and to get what he had wanted, after which he ignored PT ASU," said the statement.
According to the previous agreement, the Datuk Seri had asked GCL to seek investors to take over the shares of a public company where he (Datuk Seri) was working and empowering himself.

"A PT ASU asset purchase agreement was signed at a hotel in Petaling Jaya on Dec 28, 2012 between the Datuk Seri and a PT ASU representative who was one of its Indonesian directors.

"The parties had agreed to the terms since it was going to bring benefits through the oil and gas projects.

"However, the agreement was later cancelled by the Datuk Seri's company and (this) caused our company to lose US$ 33 million.

"The Datuk Seri had malicious intentions in teaming up with the director who had represented the company in the earlier agreement by changing the terms of the original agreement signed on Nov 3, 2012.

"Both also made a false statutory declaration and the declaration was the reason for the cancellation of the agreement made on Dec 28, 2012," added the statement.

Meanwhile, a Selangor police spokesman when contacted by Bernama. confirmed receiving the report and added that the matter was under police investigation. - Bernama

Major shareholder Global Capital of Indonesia sues Protasco managing director, claims RM368m
26 OCT 2018 / 10:09 H.
THESUN DAILY

PETALING JAYA: The feud at Protasco Bhd has taken a new twist as substantial shareholder Global Capital Ltd (GCL) has initiated a civil suit against the group's executive vice-chairman and managing director Datuk Seri Chong Ket Pen for alleged abuse of power.

The suit revolves round the entry of GCL into Protasco in 2012 after the company promised a planned oil and gas foray and a profit guarantee for the next four years. In 2012, Protasco announced that it was buying a 63% stake in PT Anglo Slavic Indonesia (PT ASI) for US$22 million (RM92 million). The deal, however, did not materialise due to non-fulfilment of conditions.

In a statement of claim filed at the High Court in Kuala Lumpur last Friday sighted by SunBiz, the Indonesia-based company is claiming RM368 million from Chong, including loss of investment and future profits for the stake in Protasco; loss of margin to finance the acquisition of shares up to RM75 million; liability of US$55 million (RM228.5 million) to PT Anglo Slavic Utama (PT ASU), as guarantor for Chong pursuant to the investment guarantee agreement; as well as RM65 million as payment for the profit guarantee under the investment guarantee agreement.

To recap, GCL acquired a 27.11% stake in Protasco in November 2012 through its representatives for RM96.52 million or a 33% premium over the market price. The "pricey" deal was done on the assurance of Protasco's planned venture into the oil and gas sector.

Tey Por Yee, who emerged as the largest shareholder of Protasco, was appointed to the board together with three other GCL representatives – Ooi Kok Aun, Tan Yee Boon, Mohamad Farid Mohd Yusof.
"The acquisition of the shares at a huge premium was a risk for the plaintiff, given the performance and financial situation of Protasco. Nevertheless that risk was undertaken, given that the plaintiff was under the impression that their investment was protected by the assurance given by the defendant, inter alia his guarantees and obligations under the investment guarantee agreement," the suit said.
GCL alleged that Chong failed to ensure that Protasco was profitable, with a profit before tax of RM30 million and RM35 million in the third and fourth year under the investment guarantee agreement. A total of RM110 million profit was guaranteed over the four years.

Protasco's earnings have been falling since 2015. For the six months to June 30, 2018, it swung into the red with a net loss of RM3.1 million against a net profit of RM11.2 million in the same period last year, dragged by lower contribution in the property development, education and construction segments.

Tey and Ooi first came under the limelight in 2014 on allegations of criminal breach of trust due to the non-disclosure of interest in a transaction involving RM85 million. However, they were granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal by the sessions court in September 2017. They were in the news again when Protasco demanded the Attorney-General's Chambers reopen cases against the two.
Tey ceased to be a substantial shareholder of Protasco in March 2016.

In the suit, GCL alleged that Chong entered into business transactions and decisions on operation, remuneration, payments of dividends and salaries for his own benefit at the expense and the best interests of the company.

According to Protasco's latest annual report, Chong raked in RM2.41 million remuneration in 2017. He has been a Protasco director since May 2001 and was appointed as executive vice-chairman and managing director in February 2013. He has a 16.91% direct and a 10.31% indirect stake in the company.

