TOKYO (Bernama): The Malaysian government wants strong evidence to show that Russia is responsible for the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 tragedy in 2014, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"They are accusing Russia, but where is the evidence?

"We know the missile that brought down the plane is a Russian-type missile, but it could also be made in Ukraine.

"You need strong evidence to show it was fired by the Russians.

Dr Mahathir said Malaysia accepted the investigation report by Holland but only up the point where the plane was brought down by a missile made by Russia.

He said while the government agreed that the plane was brought down by a Russian missile, it could not be ascertained that the missile was launched by Russia.

The Russians were a military people and they would know that MH17 was a passenger plane, he added.

"I don’t think very highly disciplined party is responsible for launching the missile,” he said.

The Prime Minister said Malaysia should also have been involved in the examining the black box as the plane belonged to Malaysia and there were Malaysians passengers.

"We may not have the expertise, but we can buy the expertise. For some reasons, Malaysia was not allowed to check the black box to see what happened.

"We don’t know why we were excluded from the examination but from the very beginning, we see too much politics in it, and the idea was not to find out how this happened but seemed to be concentrated on trying to pin it on the Russians.

"This is not a neutral kind of examination,” said Dr Mahathir.

Had a neutral party examined and made the conclusion, Malaysia would be willing to accept the findings but here we have parties with political interests in the matter, he added.

Flight MH17, which departed from Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam on its way to Kuala Lumpur, was shot before crashing near Torez in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, about 40km from the Russian border on July 17, 2014.

The incident killed 298 people, including 15 crew members.

Dutch-led Joint Investigation Team (JIT) said the team was convinced that a BUK TELAR missile was used to down MH17, and that it originated from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade (53rd Brigade), which is a unit of the Russian Army in Kursk in the Russian Federation. – Bernama

Gloomy Raya: Windscreen-smashing biker gets 12 months in the slammer

Friday, 31 May 20193:07 PM MYT

SHAH ALAM: A motorcyclist will be spending this Hari Raya in jail after the Magistrate's Court here sentenced him to 12 months in prison for smashing the windscreen of a car recently.

Magistrate Nurshahira Abdul Salim meted out the sentence against Danial Tan Abdullah after he pleaded guilty on Friday (May 31) to the offence of causing mischief.

The 31-year-old store assistant was charged with causing mischief towards a Perodua Alza belonging to Siew Chean Voon, 58, by smashing the windscreen with a crash helmet on Jalan Kasturi, Seksyen 12, Taman Bukit Serdang at 5.30pm on Tuesday (May 28).

The charge was read under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both, if convicted.

“However, he flipped the finger at me,” he said.

Danial told the court he was remorseful over his action.

During mitigation, his counsel Nur Rafiuddin Naswari pleaded for a fine rather than imprisonment as his client was the sole breadwinner of the family.

She added that it was her client's first offence, and it was a spontaneous one.

Nur Rafiuddin added that Danial had been criticised by the public when his identification card, work address and home address when were shared on social media.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Hairuliqram Hairuddin called for a stern sentence as that would serve as a lesson to both the accused and the public, as road rage cases happened frequently.

Dashcam footage taken of the incident went viral on social media after the incident, prompting many to condemn the incident and ask for justice to be served.

The suspect was apprehended by the police in Balakong on Thursday (May 30). - Sinar Harian

Felda settlers to get RM300 'duit raya'

PETALING JAYA: All Felda settlers will get a special Hari Raya assistance of RM300, as well as arrears due to them, before the festival, says a circular from the Economic Affairs Ministry.

A leaked circular dated May 30 stated that the Cabinet had agreed to give the duit raya to 112,635 settlers.

The circular was confirmed to be true by sources and is expected to be announced Friday (May 31).

The special Hari Raya Aidilfitri assistance will be RM300 per settler, according to the circular.

