PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak says he did not attend the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's installation ceremony due to the required change of outfit following last-minute seat adjustments.

"No confusion but receive a call at 6.30am that there was a change of seat.

"Originally seated at seat Number 10, reserved for former prime minister under the ceremony protocol but was changed at the very last minute to the Orang Besar Pahang row, " he said in a Facebook posting.

Najib Razak, who is the Pekan MP, has a hereditary title from Pahang, the title Orang Kaya Indera Shahbandar, and is one of the Orang Besar Berempat.

Najib said the change of seat would require him to dress as Pahang nobleman.

"The ceremonial attire for Orang Besar Pahang and for the former prime minister is not same. Every position has its protocol, " he said.

"At that point, there was not enough time to get the attire from Pekan, " added Najib.

Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah was officially installed as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong in a majestic ceremony steeped in royal custom and tradition at Istana Negara on Tuesday (July 30).

The installation ceremony, attended by eminent guests, took place at the Balairong Seri with Sultan Abdullah taking his Oath of Installation, marking the formal commencement of his tenure as the Supreme Head of the Federation.

Politicians should not be awarded military ranks’

Politicians should not be awarded military ranks’

Thursday, 25 Jul 201912:00 AM MYT

By FARIK ZOLKEPLI

— AFP Relaxnews

PETALING JAYA: The military ranks are given purely as an honour but the hostility they have triggered is very much real. The Defence Ministry’s award of honorary ranks to the Selangor Mentri Besar and Melaka Chief Minister has drawn backlash from various parties including the Opposition and military veterans.

Amirudin Shari was made an honorary Brigadier-General in the army for his role as the patron of the Selangor Territorial Army Support Committee (Jakpaw), while Adly Zahari was conferred the same rank in his capacity as patron of Jakpaw Melaka.

This decision to give the state leaders the honorary ranks surprised many people because on April 19, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu said his ministry had stopped awarding honorary titles to politicians and celebrities, who would also not be allowed to don military uniforms.

“Only those who have undergone military training, such as in the Territorial Army, can wear uniforms,” said Mohamad according to a Bernama report.

He added that the previous practice was halted to “honour the services and sacrifices of soldiers who have put in a lot of hard work and to prevent the devaluing of the ranks”.

MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong was the first to call out Mohamad on this about-turn, saying the minister has failed to keep his word.

“Amirudin is not just an ordinary leader. He is the Selangor Pakatan Harapan state chief,” said Dr Wee in a Facebook post on Tuesday. “Adly is a Melaka Parti Amanah Negara state leader, and Mohamad Sabu is the president of Amanah.”

National Patriots Association (Patriot) committee member Lt-Col (Rtd) Ahmad Ghazali Abu Hassan said the decision to award honorary ranks destroys the principle of separation of power between the military and politicians.

In the past, such ranks were not linked to politicians. “We had people from all walks of life from professors to corporate figures joining (Territorial Army) as volunteers and going through their paces to rise through the ranks.

“The volunteers would go through a proper training regime and earned their ranks on merit,” he said, stressing that such appointments should be apolitical.

“The previous government started the practice of the Mentri Besar being the patron of his state’s territorial army.

“I had hoped that Pakatan Harapan would do away with such practices,” he said.

Patriot also pointed out that Adly should have done more to reciprocate the honour of holding the rank.

“In this instance, the Melaka Chief Minister was sporting a beard, a clear violation of military dress regulation. In the military, only navy personnel and officers are permitted to have beard,” said Ahmad Ghazali.

He cited Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin as a good example of someone who went through proper training and had proven himself before being appointed as commander of the 508 Regiment of the Territorial Army. Khairy has since resigned from the post.

When contacted for comments on the backlash, Mohamad asked The Star to refer to the ministry’s statement yesterday.

In the statement, the ministry explained that the two state leaders were made honorary army brigadier-generals because they are Jakpaw patrons in Selangor and Melaka.

Amirudin was bestowed the honorary rank by Mohamad in a ceremony which was also attended by ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohd Zuki Ali and Army Chief Jen Datuk Seri Ahmad Hasbullah Nawawi.

The appointments of Amirudin and Adly as Jakpaw patrons were approved by the Armed Forces Council on May 24.

The Jakpaw is a committee established at every state to encourage people to join the Territorial Army. The patrons are the Mentri Besar or Chief Minister and they were appointed with the approval of the Armed Forces Council.

The Jakpaw chairmanship is allocated to the respective state secretary, who is appointed either by the Mentri Besar, Chief Minister or Federal Territories Minister. The committee chairman is awarded the rank of honorary colonel.

All honorary ranks are subject to the approval of the Armed Forces Council and consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong under Section 198 of the Armed Forces Act 1972.