Documents classified as "official secrets" will be reclassified for CBT Trials

Sri Ram: 'Secret' documents in Najib CBT trial need to be reclassified

Thursday, 29 Nov 20187:32 PM MYT
by maizatul nazlina

KUALA LUMPUR: Documents classified as "official secrets" will be reclassified in the RM6.636bil criminal breach of trust (CBT) trial of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.

Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram, who was appointed by the Attorney General’s Chambers to lead the prosecution, informed Sessions Court judge Azman Ahmad that there were several documents classified under the Official Secrets Act (OSA) which had to be reclassified for the trial to go on.

"All documents are there, but it takes time to reclassify," he said during case management on Thursday (Nov 29).

Earlier, Sri Ram also told Judge Azman that they were in the process of serving 224 documents, which represented between 70% and 80% of the documents, that they intended to tender in the trial.

He said in the meantime, there was an application to transfer the case to the High Court and that it has been fixed before a High Court deputy registrar for Friday (Nov 30) morning.

"We will be seeking for an early date of transfer," he said, adding that he applied for Dec 7 as the next case management date.

Judge Azman later set Dec 7 as the next case management.

Counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah acted for Najib while counsel Datuk K. Kumaraendran and Datuk Geethan Ram Vincent appeared for Dr Mohd Irwan.

On Oct 25, Najib and Dr Mohd Irwan, who were jointly charged with six counts of CBT over government funds totalling RM6.636bil, had claimed trial to the charges.

The first two charges read that Najib and Dr Mohd Irwan were entrusted with dominion over RM1.2bil and RM655mil respectively, and committed CBT over them.

The third charge alleged that the two men committed CBT over RM220mil which was allocated for administration expenses for the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The money had been in the government’s Federal Consolidated Fund.

The RM1.3bil in the fourth charge was in the same fund and classified as an allocation for subsidy and cash aid.

The fifth and sixth charges were for allegedly committing CBT over 1.95 billion yuan (RM1.261bil) and RM2bil.

All the offences were allegedly committed at the Finance Ministry office in Putrajaya between Dec 21, 2016, and Dec 18, 2017.

Meanwhile, former spy chief Datuk Hasanah Ab Hamid's case was mentioned before Sessions Court judge Rozina Ayob.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhamad Iskandar Ahmad informed the court that 46 documents have been tendered.

DPP Muhamad Iskandar said among documents were a list of seized items, invoices, photographs of the exhibits and an appointment letter as Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (Meio) director-general.

Hasanah's counsel Datuk Shaharudin Ali then informed the court that his client's bank account has been frozen and that it had nothing to do with any suspicious money.

Shaharudin later applied for direct access to the account.

Judge Rozina said the prosecutor should refer to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the investigating officer on this matter.

Hasanah, 61, claimed trial to committing CBT involving US$12.1mil (RM50.3mil) of government funds at the Prime Minister’s Department in Putrajaya between April 30 and May 9 this year.

Judge Rozina later fixed Jan 3 for mention.

Terengganu's appoints first ever assemblywoman

Zuraida Md Noor appointed as Terengganu's first ever assemblywoman

Kuala Terengganu PAS Dewan Muslimat secretary Zuraida Md Noor being sworn in as the first assemblywoman in the Terengganu state assembly - Bernama

KUALA TERENGGANU (Bernama): Kuala Terengganu PAS Dewan Muslimat secretary Zuraida Md Noor created history when she was appointed as the first assemblywoman in the state on Thursday (Nov 29).

Zuraida, who is also Terengganu Ameerah director, was appointed as the state's first assemblywoman during the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly sitting, in line with Article 27 (2) of the Terengganu Constitution.

It is stipulated in the state constitution that if there are no elected women or non-Muslim representatives, the assembly could appoint up to four people (to safeguard the interests of the groups).

This provision allowed Zuraida to be appointed as assemblywoman without going through the electoral process and without holding any state constituency.

Earlier, Paka assemblyman Satiful Bahri Mamat proposed Zuraida's appointment, and it was unanimously accepted by all assemblymen before she was sworn in before Speaker Yahaya Ali at the end of the sitting.

Zuraida, 38, described her appointment as an honour as a sole woman representative to champion all aspects of women-related issues such as welfare, health, economics and family.

Mother of three children Zuraida received an early education at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Panjang, Kuala Terengganu, then obtained a Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering from the Terengganu Advanced Technical Institute (TATI) and before earning her bachelor's degree in Islamic Studies from Open University Malaysia.