"The Economic Affairs Minister proposes that Felda makes the payment as soon as possible before Hari Raya Aidilfitri to lessen their burden to celebrate the festival this year," said the circular signed by Datuk Yatimah Sarjiman from the Prime Minister's Department on behalf of the secretary general of the Economic Affairs Ministry.

Prior to this on May 23, Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali had said the government did not intend to give “duit raya” to Felda settlers throughout the country.

He said this was because the country’s financial situation did not permit it to do so.

He then said that instead the government was giving priority to providing cost of living and advance on produce aids for the settlers before Hari Raya.

However, following that, there were calls from NGOs on behalf of Felda settlers, as well as PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, for the government to rethink the decision not to give "duit raya".

PUTRAJAYA: Former defence ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein are expected to be called in by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) after Hari Raya for questioning over land swap deals involving the Defence Ministry (Mindef).

It is learnt that investigators, who had received the remainder of 16 reports about two weeks ago, want some time to study the cases.

MACC sources said the investigation would commence after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities and other individuals, besides Ahmad Zahid and Hishammuddin, would be called in for questioning.

"The officers are still going through the documents and Hari Raya is next week. Let's wait after that before we begin investigations," a source told The Star.

"Anyone who can help us in the probe can and will be called," added the source.

Najib, the former prime minister, and Ahmad Zahid had earlier said that they were ready to be investigated.

On May 17, Mindef handed over 14 reports pertaining to the alleged dubious land swap, after surrendering two reports earlier.

The reports were findings of the Governance, Procurement and Finance Investigating Committee which investigated 16 deals involving 1,183ha of land belonging to the Mindef.

Besides the land value, the cost of the projects was estimated at RM4.88bil.

Findings on one of the audit reports stated that a former prime minister and former defence ministers were found to be clearly involved in the land swap deal for the development of the Muara Tuang and Penrissen camps in Sarawak.

Najib was prime minister while Ahmad Zahid was defence minister then.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Want to avoid the ‘balik kampung’ rush in an exciting way?

Over 20 helicopters are made available for service to offer the wealthy a luxurious balik kampung ride during Hari Raya festive season.

Sinar Harian reported that the “balik kampung” helicopter hire service was first introduced by the management company Hazmi Dimasyq Group.

According to the group owner Hazmi Hanipa, the helicopter and private jet services were introduced for the past three years, which was usually the choice of businessmen.

“This is the first year we decided to offer the service in conjunction with Hari Raya,” he added.

“So far, we have 11 requests for the Kuala Lumpur-Kota Baru route, which has the highest demand.”

Hazmi said the first flight would be on June 3 and the flight charge to Kelantan is about RM30,000 for one-way.

“We provide over 20 helicopters this season while regular day flights involve only six,” he added.

For a six-passenger flight, it would cost RM17,000 per hour.

By helicopter, the journey from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Baru takes about three hours.

“Alhamdulillah, looking at the requests, we will continue this service for the next festive seasons,” he said.

Notice published for relevant parties to claim seized assets linked to Najib

Notice published for relevant parties to claim seized assets linked to Najib

Thursday, 30 May 20199:49 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): The High Court here has allowed the prosecution to publish a notice in the Gazette calling upon any third party with interest on the assets seized from Datuk Seri Najib Razak, his family and others linked to the former prime minister.

Hundreds of bags of various brands and other property, including cash in various currencies, watches and 27 cars were seized from Najib, his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, their three children and 13 other individuals and companies.

Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan made the decision after allowing the prosecution's application under Section 56 and 61(2) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

"The court gives three months for the prosecution, as the applicant, to implement the process (of publishing the notice in the Gazette).

"As such, the court sets this Aug 30 for case management," he said during Thursday's (May 30) case management.

Upon publication of the notice in the Gazette, any third party who claims to have any interest in the property will be required to attend before the court, or through their lawyer, on a specified date to show cause as to why the property should not be forfeited.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Fatnin Yusof informed the court that the 16th to 18th respondents, namely Kee Kok Thiam, Tan Vern Tact and Geh Choh Hun, had fled, making it impossible for the prosecution to hand over the cause papers to them.

