MUAR: The process of nominating candidates for the Simpang Jeram State Assembly By-Election (PRK) saw a three-cornered clash including an Independent candidate.

The seat will see competition between the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, who is the Deputy Head of the Bakri Ar ea Trust, Nazri Abdul Rahman who is an engineer and the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate, Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya who is also a vascular consultant and endovascular surgeon.

While the Independent candidate is S. Jeganathan, 55 years old, who entered the third time to stake his luck in the DUN seat, namely two series of elections before in the Bukit Naning DUN and this time in the Simpang Jeram DUN.

The announcement was made by the Simpang Jeram state election management officer, Jamil Hasni Abdullah after the review of the candidate nomination process was completed.

"I would like to inform you that I have received nomination papers from three candidates for the Simpang Jeram state assembly.

"I have checked the nomination papers and after checking, I am satisfied that no nomination papers have been rejected," he said after completing the nomination process for Simpang Jeram state assembly candidates at the Intan Sultan Ibrahim Diamond Jubilee Hall, here, today.

This by-election was held following the death of its incumbent, the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub on July 23 due to a brain haemorrhage.

The deceased won the Simpang Jeram state seat since 2018 before successfully defending it again in the State Election (PRN) in March last year.

Simpang Jeram state assembly has 40,379 voters with 40,373 of them being regular voters while the other six absentee voters are overseas.

In the last Johor PRN, Amanah, represented by Salahuddin, obtained 8,749 votes, winning with a majority of 2,389 votes after defeating the Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate, Zarul Salleh, who only got 6,360 votes while the BN candidate, Datuk Lokman Md. Don got 6,062 votes.

Salahuddin won the Simpang Jeram state seat for the first time during the last 14th General Election (GE14).
