Five policemen facing internal action for allegedly involved in robbing foreign national

BERNAMA

26-04- 2024 12:45 PM

KUALA LUMPUR: Five policemen, who are among seven individuals detained on suspicion of involvement in a robbery of a foreign national involving a sum of RM260,000, are facing internal disciplinary action including possible transfer.

Kuala Lumpur Police Chief, Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, said the action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation conducted and the decision by the deputy public prosecutor (DPP).

“These policemen are still in service but are currently inactive. We await the decision of the DPP,” he said after attending the monthly assembly of the Kuala Lumpur Police at the Kuala Lumpur Police Contingent Headquarters today.

Rusdi said that some of the suspects detained would be requested to play a role as witnesses to the case and assist in tracking down another suspect who is still at large.

On April 7, seven individuals, including five policemen, were apprehended on suspicion of robbing a foreign man at a residence in Jalan Tun Razak, resulting in a loss of RM260,000.

On another development, Rusdi said that the Kuala Lumpur Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) has seized various types of drugs between January and March this year, amounting to RM10.1 million, compared to RM39.7 million in the corresponding period last year.

“During the same period this year, 5,977 individuals were arrested, which is a significant increase from 3,576 individuals arrested in the same period last year,” he said.

Furthermore, Rusdi said online fraud and scam cases, which had been rampant globally, have also contributed to the increase in crime rates in Kuala Lumpur.

He said the Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) had conducted a total of 996 raids for the period from January to March 2024.

“For Call Centre Crimes, CCID has successfully initiated 16 investigation papers involving the arrest of 180 individuals,” he said.

Rusdi added that the Kuala Lumpur Special Branch had been investigating syndicates smuggling untaxed cigarettes and arrested two foreign nationals and confiscated untaxed cigarettes estimated to be worth RM66,205.92 during the same period.

'Taylor Swift Act' and other efforts target sky-high concert ticket prices

LOS ANGELES: The Taylor Swift concert ticket debacle two years ago is leading state and federal lawmakers to take aim at sales practices that they say are deceptive or predatory to music fans.

A main goal of venues and musicians is to outlaw speculative sales when a seller offers a ticket they do not yet have. In some cases, they ask thousands of dollars for a ticket that they can buy later from the primary seller for $200 or less and reap the profit.

In Maryland, a new law will make speculative ticket sales illegal starting July 1.

"This is a huge first step," said Audrey Fix Schaefer, communications director for I.M.P., the company that operates Maryland's Merriweather Post Pavilion and other venues that often receive complaints if consumers pay high prices or fail to receive promised tickets.

Arizona recently cleared similar legislation and nicknamed the measure the "Taylor Swift Act." When fans were unable to snag Eras Tour tickets through Ticketmaster, many paid thousands to buy them through resellers, also known as secondary sellers, or were tricked by sites selling fake tickets.

Swift has not commented on the ticketing proposals, and a representative for the singer did not respond to a request for comment.

Nationwide, bills have been introduced in two dozen states to address event ticketing practices, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

In Illinois, a ban on speculative tickets has passed the state Senate. The Colorado House has cleared legislation to require more pricing transparency and a ban on websites designed to mimic legitimate ticket sales sites, which may trick consumers into thinking they are buying directly from a venue.

At the same time, venues and the world's biggest musicians are pushing for federal reforms.

Companies including Ticketmaster and SeatGeek committed to greater transparency, known as "all-in" or "upfront" pricing of a ticket's cost with fees from the beginning, at a White House event last summer with President Joe Biden, part of his effort to crack down on what he called "junk fees" imposed by ticket companies, banks, airlines and others.

"There's more to do to address the problem of online ticketing," Biden said at the time.

ARTISTS BACK FEDERAL BILL

On Thursday, 250 artists including Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell, Green Day and Fall Out Boy voiced support for the Fans First Act, a bill pending in the U.S. Senate. No votes on the measure have been scheduled.