"Therefore, the prosecution applied to publish the notice in the Gazette under Section 56 and 61(2) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001," he added.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Saifuddin Hashim Musaimi, when met by reporters, said the prosecution needed time to publish the notice in the Gazette.

Last May 7, the Attorney General's Chambers filed a notice of forfeiture over hundreds of items including branded handbags and 27 vehicles seized from Najib, Rosmah Mansor, their three children and 13 individuals and companies.

The notice was filed at the Criminal High Court Registrar's Office, here, and named the prosecution as the applicant with 18 individuals and companies as the respondents.

The respondents named are Najib, followed by Rosmah, Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz, Nor Ashman Razak Mohd Najib, Nooryana Najwa Mohd Najib, Mohd Kyizzad Mesran, Senijauhar Sdn Bhd, Aiman Ruslan, Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia, Yayasan Semesta,Yayasan Mustika Kasih, Rembulan Kembara Sdn Bhd, Goh Gaik Ewe, Ng Chong Hwa, Lim Hwee Bin, Kee Kok Thiam, Tan Vern Tact and Geh Choh Hun as second to 18th respondents.

The application was filed on the grounds that the prosecution, acting under Section 56(1) read together with Section 376 of the Criminal Procedure Code, was satisfied that the items seized between May 17, 2018 and March 11, 2019, were related to an offence under Section 4(1) or as the result of illegal activities involving the respondents.

Among the valuables were 52 branded handbags, 10 watches and cash in different denominations which were seized on May 17 and June 11, 2018.

Also seized were four branded watches, 171 branded handbags and 27 pairs of expensive shoes while 40 luxury handbags were confiscated on June 11 last year.

Twenty-seven Nissan Urvan vehicles were seized on Aug 2, 2018.

In addition, money amounting to more than RM18mil in several accounts at different banks was frozen between Aug 16, 2018 and March 11, 2019.

Also seized was a property in Tanjong Bungah, Penang, belonging to the 13th respondent on Jan 17 this year.

The prosecution also filed a similar motion against Obyu Holding Sdn Bhd as the sole respondent.

Among items seized on May 17, 2018, include 11,990 pieces of jewellery, 401 watches, 16 pieces of watch accessories, 234 pairs of eyewear and 306 handbags while cash amounting to RM114,164,393.44 in various denominations was confiscated on Jan 31, 2019 .

A property in Kuala Lumpur district was also seized on Nov 1, 2018. – Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Three suspected Islamic State (IS) militants have been detained following anti-terror swoops in three states, says Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador.

The Inspector-General of Police said the three men - a local, an Indonesian and a Bangladeshi - were nabbed by the Counter Terrorism Division (E8) between May 17 and 30 in Selangor, Kedah and Sabah.

"He does not recognise the Malaysian government and any religious organisations," he said, adding that the suspect believed that any Muslims who took part in the nation's elections could be killed as well."

The country's top cop said the next arrest was a 20-year-old Indonesian man, who is believed to have been a facilitator for Indonesian IS militants, who transited in Sabah before heading to southern Philippines to launch suicide bombings.

"The suspect was arrested in Keningau, Sabah, on May 26. He was a labourer and had performed the bai'ah to Abu Bakar as well.

"He has also channelled funds to the Maute terror group in southern Philippines and he was planning to head to Syria soon," Abdul Hamid said.

The last arrest was a 28-year-old Bangladeshi in Kuala Kedah, on May 30.

"He was working as an assistant mechanic on a ship.

"He also possessed the necessary chemicals and expertise to produce Improvised Explosive Devices (IED)," Abdul Hamid said.

He said the E8 is also looking for another Indonesian suspect, identified as Marwan, who escaped during the raid in Keningau on May 26.

"The suspect is in his 30s and his last known address is at Kampung Keritan Laut in Keningau," he said.

