STOCKHOLM: Bomb experts were called to the scene after a city in Sweden was shaken by four explosions within an hour.

After 1 a.m. local time, Gothenburg Police received reports of two explosions at separate addresses.

The police announced that both locations were immediately closed and technical investigations were continuing.

"There were no reports of injured people, only damage to buildings," he said.

An hour later two more explosions were reported, namely a few minutes apart in the Norsborg area on the southern edge of Stockholm and in Nykoping, about 100 kilometers (km) to the south of the capital.

Police said no one was injured at either scene. All four explosions occurred in residential buildings.

Sweden has struggled to curb incidents of gunfire and bombings in recent years as terrorist groups resolve issues that have raised the issue of drug trafficking.

Gothenburg police told AFP it was too early to speculate on the motive for the two explosions in the city.

According to data from the Swedish police, the country recorded 90 explosions and 101 more cases of attempted or prepared bombings, while a total of 109 explosions had been recorded up to 15 August.

The police alleged that the incident of the bombing was aimed at frightening the target, when shots were used to kill and eliminate the enemy.

According to police records, Sweden recorded a total of 391 shootings in 2022, 62 of which were fatal, up from 45 in the previous year. - AFP