Mentri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said with the appointment it was hoped Zuraida to represent the voice of women in Terengganu as the state never had an assemblywoman before, compared to other states. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 29 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said he is unable to comment on rumours that Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V recently married.

The prime minister said he has not received any official confirmation of the event which has made headlines worldwide.

“I don’t have the name or official confirmation, I can’t say anything,” Dr Mahathir told reporters in Parliament.

Istana Negara has not issued any statement on the matter.

Rumours that the 49-year-old monarch from Kelantan had married a 25-year-old former Russian beauty queen started circulating within local gossip rags earlier this week, featuring pictures of the couple in their wedding finery and have since been picked up by tabloids in the UK, like The Sun and Daily Mail.

According to the rumours, the Russian woman’s name is either Oksana Gorbatenko or Oksana Voevodina, but she has allegedly since taken on the Muslim name Rihanna after embracing Islam earlier this year.

The alleged wedding reportedly took place on November 22 in a concert hall in Moscow.

The latest rumour, as reported by Daily Mail yesterday, is that the couple recently visited a German fertility clinic after the alleged wedding.

Penerangan Menteri Dalam Negeri, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, di Dewan Rakyat

BERITA HARIAN

Penerangan Menteri Dalam Negeri mengenai insiden di Kuil Sri Maha Mariamman di Seafield, USJ, Selangor kepada Dewan Rakyat.

Tuan Yang Di-Pertua,

(i) 21 buah kereta dan 6 buah motosikal yang dibakar;

(ii) 1 bilah pisau dan 2 bilah parang; dan

(iii) 7 pasang kasut, dan 3 vest;

(i) Seksyen 435 Kanun Keseksaan iaitu khianat dengan api;

(ii) Seksyen 148 Kanun Keseksaan iaitu melakukan rusuhan bersenjata;

(iii) Seksyen 324 Kanun Keseksaan iaitu mendatangkan cedera dengan menggunakan senjata;

(iv) Seksyen 447 Kanun Keseksaan iaitu pencerobohan kawasan;

(v) Seksyen 6 (1) Akta Bahan-Bahan Kakisan dan Letupan dan Senjata Berbahaya 1958 iaitu memiliki senjata berbahaya;

Insiden jenayah, bukan perkauman

Tuan Yang Di-Pertua,

Terima kasih, Tuan Yang Di-Pertua.

Entertainment outlets in Kuala Lumpur will have to abide by the closing hours stated in their licence starting Jan 1 , Most To Close by 1 AM

KL entertainment outlets to close at 1am to enhance family time, says FT minister
Syauqi Jamil
-November 29, 2018 4:08 PM
Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad.

KUALA LUMPUR: Entertainment outlets in Kuala Lumpur will have to abide by the closing hours stated in their licence starting Jan 1 or face action, in a move to enhance family time.

Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would also review the operating hours of a few outlets that had been given special permission to open until 5am to cater to tourists but which had abused that privilege by allowing locals in.

This, he said, should be seen as a reminder to those in Kuala Lumpur to spend more time and money with their families rather than at entertainment outlets.

“We have a lot of entertainment outlets in Kuala Lumpur which are supposed to close by 1am according to their licence, but they disregard it. Many carry on until 5am in the morning,” he said at a press conference today.

“There are a very limited number of outlets that have been given special permission (to close after 1am) because most of their clients are foreigners. This is meant to cater to the tourists. But we find that most of the patrons are locals.

“We’ll review the outlets which have been given special permission to carry on until 3am or 5am, and see whether that special permission should still be given.”

He also warned outlet operators that the regulations would be strictly enforced.

Khalid was commenting on DBKL’s proposal on Monday to shorten the operating hours of entertainment outlets.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said the proposal was to limit operation hours for entertainment premises within the city centre until 1am.

Khalid said DBKL had received numerous complaints from the public about noise and other disturbances.

The High Court rejected a bid to block the relocation of the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25

High Court rejects bid to block Seafield temple relocation

Thursday, 29 Nov 201811:38 AM MYT
by mei mei chu

SHAH ALAM: The High Court here has rejected a bid to block the relocation of the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25 that was at the centre of riots earlier this week.

Three individuals acting as the administrators of the temple filed an application at the Shah Alam High Court here Thursday (Nov 29) to strike out the eviction order.