The IGP urged anyone with information to contact E8 investigating officer Insp Mohd Razizuan Mohd Razali at 017-3278435 or any nearest police station.

"Stern action will be taken against anyone who harbours this fugitive," he said.

TOKYO: Malaysia is proposing a new currency based on gold as it is more stable as opposed to the current currency trading which is manipulative, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said by using the precious metal, it could be used to evaluate the exports and imports activities among the East Asian countries.

"We can make settlement using that (new) currency (using gold). That currency must relate to the local currency as to the exchange rate and that is something that can be related to the performance of that country.

"That way we know how much we owe, how much we have to pay in the special currency of East Asia,” he said during a dialogue session at the 25th International Conference on The Future of Asia (Nikkei Conference) here, today.

PETALING JAYA, May 29 — Neelofa a diva?

According to the owner of a party store, the actress and TV is just that, unprofessional and with bad attitude to spare.

In a lengthy Facebook post uploaded earlier today that has since gone viral, the founder of Glowing Party House, Masviona Muhamad said the incident stemmed from the sponsorship of the chain supply party shop and balloon supplier for the MeleTop TV show which Neelofa co-hosts with Nabil Ahmad.

“Having worked with the production previously five or six times before, it was agreed we were to sponsor the balloon decor for an episode where they were celebrating a million Youtube subscribers on the show’s channel.”

Saying there had never been any negative incidents before, Neelofa’s entry into set this time was a painful experience.

“She entered the studio at 6.40pm, and upon seeing the decor, asked if it was for only the first segment or the entirety of the show.

“When she was told it would stay to the end, she insisted it be used only for the first segment, or a rearrangement of the decor had to be done as she did not want the balloons behind her, or at all in the programme if possible.”

Feeling slighted, Masviona said the hurtful remarks reflected Neelofa’s “bad attitude and no manners at all” since the sponsors were still in the midst of the final set-up.

However she said they complied with production’s request and switched the arrangement of the balloons to appease her, which obviously failed as she alleged Neelofa started pushing aside the balloons and moving the decor around midway through, visibly uneasy with the work of the company’s “master balloon artist”.

“If that wasn’t enough, she also asked the production crew to move the balloons while she was throwing aside the ones near her which made things look chaotic and worse than ever.

“It’s an insult to our art. Does she know out master balloon artist is a certified balloon artist that has spent effort, time and money to learn the art in Singapore, Australia and the United States?”

Complimenting co-host Nabil Ahmad for being the total opposite, she also said Neelofa even failed in her task to mention the sponsor appropriate when she called Glowing Party House — Glowing House Party.

Feeling the heat from Neelofa’s fans after the post went viral, Masviona uploaded another just two hours ago claiming it was within her rights as a sponsor to have expectations.

Maybe Neelofa just has globophobia — a fear of balloons?

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 29 — A hostel warden was sentenced to jail for 133 years and 42 strokes of caning for sodomising two students and molesting another three at a tahfiz school at Simpang Empat in Kangar.

Sinar Harian reported Nawawi Anuar, 28, pleaded guilty to 26 counts of sodomising, molesting, and sexually harassing his victims, aged from nine to 15 years at Maahad Tahfiz al Quran Ar Raudhah Bohor Mali in April, in front of Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrim Mohamad.

However, Nawawi, who hails from Bandar Baharu Kedah, pleaded not guilty to three other charges of sodomy which included showing a pornographic film from his mobile phone to one of his victims aged 11.

Nawawi was charged according to Seksyen 377B and 377C of the Penal Code, as well as Section 15(e) and 16(1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act of 2017, and Section 5(1)(a) of the Film Censorship Act 2002.

Proceedings were conducted by deputy public prosecutors Mohd Izham Ali, Nor Shuhada Mohd Yatim, and Mohd Farhan Aliff Ahmad.

Nawawi was represented by lawyers from the Perlis branch of the National Legal Aid Foundation.

Nawawi was apprehended on May 11 after he fled to Ipoh, once he realised a police report had been made against him on Thursday May 9.