According to the Defence Ministry, an honorary rank can be withdrawn if a person no longer holds office or if he commits an offence that tarnishes the name of the armed forces.

Court allows questions on Saudi ‘donation’ deposited into Najib’s accounts

Court allows questions on Saudi ‘donation’ deposited into Najib’s accounts

Former Ambank relationship manager Joanna Yu Ging Ping says ‘a lot of people’ knew about the inflow of funds into Najib Razak’s bank accounts.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court in Najib Razak’s SRC International corruption trial today allowed the defence to question a witness on money which purportedly came from a donation deposited in the former prime minister’s bank account.

Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali allowed defence counsel Harvinderjit Singh to cross-examine former Ambank relationship manager Joanna Yu Ging Ping after hearing a short submission.

“Proceed,” the judge said in ruling that the defence could continue to cross-examine the 54th witness.

Earlier, ad hoc prosecutor V Sithambaram had got up to object when Harvinderjit questioned Yu on money going into Najib’s Ambank current account ending with the numbers 694.

“Events related to the inflow of Arab money are irrelevant to the charge the accused is facing,” he said.

Sithambaram said there must be some proximity to the charges but events starting from 2011 were “too far off”.

“It has only relevance to the 1MDB case which the accused is (also) charged with,” he said.

In the 1MDB case, to be heard later, Najib is slapped with 25 charges of money laundering and abuse of power over alleged 1MDB funds amounting to RM2.228 billion in his AmBank account between February 2011 and December 2014.

In response, Harvinderjit said he was questioning Yu to establish Najib’s state of mind as only other people were involved in the movement of funds.

“My client is of the opinion that the money he spent came from the overseas donations,” he said.

However, Sithambaram said evidence from Ambank Raja Chulan branch manager R Uma Devi had revealed that there was only RM763.71 in his current account ending with the number 880 before the RM42 million was deposited.

Uma Devi had said Najib had closed the “964” account in August 2013 before opening three current accounts that included “880”.

Today, Yu said US$100 million was deposited in Najib’s account in 2011, another US$375 million in 2012 and RM2.6 billion (US$681 million) in 2013.

She said the money came as a donation and gift from a member of the Saudi royal family, Faisal bin Turki, the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Finance and Blackstone Asia Real Estate Partners.

She said only US$620 million was returned via Tanore Finance Corp in August 2013

Yu says there was “nothing to hide” in regards to the massive inflow of funds into Najib’s account between 2011 and 2013.

“A lot of people knew about this amount. The relevant department handling the current account, the bosses and Bank Negara Malaysia were in the know,” she said.

She also said fugitive financier Low Taek Jho, also known as Jho Low, seemed to be the person issuing instructions on Najib’s bank accounts, while former SRC International Sdn Bhd CEO Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, the accounts’ mandate holder, was only seen formalising the instructions.

Yu said Jho Low used the nomenclatures “pie” and “satay” to refer to US dollar and ringgit transactions.

“That is what Low used (in the Blackberry messenger chats),” she said.

Najib is facing six charges of money laundering and criminal breach of trust in the transfer of RM42 million to his account from SRC International, a former unit of 1MDB.

He is also accused of abusing his power as prime minister by giving government guarantees on SRC International’s RM4 billion loan from Retirement Fund Inc.

He was charged with committing the offences at AmIslamic Bank Bhd on Jalan Raja Chulan and the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya between Aug 17, 2011, and Feb 10, 2015.

The hearing before Nazlan continues.

: The DAP’s P Ramasamy today asked why the Malaysian Indian Transformation Agency (Mitra) is distributing assistance for Indians in the B40 group through organisations

Give aid to Indian poor directly, not through NGOs, says Ramasamy

-July 30, 2019 4:14 PM

P Ramasamy says the practice of channelling funds to the community indirectly through private organisations was done by the previous Barisan Nasional government.

KUALA LUMPUR: The DAP’s P Ramasamy today asked why the Malaysian Indian Transformation Agency (Mitra) is distributing assistance for Indians in the B40 group through organisations, and not directly.

He claimed that more often than not, these organisations took a significant portion of the funds for payment of their own staff and other organisational expenses.

Ramasamy, who is also Penang deputy chief minister II, said the practice of channelling funds to the community indirectly through private organisations was done by the previous Barisan Nasional government.

Now, he said in a statement, the Pakatan Harapan government was doing the same.

”It is not wrong to give funds through private organisations as many of them are managed by honest and responsible individuals but this approach does not address the dire needs of the thousands of poor Indians who, through no fault of theirs, have no decent jobs as they are discriminated against in the public and private sectors.” he said.

He said lack of finance was obstructing the educational advancement of many Indians.

“Why can’t those responsible devise a system to directly assist these students? Why should funds be diverted to organisations that have no direct role in the welfare of Indian students?” he asked.