The legislation would prevent speculative ticket sales when a seller does not have a ticket. It also would require "all-in" pricing, outlaw deceptive websites and strengthen enforcement of penalties for bot usage to scoop up tickets.

"We are joining together to say that the current system is broken," the artists said in a letter to congressional sponsors of the legislation. "Predatory resellers and secondary platforms engage in deceptive ticketing practices to inflate ticket prices and deprive fans of the chance to see their favorite artists at a fair price."

So-called spec tickets often are advertised with warnings such as "only 4 left!," falsely suggesting to consumers that they should buy immediately or miss out. In some cases, actual tickets never turn up or brokers send fraudulent tickets.

Ticket-selling platforms said they supported some of the proposed legislative changes.

Ticketmaster, a unit of Live Nation Entertainment that sells primary and secondary tickets, said it backed bans on speculative sales and deceptive websites, as well as better enforcement of anti-bot legislation.

StubHub "does not allow the sale of speculative tickets, and sellers found to be in breach of our seller policy face consequences such as fines and removal from the platform," a company spokesperson said. If a buyer has an issue, "StubHub will find an equivalent or better ticket to get a buyer into an event, or provide a full refund."

The company said it supports U.S. House and Senate versions of a bill called the Ticket Act. The House version would outlaw speculative ticketing, among other practices, while the Senate measure calls for all-in pricing.

Venues and artist groups have formed a coalition called Fix the Tix, led by the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), that is pushing for passage of the Fans First Act, which they say offers the strongest protections for ticket buyers.

Stephen Parker, executive director of NIVA, said that bill is "the most fan- and artist-friendly ticketing legislation that Congress has ever introduced."

"It makes illegal the abusive, predatory behaviour from predatory resale platforms and ticket brokers," he said, and also calls for a national evaluation of the ticket resale market.

AirAsia Group to be listed on Bursa Malaysia in September

AirAsia Group Sdn Bhd (AAG) will be listed on Bursa Malaysia in September, taking over the listing status of AirAsia X Bhd, said Capital A Bhd Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.

He said AAG is a combined airline under AirAsia Aviation Group Ltd (AAAGL), consisting of AirAsia subsidiaries in Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and soon in Cambodia, together with AirAsia Bhd (AAB) which handles operations in Malaysia.

"The merger is to coordinate operations with the aim of becoming the largest low-cost airline in Asia with the 'One Airline' strategy to change the face of global low-cost travel," he said during the signing ceremony of the conditional share sale and purchase agreement between Capital A and AAG, today this.

Fernandes said he believed the move would pave the way for Capital A to exit PN17 status following the divestment of its wholly-owned subsidiaries - AAAGL and AAB.

"So the first thing is to prepare the circular for this deal which I hope can be done within two weeks. Then we need to submit it to Bursa Malaysia to get approval which I hope can be done immediately.

"After that we have 21 days to call an extraordinary general meeting from both companies to approve this deal. So when it is completed later, we need to get the cost to approve it for capital reduction, then only then can we be listed," he said.

After the sale, he said, Capital A will retain its four core businesses including Capital A Aviation Services, Teleport, MOVE Digital and Capital A International.

Fernandes said AirAsia Group will optimize their profitability with efficient aircraft models, with the company adding A320s and reducing A330s to the A321 Neo.

Yesterday, Capital A announced to the stock exchange that it had entered into a conditional share purchase agreement with AAG to dispose of 100 percent of its equity interests in AAAGL and AAB at a price of RM6.8 billion.

Capital A also announced the proposed distribution of new ordinary shares in AAG to be accepted as consideration shares for the proposed disposal of AAAGL of RM2.20 billion to eligible shareholders of the group

Former PM Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi (Pak Lah), was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) last night

Former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) last night, after reportedly experiencing the health problem 'small spontaneous pneumothorax'.