The report against Nawawi was made by a staff of the tahfiz school at the Simpang Empat police station.

The incidents were uncovered after one of the sodomy victims, aged 15, stepped forward to lodge a complaint on April 24, claiming he was sodomised and forced to perform sexual acts in the warden’s room.

The victim also claimed that Nawawi had threatened to hit him if the incidents were reported.

The Court set July 9 for rementioning of the case and also to hand over documents for trial for the charges Nawawi pleaded not guilty.

The nominated MPs include Setiawangsa’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad who will sit on the Education committee, Bukit Bintang’s Fong Kui Lin on Tourism, Arts and Culture, and Wangsa Maju’s Datin Paduka Tan Yee Kew for Health and Women’s Affairs.

KUALA LUMPUR, 29 — The civil servants’ pension fund KWAP would have preferred to receive a government guarantee for its second RM2 billion loan to SRC International Sdn Bhd before releasing the funds in 2012, but had transferred the money first due to the Finance Ministry’s assurance, the High Court heard today.

Former KWAP CEO Datuk Azian Mohd Noh, 66, was asked if there was nothing wrong with releasing the RM2 billion to SRC International Sdn Bhd before the actual letter of government guarantee reached KWAP.

“No, it would have been ideal if we got the guarantee documents, but we disbursed the loan.

“We disbursed, as I said earlier, based on assurance from a Ministry of Finance officer,” she said on the 20th day of former prime minister and former finance minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s trial.

KWAP had on March 23, 2012 offered a second loan of RM2 billion to SRC International with the condition that it was backed by a government guarantee, and with the loan agreement signed on March 27, 2012.

But in a March 28, 2012 letter to KWAP, the Finance Ministry said the Malaysian government had via a Cabinet decision in February 2012 agreed to guarantee SRC International’s RM2 billion loan, further asking KWAP to consider releasing the funds first while the government undertakes to hand over the government guarantee within 10 working days.

The funds were released, while the government guarantee dated March 27, 2012 and signed off by Najib was later received by KWAP.

Also during cross-examination, Azian was asked whether she had any doubt that the government guarantee would reach within 10 days.

She replied that she had to “rely” on the March 28, 2012 letter by the Finance Ministry, and that she trusted that it came from a “responsible” officer of the Finance Ministry.

“We agreed to disburse the loan based on the surat perakuan (letter of undertaking) by a Finance Ministry officer, and the letter stated that the Cabinet had approved that guarantee,” she later said.

When asked by Najib’s lawyer Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden if this situation — of KWAP releasing money to a borrower in a government-guaranteed loan before the guarantee letter reached — has happened before, Azian replied: “Not during my career in KWAP.”

Azian was Retirement Fund Incorporated’s (KWAP) CEO from March 2007 to March 2013, but had also served there during 1991-1992 and 1995-1997 before it was incorporated.

Azian is the 38th prosecution witness of Najib’s ongoing trial involving seven charges of abuse of position, criminal breach of trust and money-laundering over RM42 million of SRC International’s funds.

During the course of the trial, witnesses have testified that KWAP gave a total of RM4 billion in loans in 2011 and 2012 to SRC International, with money allegedly flowing through other companies before being transferred into Najib’s accounts.

The trial before High Court judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali will resume on June 10, with Azian expected to continue testifying.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Two high-end condominiums in New York City allegedly bought with money stolen from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) by Penang-born fugitive Low Taek Jho are now for sale, Bloomberg reported today.

The business newswire reported that both lawyers for the wanted Malaysian popularly known as Jho Low and the US government had asked a federal court in Los Angeles to let them list the two properties for sale as part of the US forfeiture lawsuits over 1MDB.

The two New York properties were reported to be a Time Warner penthouse at 80 Columbus Circle that Low is said to have got in 2011 for US$31 million and another condo unit on 118 Greene Street he allegedly bought three years later for US$14 million.

