PETALING JAYA: The presence of counsel Syazlin Mansor at the inquest into the death of Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim is not needed, says Zuraida Kamaruddin.

The Housing and Local Government Minister said that Syazlin's presence in the inquest was "redundant".

"We have come to realise that the Attorney General is representing the government - (and) that would include both the Ministry and Fire and Rescue Department - and therefore Syazlin’s role in representing both has become redundant.

"So she has to withdraw herself," said Zuraida in a statement on Monday (May 27) after Syazlin withdrew from the inquest.

The counsel kept mum when asked by reporters on the reason for her withdrawal from the inquest.

"I don't want to comment, ask the Minister (Zuraida Kamaruddin)," she told reporters.

Judge Rofiah Mohamad who sits as the coroner set June 26 for mention of the inquest.

Rofiah said this would give ample time for a new counsel to represent the Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department, both interested parties in the inquest.

Muhammad Adib, 24, became critically injured in the early morning of Nov 27 after he and his team members from the Subang Jaya fire station responded to an emergency call at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple where a riot was taking place.

The fireman was taken to SJMC after he was found injured, before being transferred to the National Heart Institute (IJN) for further treatment, where he later died on Dec 17, at 9.41pm.