The health development of Tun Abdullah or more affectionately called Pak Lah was shared by his former press secretary, Izad Raya, via his social page after receiving information from his closest family.

"Currently, Tun Abdullah is in a stable condition and is still being treated at the Coronary Care Unit for monitoring.

"Thank God, he is in good condition, but needs sufficient rest.

"The family really appreciates the prayers and words of encouragement entrusted to Tun Abdullah but the IJN advises him not to accept visitors at this time," according to a statement confirmed by his family members.

Based on the search for 'small spontaneous pneumothorax', this problem results in the collection of air or gas in the cavity between the lungs and the chest wall due to a leak between the chest frame and the lungs (pleural space) or the lungs themselves. This will cause the lungs to become constricted.

Meanwhile, his son-in-law, Khairy Jamaluddin, also confirmed the matter which was shared on his social page.

Khairy confirmed that his father-in-law was in stable condition at the IJN Coronary Treatment Unit (CCU) for  monitoring.

Khairy said that his father-in-law needed adequate rest and was advised not to accept visitors at this time

Previously, Khairy also revealed about the dementia suffered by Pak Lah, where he began to show signs of cognitive impairment since 2009 after retiring from the position of Prime Minister.

Two helicopters crashed following a mid-air collision over the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) base in Lumut, Perak yesterday morning, claiming the lives of all 10 crew members on board. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia was shocked today by an air tragedy as two helicopters crashed following a mid-air collision over the Royal Malaysian Navy (TLDM) base in Lumut, Perak yesterday morning, claiming the lives of all 10 crew members on board.

The heart-wrenching tragedy marks the worst helicopter crash in the country since nine years ago and the eighth incident to occur within the same period.

The deadliest helicopter accident prior to this occurred on May 5, 2016, when a Eurocopter AS350 helicopter crashed near Sebuyau, Sarawak, claiming six lives, including the then Deputy Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Tan Sri Noriah Kasnon, and Kuala Kangsar MP, Datuk Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad.

In yesterday's tragedy at 9.32 am, TLDM confirmed the deaths of 10 of its personnel, involving seven crew members of the Maritime Operations Helicopter (HOM-AW139) and three crew members of the TLDM Fennec.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the HOM-AW139 helicopter crashed on the TLDM Lumut Stadium field, while the Fennec aircraft crashed into the TLDM Lumut Sports Complex swimming pool. All the families of the victims have been informed for identification purposes.

The post-mortem for the victims is currently underway at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB) in Ipoh, after all of them were recovered from the two aircraft wreckage sites earlier yesterday.

According to HRPB Deputy medical director (I) HRPB, Dr Liaw Kok Toon, the post-mortem process is expected to be completed by noon today.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the two helicopters were undergoing a rehearsal for the third time in conjunction with the Royal Malaysian Navy Fleet Open Day scheduled for this Saturday.

He said the 10 victims were based in Lumut and Kota Kinabalu, adding that TLDM will set up an investigation board to identify the cause of the incident.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia expressed his sadness and conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims.

In a Facebook post, Sultan Ibrahim ordered the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to conduct a thorough investigation to get full information on the incident.

"I and Raja Zarith are deeply saddened by the loss of our nation's heroes in this tragedy. Al-Fatihah and our heartfelt condolences over their passing," His Majesty said.

Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, meanwhile, consented to the cancellation of the Royal Malaysian Navy's (TLDM) 90th Anniversary celebrations and parade, which was scheduled for this Friday.

According to a post uploaded on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page yesterday, a Yasin recital, tahlil and 'doa selamat' will be held at the An-Nur Mosque at the TLDM base in Lumut before Friday prayers and Sultan Sharafuddin, as TLDM Captain-in-Chief, is expected to attend the event.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in his Facebook post, said the nation mourned the heart-wrenching tragedy.

Anwar said the tragedy had deeply affected the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) family and was a great loss for the country, besides extending his condolences to all the families of the victims and praying that they would be given strength in facing the tragedy.