He also claimed that “hundreds if not thousands” of small-time Indian businessmen were hungry for startup funds as they had been shunned by banks and credit organisations because of their lack of experience.

These “poor Indian potential entrepreneurs” badly needed funds but Mitra had failed to do this, Ramasamy said.

He said Mitra was not allocating funds to Indian welfare homes, especially those for children.

”Hundreds of welfare homes taking care of abandoned children are in deep financial crises. Unfortunately, these homes may lack the glamour to attract attention from possible donors.

”More than six decades have elapsed since independence but, unfortunately, we have not come up with an effective method to assist the poor and the unfortunate directly,” he said.

HR Ministry investigating Johor company which refused to give employees a public holiday declared for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's installation

HR Ministry investigating company which denied employees an off day for King's installation (updated)

PETALING JAYA: The Human Resource Ministry is investigating a company which allegedly refused to give its employees a day off for the public holiday declared for the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's installation on Tuesday (July30).

The ministry said that it has received information that the Johor Baru-based company was not giving its employees a paid day off and was now being investigated by its labour law unit.

"The employer will be reminded of its responsibility to adhere to Section 60D(1) of the Employment Act 1955 to provide the employees 'a paid holiday at his ordinary rate of pay', " the ministry said in a statement on Sunday (July 28).

The Ministry also noted that employees are entitled to 11 paid holidays – which includes five mandatory holidays.

It added that with the extra public holiday, employees are entitled to a total of 12 paid holidays in 2019.

The ministry added that the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department would take action against the employer if it failed to comply with its responsibilities under Section 60D of the Employment Act 1955.

The letter, which was addressed to all its employees, said there were already 11 days gazetted as public holidays and was not choosing the King's installation day as one.

The letter also warned employees they would be served a warning letter if they were absent without leave.

The company also said it "will not entertain any future additional public holiday announcement by the government, the list of holiday stated by the company is final. (sic)"

The company was criticised on social media for not observing the public holiday.

Last week, the Government declared July 30 as a public holiday in conjunction with the coronation of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah.

When contacted via SMS, a company spokesman said they would close for business on Tuesday (July 30).

Newly installed king cautions against undermining, destroying harmony

KUALA LUMPUR: In his maiden address as the newly installed Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah called on the people today to refrain from inciting misunderstanding by raising matters than can undermine and destroy harmony.

He stressed that unity and harmony are the pillars and strength of the nation.

“Playing with fire will burn not only oneself but also the whole village,” he said at his installation as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara.

Sultan Abdullah stressed that the Institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is important in the system of nationhood in Malaysia which practises parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy and that the institution is not a mere symbol.

“It is the basis of unity, of bringing the people together and of sparking the spirit of patriotism.

“It is a spirit that, if inherited and cherished by every single citizen, can bring forth a sense of love and loyalty to the country,” he said.

Recognising this fact, he pledged to do his best to promote unity and tolerance among the people of all races and religions.

“I will put the people first; respect the old and honour the young. I will express all this with great humility,” he said, welcoming the government’s effort to strengthen unity through the establishment of the Consultative Council for People’s Harmony.

Recalling the auspicious date of July 10, 1980, when his late father, Sultan Ahmad Shah, was installed as the seventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah said it was destined by Allah that he be installed today on the same throne used by his father 39 years ago.

He also hailed the late Sultan Ahmad Shah as a stern, yet open-minded personality.

“His relationship with the people was so intimate; it clearly showed his intention of always wanting the best for the people,” he said, and requested the audience to pray for his father’s soul to be placed among the righteous.

Sultan Abdullah said his reign as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is somewhat destined because Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is now the seventh prime minister, was the fourth prime minister during the reign of the late Sultan Ahmad Shah.

So, he said, there is truth in the saying that a great statesman will never become out of date over time or in terms of age.

Therefore, Sultan Abdullah said, he hopes the close cooperation and understanding that existed between his late father and the prime minister will continue during his rule for the sake of the country’s prosperity and the people.

Sultan Abdullah also expressed optimism that the Pakatan Harapan government led by a widely experienced and well-informed Mahathir will be able to withstand any obstacle ahead and lead the country to the pinnacle of success.

He also welcomed the government’s efforts in restructuring the country’s development plans and strengthening its finances, besides enhancing governance and integrity as well as combating corruption and defending the rule of law.

“I would like to congratulate my government for its foresightedness in coming up with a new economic model known as the Shared Prosperity Vision 2030.

“I hope that efforts to eradicate poverty are also given priority. The cycle of the legacy of poverty should be addressed immediately because it can affect the agenda of building a developed nation,” he said.

Sultan Abdullah expressed his gratitude to the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, and his consort Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, for gracing the ceremony, and described their presence as a manifestation of the close relationship enjoyed by Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam.

He also paid tribute to the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, who had also graced the ceremony.

