KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a three-day state visit to Malaysia starting Tuesday.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Wisma Putra) said that the visit from April 15 to 17 was at the invitation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.

In conjunction with the visit, Xi will be greeted with a national celebration ceremony followed by a face-to-face visit to Sultan Ibrahim at the Istana Negara. Sultan Ibrahim also celebrated President Xi and his delegation at a national banquet.

Xi, who is accompanied by Cabinet ministers and senior Chinese government officials, is scheduled to hold a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss bilateral cooperation and exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

"The two leaders will then witness the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding, Agreements and Notes between Malaysia and China," the statement said.

Anwar will also host an official dinner at the Seri Perdana Complex, Putrajaya to celebrate Xi.

The visit is part of Xi's first series of state visits for 2025, which also includes Vietnam and Cambodia.

During Xi's last state visit to Malaysia in 2013, the two countries elevated diplomatic relations to the level of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China have been established since May 31, 1974. The two countries, which celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations last year, enjoy strong bilateral ties.

Since 2009, China has remained Malaysia's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years.

Total trade between the two countries is worth RM484.12 billion in 2024, accounting for 16.8 per cent of Malaysia's global trade total (RM2.879 trillion).

As the ASEAN Chair and Coordinating Country for ASEAN-China Dialogue Relations, Malaysia remains committed to advancing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between ASEAN and China.

The Foreign Ministry stated that these efforts will continue through dialogue, mutual trust and initiatives that bring benefits to the people of ASEAN and China.
