PUTRAJAYA, September 27 -- Malaysia has been elected to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the 2020-2022 term as a representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific.

Wisma Putra said the decision was reached during the 64th regular session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria last Thursday (Sept 24).

"Malaysia has served on the Board of Governors for nine terms since 1976.

"As a member of the Board, Malaysia is fully committed and will continue to support and work with the IAEA and Member States to ensure the potential of nuclear energy is utilised for peaceful purposes," it said in a statement issued today.

The IAEA General Conference, which convenes annually, is attended by high-ranking officials and representatives from IAEA Member States and serves as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology and nuclear power worldwide.