“I am extremely honoured by the presence of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan. Sheikh Mohammed and I have come a long way since our military training in Sandhurst and, later on, in Oxford. We have shared fond memories together as friends and brothers.

“I also would like to take this opportunity to extend my greatest and heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all my guests who have flown from all over the world to be here on this auspicious occasion. Your presence has, undoubtedly, made this ceremony even more special,” he said.

Sultan Abdullah said he was also touched and honoured by the pledge of allegiance by the prime minister in representing the government, civil servants, security forces and the general public at the ceremony.

In concluding his address, he called on everyone to pray for the country to remain peaceful and prosperous and to be always under the protection of Allah.

Wild elephant dies after being run over by lorry in Hulu Terengganu

HULU TERENGGANU (Bernama): A wild elephant was killed after it was hit by a lorry carrying iron ore at KM44 of Jalan Kuala Berang-Aring here Sunday (July 28) night.

Hulu Terengganu district police chief DSP Mohd Adli Mat Daud said the incident occurred at about 10.30pm when the lorry was heading from Gua Musang to the Kemaman Port.

Driver Emyhaizi Ahmad, 32, reported that a group of wild elephants suddenly came out of the forest area, and he could not stop the vehicle in time.

"The weather at the time of the incident was good, but the distance was too close for the driver to avoid the group of wild elephants. The crash caused an elephant to come under the rear tyre of the trailer head, and the animal died at the scene due to severe head injury.

Mohd Adli said the remains of the elephant were removed from the road with the help of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak previously submitted an affidavit for a 2018 defamation suit that confirmed RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd had entered his bank accounts without his knowledge, the High Court heard today.

The prosecution’s 55th witness, lawyer Ranjit Singh, affirmed this in court after he was asked by the prosecution to tender and verify original copies of the writ of summons and statement of claim related to the lawsuit filed by Najib through his lawyer Datuk Mohd Hafarizam Harun on October 30, 2015.

Ranjit previously represented former transport minister Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik after Najib sued the latter over allegedly defamatory statements he made during a ceremony at University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

He said Najib admitted in a sworn affidavit that US$700 million (RM2.8 billion) — purportedly part of a donation — had entered his personal bank accounts along with RM42 million from SRC International without him knowing it was channeled through two intermediaries: Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd and Ihsan Perdana Sdn Bhd.

“Datuk Seri Najib conceded that US$700 million did enter his accounts, although he asserts it as personal donation.

“He also conceded RM42million had entered his accounts but has no knowledge of it and was done through two intermediaries between December 2014 and February 2015,” Ranjit said.

The admission was made through an affidavit in reply to Dr Ling’s counterclaim against Najib dated February 23, 2016.

Earlier during a reading of Dr Ling’s counterclaim, Ranjit said the transfer of RM42 million via two intermediaries into Najib’s private accounts had caused public perception that dishonesty was involved and that Najib was unfit to be prime minister.

On May 22, 2018, Najib withdrew the lawsuit against Dr Ling without the liberty to refile and was also ordered to pay Dr Ling RM25,000 in costs as part of the withdrawal.

According to Najib’s lawyer Mohd Hafarizam, he had advised his client to drop the suit following a change in the political landscape of the country and there were other more important matters to attend to.

During his turn to examine the witness, chief defence lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah argued that the evidence submitted today was irrelevant for purpose of showing prima facie.

Defence lawyer Harvinderjit Singh then directed Ranjit to read out the entirety of Dr Ling’s comment in relation to Najib being unfit to be prime minister.

“Dia ambil orang punya duit dan taruk dalam personal account. Mana boleh (He took people’s money and put it in his account. How is this acceptable?),” Ranjit read from the transcript in Bahasa Melayu to the court.

Asked whether he was approached by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for the purpose of the trial, Ranjit said he was not but was instead subpoenaed by the prosecution.

“If I recall, it was Datuk Sithambaram who told me I may be called to testify,” he said referring Datuk V. Sithambaram who was ad hoc prosecutor.

Najib, who is also Pekan MP, is currently on trial for alleged abuse of position, money-laundering and criminal breach of trust over RM42 million of funds from SRC International, which is a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

The citizenship application process will be shortened from three years

Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (2nd from left) during the handing over of approval for citizenships ceremony in Kuching today.

KUCHING: Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin says the citizenship application process will be shortened from three years to one as part of efforts to ease the hardships of applicants.

He said the government would also review the standard operating procedure (SOP) for applications to make it more efficient.

“However, citizenship will only be granted to those who are eligible, and who qualify under Section 3 of the Federal Constitution, Citizenship Rules 1964, marriage registration laws, immigration laws and other related laws.

“Applicants must fulfil the requirements in terms of good behaviour, residency period and the ability to converse fluently in Bahasa Malaysia,” he said during a ceremony to hand over approval for citizenship for 31 recipients here today.