However, the High Court dismissed the injunction against a 2014 consent judgement ordering the temple to be relocated.

Lawyer S. Morgan, representing plaintiff Thangaraju Sundarajoo, told reporters that the court refused to allow the temple to stay.

He said, however, they will go in with a civil suit against One City Development Bhd, the Selangor state government and the opposing temple faction.

“The court, after reading through all the grounds, ruled that the plaintiffs don’t have grounds to get a stay at no cost,” he said.

Temple taskforce representative V.K. Regu said they might resubmit the application before a new judge.

Advisor Datuk Seri S. Subramaniam said the Selangor state government had previously awarded the land to the temple in 1987 and again in 2001.

On March 11, 2014, in a consent judgement recorded in the Shah Alam High Court, four parties – the temple committee, landowner One City, the Selangor state government, and the temple’s opposing committee led by M. Nagaraju – agreed to the relocation of the temple to USJ 23, some 2.7km away from its current location in USJ 25.

One City agreed to donate RM1.5mil in compensation for the construction of a new temple on one of two plots of land given by the company.

However, Nagaraju and his committee later changed their minds, citing various reasons, and asked that the temple be preserved as a heritage site.

Klang MP Charles Santiago previously said that the developer was open to discussions but became unwilling after it was taken over by Philippines-based Ayala Corporation early this year.

After the temple was attacked by a group of thugs early Monday (Nov 26) morning, a riot took place as people rushed to defend the temple. Several people were hurt and vehicles were burnt.

More than 20 people have been arrested in connection with the riots.

On Wednesday (Nov 28), Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin alleged that lawyers to the developer had hired the Malay thugs, which led to the riots.

One City Development has denied the allegation.

A Florida Man Spent his First Hang-Gliding Ride Dangling, After Pilot Forgets To Strap Him

Man hangs on after glider pilot forgets to strap him in

Thursday, 29 Nov 20189:48 AM MYT

NORTH PORT, Florida, United States (AP): A Florida man spent his first hang-gliding ride dangling precariously from a control bar and the pilot’s leg after the pilot forgot to strap him in.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that North Port resident Chris Gursky posted a GoPro video of the wild ride in Switzerland on his YouTube account Monday.

The video shows the trouble began immediately after takeoff when Gursky realized he wasn’t attached to the craft.

He ended up holding the control bar with his left hand and the pilot with his right hand for most of the two-minute-and-14-second flight. The pilot held Gursky’s harness with his left hand while steering with his right.

The glider was at times hundreds of feet (meters) from the ground as it traveled from the top of a mountain. Gursky fractured his right wrist upon landing. - AP

The Fire and Rescue Department Makes Police Report Denying Allegations that fireman hit by a fire engine during Seafield Temple Riot

Fire and Rescue Department lodges report against allegations that Adib hit by fire truck

Thursday, 29 Nov 20189:39 AM MYT

SUBANG JAYA (Bernama): The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has made a police report denying allegations that fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim was hit by a fire engine during the riots at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25 here.

The report was lodged by Selangor JBPM director Azmi Osman at the Subang Jaya police headquarters at 9.56pm on Wednesday (Nov 28).

According to Azmi, the allegation made by the Save Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple task force was not true as it was based on information by an individual who was not at the site of the incident. A video of it has gone viral on social media.

“I myself had met the firemen at the location and they gave the actual picture of what happened.

“We hope with this report, police will take action against the false statement. JBPM denies that the firefighter was injured after being hit by our vehicle which was reversing,” he told reporters.

Azmi said the department would leave it to the police to investigate further on the incident involving Muhammad Adib, 24.

The temple task force alleged the injury sustained by Muhammad Adib in the riots early Tuesday was due to an accident and not beaten.

Temple task force chairman S. Ramaji was reported as saying that he had evidence to prove that Muhammad Adib was rescued by people when he was trapped.

JBPM director-general Datuk Mohammad Hamdan Wahid refuted the allegations, saying the statement was baseless. - Bernama

Babysitter’s Husband Jailed 20 Years and 12 Strokes for inserting his finger into the private parts of baby Nur Muazara

Barber gets jail, rotan for inserting finger into baby’s private parts

Thursday, 29 Nov 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: A babysitter’s husband was jailed 20 years and ordered to be whipped 12 times for inserting his finger into the private parts of baby Nur Muazara Ulfa Muhammad Zainal.

