KUALA LUMPUR, September 30 -- Another new COVID-19 cluster has been detected in Kedah today, with three cases recorded from the Tembok Cluster in Alor Setar, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He said the index case of the new Tembok Cluster (case number 11,207) was also the 135th death case of a local man found to be COVID-29 positive on Sept 28.

Following that, he said close contact screening was carried out and two more positive cases were identified.

“The two positive cases are Malaysians and they have been admitted to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for treatment.

“So far, a total of 169 individuals (connected to the cluster) have been screened, with three positive cases, while 166 individuals are still awaiting their results. Investigations are also underway to determine the source of the infection,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said more cases were reported in four other clusters, namely the Benteng LD Cluster and Bangau-Bangau Cluster in Sabah; Bakawali Cluster in Johor; and Sungai Cluster in Kedah.

Four new cases were reported in the Benteng LD Cluster (total 879); nine cases in the Bangau-Bangau Cluster (total 287); seven cases in the Bakawali Cluster (total 11); and one case in the Sungai Cluster (total 100).

In the meantime, the MV Glen Cluster in Klang, Selangor, which had three positive cases, was declared ended today.

The three cases involved two Malaysians and a foreigner, but no deaths were recorded.

As of today, there are still 24 active clusters nationwide, with 100 clusters having been declared over.

Meanwhile, following the spike in COVID-19 cases in Sabah, Dr Noor Hisham said a health assistance team had been deployed to Tawau, Lahad Datu, Semporna and Kunak in stages to assist in the process of contact tracing, community screening as well as to help man the quarantine centres and hospitals.

“A total of 10 microbiological science officers and five laboratory technologists have been sent to the Tawau Hospital, Lahad Datu Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Likas Women and Children’s Hospital and Kota Kinabalu Public Health Laboratory to assist with COVID-19 screening process in laboratories.

“A total of 72 trained nurses have been deployed to the Kunak Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Tenom Hospital, Beluran Hospital, Keningau Hospital, Likas Women and Children’s Hospital and Kota Belud Hospital,” he said.

He said that in October, a total of 140 medical officers and 225 assistant medical officers would be stationed at the Sabah State Health Department, including clinics, hospitals and area health offices throughout the state, in accordance with vacancies and existing needs.

He explained that at the same time, the welfare of health and medical workers would be given priority to ensure the Ministry of Health’s main assets would be able to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities, including from the logistic and training aspects as well as in terms of their need for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 -- A senior citizen claimed to have suffered RM444,934 in losses after being duped by a Macau Scam syndicate.

Petaling Jaya District Police Chief ACP Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the 79-year-old female victim had received a call allegedly from the Poslaju Malaysia Headquarters saying there was a package sent to Sabah containing an identity card and bank card in the victim's name.

"On July 5, the victim received a WhatsApp message from a man named Chong who said the victim had received a sum of RM148,000 which was put into his account from Chang Poon Siew.

"The victim was then connected to the Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) and spoke to an individual known as Inspector Zaki, who accused her of committing an offence and would arrest her for further investigation," he said in a statement today.

He said out of fear of the threat, the victim followed all the suspect's instructions by transferring her savings to the account given by the suspect supposedly for police investigation.

"The first transaction on Aug 6 amounted to RM29,934 while the second and third transactions were done on Aug 17 and 24, where the victim deposited two checks worth RM100,000 and RM315,000 into the account of the second suspect," he said.

Nik Ezanee said on Sept 29 (yesterday) while at the bank the victim was asked by the bank officer the reason for transferring a large sum of money, the victim began to narrate the incident and the officer told her she had been duped.

The victim later lodged a police report on the same day and the case was investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years with whipping and fine.

RAUB, September 30 -- The Immigration Department detained 110 illegal immigrants in raids on three factories and 11 durian plantations around the Raub area.

Immigration director-general Datuk Khairul Dzaimee Daud said in the raids carried out in four series of operations from Aug 13 to date, Indonesians made up the highest number of detainees with 94 people, followed by Myanmar nationals (eight) Bangladeshis (four) and Pakistanis (four).

"Most of them do not have travel documents and have abused the Social Visit Pass issued to tourists,” he told reporters after participating in the operation codenamed ‘Ops Durian’, carried out by more than 25 personnel from the department in Sungai Ruan here today.

He said among the challenges faced during the operation were the large sizes of the estates, besides the fact estate operators kept guard dogs to protect their areas.

KUALA LUMPUR, September 30 -- The High Court here today set Oct 28 to hear the application by the wife and four children of former Tabung Haji (TH) chairman, Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim to stay the government’s suit to forfeit almost RM16 million from their accounts.

Judge Datuk Muhammad Jamil Hussin fixed the date after counsel representing the family, Mohd Rifahmi Abdul Musikin asked for a postponement of the stay application hearing as the main counsel in the case, M. Athimulan was still at the Palace of Justice for another case.

Deputy public prosecutor Nik Haslinie Hashim said the prosecution had no objection to the postponement.

The family is seeking for the forfeiture proceeding to be stayed pending the disposal of Abdul Azeez’s ongoing corruption trial at the Sessions Court, here.

Based on the cause list on the e-filing website, the government had initiated the proceeding to forfeit the money from the TH personal accounts of Abdul Azeez’s wife, Khadijah Mohd Noor and their four children, Mohamed Khairul Anwar, Mohamed Khairul Azman, Khaleeda Azwav and Khaleeda Azeera, and the account of a company belonging to them, Azeera Management Consultants (M) Sdn Bhd.

The prosecution’s forfeiture suit against Abdul Azeez’s family was filed in September last year, while the family filed the stay bid in January this year.

KUALA LUMPUR, September 30 -- All COVID-19 tests conducted on those identified as close contacts of the Babel fitness gym member tested positive, have returned negative.

Suria KLCC management in a statement today said extensive contact tracing exercise was conducted immediately upon being alerted of the COVID-19 case involving a member of Babel.

According to the statement, to understand the course of events better and for clarity, the footprints of the affected member in Babel Suria KLCC took place on four separate occasions (morning off-peak session) between Sept 9, 10, 11 and 13, 2020.

“As an immediate action to ensure the safety of everyone, Suria KLCC had conducted thorough sanitisation and disinfection exercise of the entire mall, especially at the common areas. These include regular cleaning of items that have more frequent points of contact,” it said.

Meanwhile, the statement said Suria KLCC does not anticipate any impact to the mall’s business as the case is well-contained and business operations will continue as usual.

“We advise members of the public not speculate and/or spread unfounded rumours. During this time, the best measure is to act responsibly and remain calm while obtaining valid information from official sources,” it said.