He added that security screening will be implemented to ensure that applications are all genuine.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 29 — Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali joined today Opposition parties PAS and Umno in calling for Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to serve out his full term as the prime minister.

Lauding PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s endorsement on behalf of the Islamist party and Umno, Azmin said he has consistently called for Dr Mahathir to be given all five years of his mandate to rebuild Malaysia.

He also added that the two Opposition parties’ endorsement of Dr Mahathir did not mean an end to their political differences with the ruling Pakatan Harapan, saying that this could continue without harming the larger population.

“The leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir is required to ensure the stability, continuity and consistency of government policies to drive investment as well as create jobs and prosperity for all.

Inspector-General Abdul Hamid Bador.

KUALA LUMPUR: Top cop Abdul Hamid Bador made a strong statement today against the drug menace in the country, saying even his own officers are being arrested for drug use.

“If we do not check (this) now, we could lead the way just like Columbia,” he told reporters after launching an event in Cheras here today.

“Addicts are doubling. My own men are arrested weekly – they are high on meth and syabu,” he added.

This year alone, 30 police officers had been arrested for taking drugs, he said.

He said the police need to “sharpen their weapons” to fight the war against drugs, adding that more people are now daring enough to rent out factories and even terrace houses for the manufacture of drugs.

Tun Siti Hasmah leads charge to save Malayan tiger

Siti Hasmah leads charge to save Malayan tiger

Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali (third from right) calls for greater efforts to save the Malayan tiger. On her left is Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

PUTRAJAYA: The prime minister’s wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, has made an urgent appeal to the government, the private sector and citizens to work together to protect and support conservation efforts of the endangered Malayan tiger.

The patron for the “Save the Malayan Tiger” campaign believed all stakeholders had a role to play in ensuring the continuation of the species. It is believed that there are fewer than 200 Malayan tigers left in the country.

“Because of our own greed, we may not be able to continue seeing these animals created by God if they go extinct,” she said in her speech in conjunction with the Global Tiger Day 2019 and the launch of the “Save the Malayan Tiger” campaign for 2019-2020.

“This species is only found in Peninsular Malaysia and if we don’t work together with other agencies, they will become extinct. Then, they will only be seen as symbols on logos and T-shirts.”

Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Xavier Jayakumar were present at the launch.

In her speech, Siti Hasmah revealed that she had always wanted to hug a tiger.

She announced the names for three tiger cubs under the care of Zoo Negara — Wira, Hebat and Melur.

“Even these tiger cubs are already grown. They are three months old but already three feet wide.

“I was unable to hug them because as soon as they saw me, they started howling!”

The Malayan tiger is seen as a sub-species of Panthera tigris because of its unique genetic make-up compared with other Asian tigers. They are classed as “critically endangered” under the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Xavier, in his speech, said the decrease in population of the Malayan tiger is caused by a reduction in habitat areas, displacement due to the opening-up of forest land and land-use changes.

He added that the species was also a a target of hunting activities and illegal trade due to high demand on the black market.

Xavier said his ministry had set up a “Save the Malayan Tiger” fund for companies and individuals. So far, the fund has collected RM1.34 million.

He thanked Yayasan Al-Bukhary, Berjaya Corporation, Ranhill Holdings, AEON, KLIATV, students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Baru Sungai Long, Selangor, and students of KDU University College for their contributions.

“I hope many more would come forward to help in the campaign.”

Xavier also announced a collaborative enforcement operation between Perhilitan and the police to fight encroachers and illegal hunting.

PUTRAJAYA: Two General Operations Force battalions of Senoi Praaq have been deployed to assist the Wildlife Department to hunt down poachers in the forests, especially poachers hunting for the Malayan tiger which is now in danger of becoming extinct, said Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador.

He said one of the battalions, comprising 500 members, would conduct patrols in identified forest areas with the Wildlife and National Parks Department, while the other would be placed on stand-by.

Hamid said as the IGP, it was his responsibility to provide whatever assistance required by the water, land and natural resources ministry in conjunction with today’s Save The Tiger Day.

“My purpose of giving the task to the Senoi Praaq (Battalion) is because they are skilled as trackers and they are also used to the jungle environment.

“This is the land in which their ancestors earned their living and now the situation is getting worse with foreigners unscrupulously coming to rob the rich fauna in the country,” he told the media after attending the Global Tiger Day 2019 and launch of the Save Harimau Malaya 2019-2020 campaign here today.

Hamid said the police would also provide training to Wildlife officers and personnel on the use of firearms and will also provide standard procedures to deal with threats from illegal hunters.

“So, the Senoi Praaq battalion is ready to assist the Wildlife Department… their lives are threatened by illegal hunters from abroad who are bold and vicious. We will shoot them, if necessary,” he added.