Sessions Court judge Datin Surita Budin sentenced Hazmi Majid (pic) after he pleaded guilty yesterday.

The judge jailed the 36-year-old barber 20 years and instructed him to be whipped six times for inserting his finger into the 11-month-old baby’s private parts, and another 20 years’ jail and six strokes of the rotan for inserting his finger into her anus.

She ordered the sentences to run concurrently from the day Hazmi was arrested on Nov 13.

The offences were committed at a unit in Apartment Sri Cempaka, Section 16, Bandar Baru Bangi between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Nov 7.

Hazmi was charged under Section 377CA of the Penal Code which carries a maximum 30 years’ jail and whipping upon conviction.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Siti Noor Hafizan Zakaria pressed for a deterrent sentence, saying it involved an 11-month-old baby who was helpless and could not defend herself.

She said the accused, as the husband of the babysitter, should also take care of the baby, not exploit her.

In mitigation, Hazmi said he was the sole breadwinner and needed to support his wife and three children.

On Friday, Hazmi was charged with murdering Nur Muazara Ulfa under Section 302 of the Penal Code which carries the death sentence upon conviction.

No plea was recorded, and bail was not offered.

It was reported that Nur Muazara Ulfa died on Nov 9 after spending two days at Serdang Hospital in critical condition, believed to be due to physical and sexual abuse by the babysitter’s husband.

Fire Services DG insists none of his personnel were mowed down by a reversing fire engine while trying to escape a mob, Leaves it to Police Investigation

Temple riot - Fire dept DG produces fireman 'mowed' down by fire engine
28 Nov 2018, 8:40 pm (Updated 28 Nov 2018, 10:19 pm)

The Fire and Rescue Services Department director-general said today that none of his personnel were mowed down by a reversing fire engine while trying to escape a mob during the Seafield temple riot Tuesday morning.

According to Mohammad Hamdan Wahid, the person seen walking behind a fire engine in the viral clip was not badly injured firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kasim, but another, whom he identified as Mohd Hazim Mohd Rahimi.

Hazim was seated beside the director-general during the press conference at the National Heart Institute (IJN) today.

Hamdan said eight other fire and rescue personnel at the scene of the chaos outside the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya in the early hours of Tuesday could attest to the fact that Hazim was not knocked down.

“We leave it to the police to investigate. The eight firefighters at the scene know what actually happened. There are laws to handle those spreading fake news.

“It is not our (the department’s) style to mow down our colleagues,” he said.

Hamdan was responding to a claim by temple caretakers earlier today, citing an undisclosed video clip which they claimed showed being knocked down by a reversing fire engine causing him to land on a nearby car.

This was in contrast with the authorities’ version that the 24-year-old was pulled out of his van and assaulted by rioters at the scene while responding to an emergency call.

Temple committee chairperson S Ramaji had said a figure wearing a fire-resistant suit and seen walking behind the reversing vehicle in the clip, was Adib.

Hamdan said fire and rescue personnel responding to an emergency call were instead greeted by a mob.

“The driver of the fire engine said that when they arrived at the scene, they were greeted with machetes and steel pipes banging on the vehicle’s door.

“You can judge for yourselves if that is good hospitality. Hazim was seated beside the driver,” said Hamdan.

Good Samaritans

Commenting on another video clip which purportedly depicted a group extracting an injured Adib from the scene and loading him onto a pick-up truck bound for a hospital, Hamdan said:

“I believe they were good Samaritans in the group but I leave it to the police to see who rioted and who saved (lives).

“I don’t want to comment much on this. I just want to say that the remark (that Adib was not assaulted) is not true and baseless. The story has been spun and it's like trying to justify the unjustifiable (menegakkan benang yang basah)."

Recalling the events that night, Hazim said he was on the verge of attending to the hose reel of the fire engine upon arriving at the scene when they were set upon by the mob.

“We were attacked and fearing for my life, I ran into the EMRS (emergency medical rescue team) vehicle (behind the fire engine, in which Adib was seated).

“I was mistaken for Adib,” he said, alluding to the video clip which showed a figure behind the fire engine.

To a question on whether he saw Adib (above) being beaten up, Hazim said he did not, as he had taken refuge in the EMRS vehicle in the moments that followed.