"I have been informed that an immediate investigation will be conducted by the Ministry of Defence, especially TLDM, to determine the cause of the accident," said the prime minister.

In the meantime, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof hopes that no one will speculate on the incident.

Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said all parties also need to respect the victims' families by refraining from sharing any images and video clips of the incident to respect the sensitivities of the families.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil also shared the same sentiment and advised media practitioners and the public against circulating the video clips of the tragedy out of respect for the relatives and families of the victims involved in the crash as the clips would affect them.

"I will ask the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) to study and if need be take whatever as required as with any crash we need to give space for family members and not to spread the videos," he told reporters at Wisma Bernama yesterday.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and several Menteris Besar, including Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nasuruddin Daud also conveyed their condolences.

The 10 TLDM crew members killed in the crash include Squadron 502 commanding officer Commander Muhamad Amir Mohamad; Lieutenant T Sivasutan (Squadron 502 pilot) and Warrant Officer II Mohd Shahrizan Mohd Termizi (Squadron 502 Air Quartermaster).

Others killed were Squadron 503 Commanding Officer Commander Muhammad Firdaus Ramli; Lt Commander Wan Rezaudeen Kamal Zainal Abidin; Squadron 503 Air Tactical Officer, Lt Commander Mohammad Amirulfaris Mohd Marzukhi; and Squadron 503 Air Quartermaster Warrant Officer II Muhammad Faisol Tamadun.

The three women killed in the collision were Able Seaman I Joanna Felicia anak Rohna from the TLDM Air Base, Warrant Officer II Norfarahimi Saedy (West Armada Supply Depot) as well as Petty Officer Nor Rahiza Anuar (West Armada Supply Depot).

JAKARTA: Indonesia President Joko Widodo and his son, incoming vice president Gibran Rakabuming Raka, are no longer members of the country's largest party after they backed rival candidate and election winner Prabowo Subianto, a party official said on Tuesday.

Their exit will put the spotlight on the next moves for the popular Jokowi, as the outgoing president is known, whose backing for Defence Minister Prabowo was widely interpreted as a move to retain political influence and preserve his legacy after a decade at the helm.

Komarudin Watubun, who heads the ethical division of the Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), said Jokowi and Gibran were not expelled but ceased to be members when they decided not to endorse PDIP's presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo.

Helped by Jokowi's tacit endorsement and with Gibran as running mate, Prabowo won by a huge margin in the Feb. 14 election, taking 58% of the vote compared to Ganjar's 16%.

"They decided to be on the opposite side," Komaruddin told Reuters. "Regardless of what happened, Jokowi reached the highest career level in the party, he has become president. We want to preserve his dignity," he said.

The president's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Jokowi joined PDIP in 2004 to run for mayor of Surakarta and won two terms. He was later elected Jakarta governor and became president for two terms with PDIP's backing. Gibran has also served as Surakarta mayor since 2020.

Jokowi's backing of Prabowo has created tension between him and PDIP, which will remain the biggest party in parliament following the election.

Jokowi has yet to discuss his political plans but according to several sources, he wants to take over the second-biggest party, Golkar, a move that could see him retain sizable influence and potentially counterbalance that of old rival Prabowo when he takes office in October.

Prabowo's current coalition comprises 48% of seats and senior aides have said he aims to expand that to command a majority. Several parties, such as Nasdem, which backed another candidate, have already held talks with Prabowo.

Speculation is also rife that PDIP chairwoman Megawati Sukarnoputri, a political heavyweight, could soon meet Prabowo to discuss joining his coalition amid the ongoing rift with Jokowi.

Turut hadir Timbalan Menteri Komunikasi Teo Nie Ching, Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Komunikasi Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Sumber Manusia Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud, Pengerusi Lembaga Perkeso Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal dan Pengerusi FINAS Datuk Kamil Othman.