Hamid said he had also instructed the Special Branch to set up a special section to gather information on illegal hunters and those involved in trafficking wild animal parts.

“The Special Branch is also given the responsibility to monitor sandalwood. This means we monitor everything including the flora. Everything that is stolen from the jungle, action will be taken by the police,” he added.

The minister for natural resources, Xavier Jayakumar, said three areas would be given focus: Belum-Temenggor Tropical Forest, Pahang-Terengganu National Park and Endau Rompin National Park.

Ia dikatakan berpunca apabila Aishah menasihat Syafie agar meninggalkan satu sifat buruk dirinya.

SERI ISKANDAR: A new law to curb the use of vapes, shisha and e-cigarettes is being formulated, says Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.

The Health Minister said currently the matter is under the observation of the ministry’s legal advisor.

“We will refer the matter to the Attorney General's Chambers soon before the new law is drafted,” he told reporters after the launching of the National Level Combi convention at a hotel here Sunday (July 28).

Dzulkefly said that the task force headed by his deputy would also help find ways to control the use of e-cigarettes or vaping.

“There will be more enforcement efforts to curb its accessibility, especially to students and those below 18. There will be follow up statements from the task force from time to time on its effectiveness,” he added.

He was asked to comment on social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye’s statement that a new Bill should be proposed to control the use of e-cigarettes, vapes and shisha.

Lee had said that the Bill should also take into account similar products that could influence children, such as the “Ghost Smoke” candy.

Dzulkefly added that when the new law is in place, the current Tobacco Act would be included.

On the "Ghost Smoke" candy, Dzulkefly said that the ministry had taken the necessary samples and would be making its findings public soon.

“We will be in a better position to state our stand on the matter once the results are out,” he said.

WIth Malaysia's 16th King -Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertua n Agong ke-16, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah Ibni Almarhun Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Al Musta'in Billah Shah.

A King’s wish for peace and unity

Sunday, 28 Jul 2019

by rozaid a. rahman and mergawati zulfakar

KUALA LUMPUR: As he prepares to be installed as the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on his 60th birthday on Tuesday, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah is making it clear that he wants to see a Malaysia whose citizens are united and living in a peaceful, stable and harmonious country during his five-year reign.

However, Sultan Abdullah was quick to acknowledge that his wish may not be fulfilled in the short term.

“I am being realistic. I do not dare to promise (that a united Malaysia) will happen, but that is my wish. I will be very sad if over the next five years, our country is in chaos,” he said.

The King also expressed his hope that the government under the leadership of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would further strengthen the country’s economy, improve the well-being of the people and be more active in helping those who in need.“I can only pray that we do not face this problem (chaos). I hope the rakyat will be cautious and continue to be wise in deciding the country’s future,” the King said in an interview with The Star.

“It has been more than 160 days. I want to get it over and done with. I want to concentrate on my tasks as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“Yes, the installation ceremony is important for the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which is part of the elements of the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

“This is a tradition for each Yang di-Pertuan Agong to undergo and,

of course, it is an important event for me, especially, to be installed as the 16th King.”

On Jan 15, Sultan Abdullah was proclaimed the sixth Sultan of Pahang, taking over from Almarhum Sultan Ahmad Shah.

On Jan 24, he was elected the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong during the Special Meeting of the Conference of Rulers.

Sultan Abdullah took the oath and signed the instrument of office on Jan 31.

This was the first time a sitting King granted an interview to the media in recent times.

Over the course of the hour-long interview, Sultan Abdullah spoke on a wide range of issues including his legacy, family, passion for sports and his subjects.

He was also asked his thoughts on the challenge that the Malays were divided.

In a carefully worded reply, the King said he could only give advice.

“We are in the same boat and we cannot afford to have citizens who are not united.

“We always talk about unity, I touched on it in my address in Parliament. We have to prove this (unity). Please do not overreact and try to cause animosity, I would be quite worried if this continues,” he said.

Sultan Abdullah also addressed the question of the royals under attack, especially on social media.

Saying that he could only speak on behalf of Istana Pahang, Sultan Abdullah pointed out that the royals were no different because just like any institution or palace, they were constantly being watched by the people.

“As long as you do something for the rakyat and give something to them, that is the least we can do without politicising (it). Usually when we are deemed to be trying to politicise something, that is when we will be criticised heavily.

“But let me say it here – when we are trying to get close to the rakyat, it is for humanitarian reasons and of our own goodwill, and not to get praises or votes. That has never crossed my mind,” he said.

Sultan Abdullah also said he was constantly reminded of the need for the monarchy to be relevant in a more open political and democratic atmosphere.

“If you feel that you are here as a museum piece, then you will end up in a museum. If you are here to serve and to be with the people, I am sure the people will know how to value you.