Adib is currently being warded at National Heart Institute after being transferred there from a private hospital in Subang Jaya. His condition is said to be improving.

The riots stemmed from an attack in the early hours of Monday morning by a group of 50 masked individuals who attempted to secure the temple which is at the centre of a legal dispute over a proposed relocation.

The authorities have said that lawyers for the developer trying to gain control of the land had hired a group to do so which triggered the first riot.

Police have arrested 21 individuals in connection with the Monday morning attack, including two lawyers.

Adib sustained severe injuries during the second night of rioting.

Temple taskforce claims Muhammad Adib was hit by fire engine, not beaten

Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple task force secretary V. K. Regu (white shirt) showing videos that he claims proves that the fireman injured in the riot was actually a victim of an accident involving his own fire engine.

SUBANG JAYA: The Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple taskforce claims that the fireman who was injured on Monday (Nov 26) was not beaten up, but actually hit by a fire engine.

Taskforce secretary V. K. Regu said in a press conference Wednesday (Nov 28) that there are three videos circulating on social media that shows the fire engine reversing suddenly, with Muhammad Adib directly behind it.

"If you see the video, it shows the fireman being hit by the fire engine as it reversed and he was thrown against a fire rescue van that was behind the fire engine.

"The video also shows that the crowd did not hit the fireman, but actually tried to alert the fire engine to stop and brought the injured fireman to the hospital," he claimed in a press conference at the temple on Wednesday (Nov 28).

He added that the temple taskforce have sent the videos to the authorities and urged the police to investigate what actually took place that night.

Earlier, Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commissioner Jerald Joseph visited the temple and said the commission would investigate if there were any human rights violations over the past few days.

"We also urge the federal and state governments to resolve this issue swiftly and fairly," he said.

Muhammad Adib was first admitted to the intensive care unit of the Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare centre after he was injured in the line of duty at around 1am on Tuesday.

He was part of a team of nine firemen responding to a fire at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, where rioters were protesting its relocation.

It was reported that rioters forcefully dragged him out of his vehicle and attacked him causing him to sustain broken ribs, punctured lungs and other internal injuries.

The lawyers to the developer involved in the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple issue hired thugs that led to the riots, says Home Minister Muhyiddin (Full PC)

Muhyiddin: Developer's lawyers hired thugs behind temple riots

Wednesday, 28 Nov 20181:12 PM MYT

PUTRAJAYA: The lawyers to the developer involved in the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple issue hired thugs that led to the riots, says Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin (pic).

The Home Minister said police investigations revealed that the leader of the group which instigated the conflict was handed RM150,000 by the lawyers, which was used to pay the thugs involved from RM150 to RM300 each.

"Because they hired Malays to 'take care of things' at a Hindu temple, you can imagine the reaction it would trigger.

"As an example, imagine what would happen if you send Hindus to take care of a mosque?" said Muhyiddin at a press conference here on Wednesday (Nov 28).

Muhyiddin said the two lawyers who paid the thugs were among the 21 arrested by the police.

In a statement Monday (Nov 26), One City refuted allegations that it was behind the temple scuffle.

It said allegations that it had orchestrated the incident were malicious lies, and that the company condemned both acts of violence and insinuations that it would resort to "such despicable acts".

"Most importantly, One City is committed to adhering to the rule of law in addressing the temple which is sitting on its land," the developer said in its statement

PUTRAJAYA: Prof Dr Jomo Kwame Sundaram was named the National Academic Laureate at the Education Ministry’s 12th National Academic Awards (AAN) tonight.

The economist, who is also a member of the Council of Eminent Persons, was accorded the honour in recognition of his contributions in the field of education and economy.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad presented him the award, which also came with a RM200,000 cash prize, a certificate and trophy.

Jomo was among seven academicians honoured at the event for excellence in various categories.

The others are Assoc Prof Dr Mohd Roslan Mohd Nor (Book Publication); Faizul Noorizan (Art and Creativity - Craft Cluster); Assoc Prof Dr Mawar Safei (Art and Creativity - Creative Writing); Assoc Prof Dr Wan Zuhainis (Teaching - Pure Science Cluster); Assoc Prof Dr Fauziah Abdul Rahim (Teaching - Applied Literature and Applied Social Science); and Assoc Prof Dr Juan Joon Ching (Future Academician Award).

They each received a RM50,000 cash prize plus a certificate and a trophy.