Bloomberg said the proceeds from the sale of the two condo units have not been settled as Low continues to fight the forfeiture lawsuits.

Bloomberg also reported that both Low’s lawyers and US federal prosecutors are seeking to dispose another property in Los Angeles he also got for US$39 because the upkeep of the vacant mansion has become too pricey.

“Mr. Low is aware of two further successfully negotiated agreements with the US government.

“The owners of both the Greene Street property and the 80 Columbus Circle property have reached favourable agreements with the DOJ to initiate a sale of the properties,” a spokesman for Low said in an emailed statement through his US lawyers to media worldwide.

The DOJ stands for the US Department of Justice.

Low’s representative added that this ongoing collaboration is crucial in order to protect the value of the assets and the legal rights of the parties concerned.

He also took another swipe at the Malaysian government, describing similar recent moves to dispose of things said to be bought by Low with money stolen from the sovereign investment fund as “autocratic” and “illegal”.

Malaysia’s Attorney-General announced the sale of the super yacht once known as The Equanimity and said to have been bought by Low on April 3 for US$126 million to Genting Malaysia Berhad.

The ship has since been renamed The Tranquility and taken to Singapore

Cricket legend turned Pakistan Prime Minister, Imran Khan has stepped in with financial assistance to ensure that 315 of his countrymen will make it back home in time for the Hari Raya holidays after worries that they would be unable to afford travel back.

According to reports in Gulf News, RM1.3 million (US$310,000) in aid via the Foreign Office and zakat (Islamic charitable donations) fund will be used to help pay for the cost of airfare for the hundreds of detainees currently in Malaysian detention.

“The government will bear all the expenses to be incurred on their repatriation,” Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Sayed Zulfikar Abbas Bukhari told media last week.

“Thanks to the Almighty, 315 Pakistani prisoners, who could not afford to buy air tickets, will be spending Eid-Al-Fitr (Hari Raya) with their families in Pakistan,” he said.

Politicians were quick to say that it was PM Khan’s call for swift action in the matter that brought about the happy ending.

A Boeing 777 from Pakistan International Airlines is expected to bring the detainees home, with a deal having been brokered between Islamabad and the country’s national flag carrier at a favorable rate after negotiations from the PM’s office.

Senior officials in the country’s Overseas Ministry have said that they have asked their Kuala Lumpur counterparts for legal relief for their countrymen going through the Malaysian court system, as part of a bigger policy to “bring back” Pakistanis who are stuck in foreign jails.

PETALING JAYA, May 29 —A Chinese Grab driver’s kind gesture towards a fasting Muslim passenger has gone viral  on social media.

What started out as a casual conversation between Wong Zhen Wei and Nur Aqilah Syazwina Mustaffa on the journey back to her house turned into a spontaneous bazaar trip when they realised it was almost time to break fast.

The duo stopped by a nearby bazaar where Wong footed the bill for several items, including ayam percik, mango shake, and different types of kuih, mStar reported.

“He insisted on paying for all the food that I bought. I did not spend a single cent!

“And when he dropped me off at the house, I did offer him to eat with my family together but he refused, although he jokingly said he wanted to eat together beforehand,” Syazwina wrote on Twitter.

Social media users were especially impressed at how Wong had spent nearly as much on the food (RM22) as Syazwina had paid for the Grab fare (RM24).

“Upon arrival, he gave all the food that he bought at the bazaar to me,” she wrote.

“The fact that a Chinese guy was willing to park the car and walk quite a distance with me just to get me some food for breaking of fast touched me.”

Syazwina also wished Wong all the best in his work and urged those in the Batu Pahat area in Johor to give him a five-star rating if they got him as a driver.

Malaysians expressed admiration for Wong’s kind gesture, which Twitter user TilaLulaLilaLol said was an “unexpected blessing”.

“Malaysia needs more people like this,” said superduperris.

“A nice story about a Grab driver. This world is truly peaceful,” said amarul_aman.