“I can’t speak for the future; this is all Allah’s will. Whatever system there may be, there is no guarantee that it will be there forever.

“I thank God that our constitutional monarchy has been in existence for so long and it depends on the rakyat to decide on this.

“I pray that what is more important is to have the best system (in place) for Malaysia so that the people are protected, as well as race and religion,” he said.

When asked whether he felt any pressure from certain groups, he did not deny it, though he described it as normal.

“It is a way of life. You will feel the pressure in any position of leadership. The question is, how do you manage such pressure? For me, I will try to understand the issue.

“I will engage with the respective people and we try to settle it through discussions. There is no problem that cannot be resolved if we sit at the same table and discuss it.

“Other countries also face their own problems, but our advantage is that we live in a multiracial and multireligious country with complex and very sensitive issues.

“So, we must understand the sensitivity of certain issues and if possible, we should avoid them and not twist them to the point of causing disunity among the people,” he said.

The King also addressed the question that many see the Sultans as being linked only to the Malays and Islam.

“The Raja-Raja Melayu must be Sultans for all races. I am a Malay and will automatically uphold my religion, but this does not mean that we should look down on other religions or other races. Not at all.

“On my part, in Pahang, we have never claimed that certain religions were wrong or certain races were wrong. No!

“Together we built a state or country and we should not be judgmental towards anyone for that matter. The perception given is not quite correct.

“Do not accuse the monarchy of being only for the Malays. That is not the way,” Sultan Abdullah said.

He also said it was not right to encroach on other religions.

“We have to respect other religions and races. There is no such thing as suppressing other religions or other (races). That is not right.

“We should not talk like that. We should co-exist and live together in our country, Malaysia. Don’t be suspicious and start apportioning blame on certain races,” he added.

Najwan denies he has hand in sex video scandal

Saturday, 27 Jul 2019

SHAH ALAM: Kota Anggerik assemblyman Najwan Halimi has denied that he was one of the masterminds behind a viral sex video after he was questioned by the police.

“It is nonsense and ridiculous to say that I am one of the masterminds,” he said, adding that he was merely summoned by police to assist in the investigation.

“I was called to Bukit Aman to assist in the investigation, and my statement was recorded over one-and-a-half hours,” said Najwan when met at a Fama event here yesterday.

Asked why he was being implicated, Najwan, who is often seen as neutral in the rift between party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his deputy Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, said it was all a political ploy.

“I feel this is more of a game on social media to politicise the current situation and create divisions within the party and its leaders,” he said.

To a question on which camp he belonged to, Najwan said he was a member of the ‘PKR camp’.

“We move as a single team and we are all in the party together to deliver the people’s agenda.

“We must not escalate the assumption that there is a split in the party,” said Najwan.

He said the fact that both Anwar and Azmin had voiced their commitment to being in a single team was sufficient to quash all negative assumptions.

He pledged also to give his fullest cooperation to the police.

Former Santubong PKR Youth chief Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz has claimed to be one of the men in the viral sex video and alleged that the other person was Azmin, who denied it.

Haziq campaigned for Najwan in the party polls last year when he contested for the PKR Youth Chief position.

Several people were remanded for questioning, including Anwar’s political secretary Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.

The surgery was performed by a group of specialist doctors from different fields together with UK-based trainee surgeon Dr Nur Amalina Che Bakri, who brought the baby and her parents to London to seek treatment.

Ainul's plight caught not just Malaysians but also Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad who also visited her when he was in the United Kingdom on a three-day working visit last month.

Ainul's story received the public's attention when a video recording of the baby who had a tumour in her mouth went viral on social media. - Bernama

PETALING JAYA: A close friend of Rihana Oksana Gorbatenko, the Russian beauty who married Sultan Muhammad V last year, has dismissed a claim that the Kelantan ruler is not the biological father of her baby.

Liliya Nastaeva described the claim by the sultan’s lawyer Koh Tien Hua as “nonsense”, and said it had angered Oksana’s family and friends.

“We are very sorry that his royal though former, highness chose such a talkative and unprofessional lawyer,” Nastaeva told Britain’s Daily Mail.

“All people close to Oksana – her parents, friends, family – are waiting for a public apology from him,” she said, adding that the sultan should do a DNA test to remove his suspicions.

“Oksana, for her part, is ready for this – I can tell you as I am her closest friend.”

Nastaeva said she was convinced the sultan is the baby’s father due to their resemblance, but said Oksana has not revealed her baby’s face to the public.

“If Oksana had ever shown the face of a child, no one would have any doubts, because father and son share one face,” she told the paper.

Sultan Muhammad V gave up the post of Agong early this year, not long after reports of his marriage to Oksana.

His lawyer Koh, who is based in Singapore, recently confirmed that the couple had divorced after the sultan opted for “triple talaq”, which renders a divorce irrevocable under Muslim marriage laws.