In his speech earlier, Dr Mahathir said despite being a target of criticism, the government was still proud of the achievements shown by local higher learning institutions and academicians.

“Their achievements contribute to the country’s education system and are known at international level.

“Academicians are the key people behind the development of talented future-proof graduates, who not only have a strong command of their respective fields but also have the necessary values and intelligence to face complex challenges.

“Efforts to culturalise knowledge and moral values among graduates should not only rely on impressive institutional infrastructure and facilities, there must also be academicians who understand and internalise the country’s education philosophy by fully using contemporary teaching materials and applying the latest learning and teaching modes,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said this is where the challenges lie for academicians in higher education institutions.

Among the challenges involved, he said, include juggle between their responsibilities as educators and producing academic papers; conduct high-impact researches; work on becoming the main sources of reference for their respective fields; as well as develop creative products that can be commercialised.

Tun Siti Hasmah's Request To Hold Pakistan PM Imran Khan's Hand Wins Hearts In Pakistan

NEW DELHI (Nov 27): Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali has a new fan following in Pakistan and other places.

A video in which the Malaysian prime minister's wife asks visiting Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan if she could hold his hand has been widely shared on social media.

"Sure," a smiling Imran said in his response, prompting laughter from those present and Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Many viewers considered that moment as the most pleasant highlight of Imran's two-day visit last week.

Pakistani journalist Meher Bokhari called it the "cutest video ever", noting Siti Hasmah's "girlish excitement" and Imran's "boyish assent" to the hand-holding request at a photo shoot.

Meher finds the occasion "so fresh in the conventional and methodical world of diplomacy and politics".

One person on Twitter said: "I believe this simple yet elegant gesture is above all diplomacies."

Hassan Choudary, who posted the video on his Twitter page, commented: "Ok now this is really cute. Malaysia's First Lady asks Prime Minister Imran Khan if she can hold his hand while being photographed."

The Pakistan prime minister tweeted at the end of his Malaysia visit: "I especially want to thank the gracious Mrs Mahathir Mohamad for the wonderful lunch she arranged for us."

Imran's cricketing career made him an international star, but politics is a rough field where his country expects him to deliver as well in the face of rising economic challenges.

Becoming the prime minister of the world’s second most populous Muslim country is seen as a huge achievement in itself.

Imran has been an ardent admirer of Tun Mahathir's foreign policy and his economic management of Malaysia.

During a joint press conference with Tun Mahathir, he expressed the sentiments that he has held for Malaysia consistently for a long time.

"We look upon you as a statesman, someone who transformed his country. We have followed Malaysia's progress, especially since you came to office. We want to learn from your experience," Imran said.

Tun Mahathir was closely watched and admired for his statesmanship in Pakistan and most Muslim countries during his prime ministership from 1981 to 2003.

His return as premier after the 14th general election in May this year has generated similar public interest in his policies.

Tun Siti Hasmah has been a pillar of strength in her husband's political journey.

They met at the former King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore in 1947 and got married in 1956.

The hand-holding video generates a different kind of publicity in which Tun Mahathir and his wife are being seen in a charming light by Malaysia watchers.

"From now on, I am going to follow her more closely," said Istanbul-based academic Azize Boshnak.

Azize said she was able to relate to the prime minister's wife from a Turkish cultural perspective as well.

"She looked very familiar to Turkish women who can also do such things comfortably because we have this comforting concept of brotherhood and sisterhood in our society. According to this, Tun Siti Hasmah is the 'abla' (elder sister in Turkish) who shows sympathy towards her younger brother.

MACC to charge more former ministers

Wednesday, 28 Nov 2018

by joseph kaos jr

PUTRAJAYA: The spate of charging former leaders for corruption continues. Two ex-ministers are set to be hauled to court in the coming weeks.

Former education minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid is expected to be charged on Friday over the RM2.5bil solar power project for Sarawak rural schools, say Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) sources.

Meanwhile, former federal territories minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor is expected to be brought to court to face charges again, this time involving land sale in Kuala Lumpur.

A date is currently being fixed, sources said.

The MACC sources said Mahdzir would be summoned to the headquarters tomorrow.

The Umno vice-president is likely to be detained overnight before he is brought to court.

Mahdzir would be the third individual charged in relation with the solar project case.

On Nov 15, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor was charged in the Sessions Court for corruption. Her former aide, Datuk Rizal Mansor, was charged separately over the same case.

Mahdzir had already been called up by the MACC for questioning on Oct 16 on the solar project, which was controversially awarded to a Bintulu-based company.

On Tengku Adnan’s case, the former Umno secretary-general had already been charged earlier this month with receiving some RM3mil in bribes from property developers.

Sources said Tengku Adnan is being investigated over many more land deals in Kuala Lumpur during his tenure as Federal Territories minister.

Meanwhile, Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Rahim was summoned to the MACC headquarters yesterday.

Abdul Azeez, who is former Tabung Haji chairman, arrived at the MACC headquarters at 3.05pm in a white MPV, which bore an MP badge.

The Umno supreme council member had previously been arrested by the MACC in September and remanded for a total of 10 days.

He was being investigated over allegations that he had demanded kickbacks to help interested parties secure government contracts from the previous administra-tion.

On Monday, former auditor-general Ambrin Buang was questioned by MACC on the alleged tampering of 1Malaysia Development Bhd’s final audit report

Detik Cemas Yang Dilalui Anggota Bomba Di Seafield, Muhammad Adib ditarik dari jentera ketika pasukan berundur

Muhammad Adib ditarik dari jentera ketika pasukan berundur

MOHD HAFIZ ISMAIL
27 NOVEMBER 2018
SINAR HARIAN

Bukan mereka tinggalkan Muhammad Adib.

Be strong and healthy again’
THE STAR
Wednesday, 28 Nov 2018

SUBANG JAYA: Critically injured fireman Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim is due to be married next month and all his fiancee wants is for him to regain his strength for the lovebirds to mark the momentous occasion together.

Nurul Najihah Mohd Radzi, 25, was anxiously awaiting news about her fiance after he was wheeled into the intensive care unit of Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care here yesterday morning.

“I want him to be strong and healthy again,” said the retail executive.

Muhammad Adib, 24, was critically injured in the line of duty after he and his fellow firemen responded to an emergency at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Monday night.

The pandemonium at the temple first started in the wee hours of Monday following a scuffle between two rival groups on the site over the temple’s relocation from USJ 25 to USJ 23.

The chaos continued on Monday night, during which Muhammad Adib was pulled by one of the rioters from the emergency vehicle he was in and attacked, causing him to suffer broken ribs and other internal injuries.

Nurul Najihah had, in a posting on Facebook earlier, prayed for her beloved to regain consciousness.

“You are strong. Get up quick, please. Pray for my fiance ... I am not strong enough to watch you like this,” she said.

Nurul Najihah told the media that she first realised her fiance was in trouble when she woke at 3am to see that she had missed a call from his teammate.

“I was asleep when he called me as I had taken some flu medication,” she said.

Her fears were confirmed when she returned the teammate’s call.

She then rushed to the medical centre.

“The last time I saw him was when we had dinner together at about 6pm on Monday before he reported for his 8pm shift,” she said.

Although little has changed since he was brought in to the unit, Nurul Najihah took solace in knowing that some of Muhammad Adib’s swellings had subsided.

On her Facebook page, Nurul also posted pictures of the incident, showing the wrecked vehicle that was damaged by rioters.

Also included were two pictures of her fiance, suave in his bomba uniform and smiling at the camera.

Malaysians who read her post wished the couple their best, leaving comments such as “May God take care of him” and “We are all praying for his speedy recovery”.

Malaysian leaders are also hoping for Muhammad Adib to pull through as many of them, including Zuraida Kamaruddin whose Housing and Local Government Ministry oversees the Fire and Rescue Department, went to the hospital to visit him.

“He is now in critical condition and on life support,” she told reporters, adding that there were injuries to his chest which were causing him breathing difficulty.

“It appears like he was hit and stomped on, which caused his ribs to fracture and puncture his lungs,” she said.

Zuraida said the incident should serve as a lesson to Malaysians to not take the law into their own hands.

She also said she would stand as a guarantor for the family to help pay for Muhammad Adib’s medical bills.

Other leaders who visited Muhammad Adib included Selangor Mentri Besar Amirudin Shari and MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran.

Although overwhelmed by emotions over the incident, his fellow teammates gathered at the hospital to pray for his condition to improve.

It has been a difficult time for the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, which only last month lost six personnel after they perished during a mission to rescue a teenager who had fallen into a mining pool in Puchong.