Oksana has denied they had divorced, while the Kelantan palace has never confirmed the authenticity of a copy of the divorce certificate which circulated on social media.

The palace however recently issued a statement seen as a response to Oksana’s Instagram post calling her baby “Tengku Mahkota Kelantan” or crown prince.

“Only official announcements from the Kelantan palace can be accepted as accurate information for the public and media practitioners,” the palace had said.

Meanwhile, Daily Mail quoted Oksana’s lawyer Evgeny Tarlo, who questioned if the Singapore lawyer had been appointed by the former Agong.

He said Koh’s claims on Oksana’s marriage were “lies” and “vulgar stupidity”.

“I do not know who Mr Koh Tien Hua is, and by what right is he commenting on the personal life of Oksana Voevodina,” he said.

The bitter truth about sugar- be wary of sugar in fruit juices and bubble tea

The bitter truth about sugar

ONE MAN'S MEAT

SUGAR is sweet. But the bitter reality is that too much intake of sugar is poisonous to our bodies.

Per day, men, according to the American Heart Association, should not consume more than nine teaspoons of sugar and women should not take six teaspoons.

Going over that limit can lead to health problems such as weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression.

It is easy to go over the limit.

A few years ago, I used to drink Coke for breakfast, lunch and dinner and in between those three meals. I probably got into the habit when I was studying in the United States in the late 1990s.

Let’s just say I drank six cans a day. That’s six times more sugar than what my body could take. This probably led me to being overweight. And people started to use euphemisms on me such as “wah, you look so prosperous”.

Anyway, a few years ago, I stopped drinking Coke. I don’t exactly remember what the trigger was. Perhaps I read the shocking sugar content of a soda drink. Or maybe because the older I got, the less risks I took.

I started to drink more water (usually when I am at home) or if I was in mamak shop, then teh tarik kurang manis.

However, I was still not that strict with my sugar intake as I still drank litres of sweetened fruit juices bought from the supermarket.

These fruit juices are deceptive.

They are labelled “100% pure” and “not from concentrate”. But 350ml of lemonade is 9.8 teaspoons of sugar – the same as a 350ml can of Coke.

I had just replaced a drink with 9.8 teaspoons of sugar with a juice with 9.8 teaspoons of sugar. Both equally addictive.

The other day I went to the clinic because I had pain in my knee. The doctor checked my knees and then asked me a few health-related questions.

She then ordered a blood sugar test. The result was high.

“You better go to the emergency hall now. You have to get yourself admitted to a hospital,” she ordered.

“If you don’t go, you might be in a coma.”

“I’ll go tomorrow morning,” I said.

“You might think that you feel fine now, but you might suddenly collapse,” she said.

“I’ll probably go tomorrow as I got something to do tonight,” I said, as I had to be in the office that night and I had a political column to write.”

“It is your life. But you should go now,” she said.

Finally, three hours later, because I was thinking of my family and death, I went to the emergency room of a private hospital in my Subang Jaya neighbourhood.

I had to wait for two hours to see the doctor. I WhatsApp-ed my friend: “It is 9pm, and I am still waiting to see the doctor. Which I think is good news. As in, if I was really critical, the doctor would have seen me ASAP.”

The doctor examined me and referred me to a specialist. He did not have me hospitalised.

Two days later, the specialist gave me some medicines and told me to stop taking sugar for 40 days.

Yesterday, The Star ran a story quoting Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad as saying that “manufacturers of sugary drinks, including the several dozen bubble tea brands, should ‘self regulate’ by moderating the sweetness of their drinks to protect public health.”

He said the onus is on the beverage makers to reformulate their drinks, especially under the new sugar tax regime.

He noted that according to media reports, bubble tea contains excessive sugar levels.

“From my reading, 100ml of the popular drink has 20 teaspoons of sugar, while the allowed daily intake is only eight teaspoons.

“Consumers need to make informed decisions about what they consume to avoid becoming obese,” Dzulkefly said, adding that Malaysia remains the most obese country

in South-East Asia.

It is a good suggestion by the Health Minister as many consumers might be ignorant of the fact that 100ml of bubble tea contains 20 teaspoons of sugar, which is more than double or triple the recommended daily consumption of sugar per day, according to the American Heart Association.

When I shop at a mall on the weekend, I’m amazed at the long lines at the bubble tea shops.

I wonder whether those lining up know that they are drinking 20 teaspoons of sugar.

Do they know – as the Health Minister said – that our daily sugar intake was “the real culprit” in making us fat?

A Health Ministry study, according to Dzulkefly, found that one in two Malaysians is overweight or obese. And obesity is the leading risk factor for “silent killer” diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Sugar is sweet. But too much of it can – silently and eventually – kill you.
