Ministry of Health Has Advised Malaysians To Wear Masks With The Recent Spike In Cases

FMT

Health minister Khairy Jamaluddin has advised Malaysians to wear masks when on the campaign trail and at polling centres for the 15th general election (GE15).

Khairy said the ministry “highly recommends” that the people wear masks, especially with the recent spike in Covid-19 cases.

“I encourage anyone participating in the election campaign to wear a face mask, especially when indoors. I have also informed the Election Commission (EC) that face masks are highly recommended, though not compulsory,” he told a press conference.

Khairy said the ministry had also advised the EC that those on duty at polling centres should wear face masks.

“Further announcements will be made by the EC in the coming days,” he said, advising the candidates to set a good example when on the campaign trail, especially when visiting senior citizens or those who were sick.

He said the ministry had detected four cases of the Covid-19 Omicron subvariant XBB so far, though all patients were in Category 2 and experienced minor symptoms.

“The patients underwent isolation for seven days as per the health ministry’s SOPs. All close contacts were also identified and are in good health,” he said.

He expected the number of cases to increase slightly over the next few weeks, but said there was no cause for concern for now.

The XBB subvariant was first detected in India in August and has since been detected in more than 17 countries, including Singapore, Australia, Bangladesh, Denmark, Japan, and the US.

Khairy also said Malaysia saw a 16.5% increase in Covid-19 cases in the past week, with 16,917 infections reported compared with 14,525 the preceding week.

Overall bed occupancy for Covid-19 patients at healthcare facilities increased by 14.3%, while usage of intensive care unit (ICU) beds increased by 2%.

However, the number of deaths dropped by 31% from 29 to 20.

MEXICO CITY: Red Bull's double world champion Max Verstappen won the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday to set a Formula One record of 14 victories from a single season, as well as the most points scored.

The Dutch driver led from pole position at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, stopping on lap 26 of 71 to switch from soft to medium tyres and taking the chequered flag 15.186 seconds clear of Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton.

"It's been an incredible year so far, we are definitely enjoying it and we'll try to go for more," said Verstappen, who clinched his second title in Japan on Oct. 9 and had an untroubled afternoon.

Red Bull's Sergio Perez finished third in front of his cheering home crowd after a race that was low on thrills and all about tyre strategy.

Verstappen's win was the 25-year-old's fourth in Mexico and the podium was the same as last year.

In Austin, Texas, last weekend he had pulled level with German champions Michael Schumacher (2004) and Sebastian Vettel (2013) on 13 wins in a season.

There are more races now than then, however, with the 2022 season featuring 22 compared to 19 in 2013 and 18 in 2004.

Verstappen also took his points tally to 416 -- 136 more than Perez who moved up to second overall and three more than the previous record set by Hamilton in 2019.

It was also a ninth win in a row and 16th from 20 races for Red Bull, who wrapped up the constructors' title in Texas with three rounds to spare, but Mercedes showed they were getting closer.

BETTER STRATEGY

"I was so close in that first stint but I think the Red Bull was clearly too fast today and ultimately, maybe they had the better tyre strategy," said Hamilton, who felt he should have started on softs instead of mediums before switching to hards.

"I'm not sure (hard) was the right tyre at the end."

George Russell lost out at the start, lining up on the front row for Mercedes but dropping two places to fourth as Hamilton muscled past his team mate with Perez also seizing the opportunity to go third.

Russell finished fourth, pitting on the penultimate lap to deny Perez the bonus point for fastest lap.

Both Mercedes drivers complained about the strategy but were assured from the pit wall that Red Bull's medium tyres would lose performance -- a hope that proved to be optimistic.

"That medium looks quick mate, they're going to go to the end," said Hamilton over the radio 10 laps from the end, accepting it was game over.

The race was already a four-driver battle after 20 of the 71 laps, with Ferrari's Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finishing fifth and sixth but far off the pace and the latter close to being lapped.

"This weekend we were just slow," said Sainz, who finished 58 seconds behind Verstappen.

Daniel Ricciardo put on the show of the day, reeling off overtakes on the soft tyres and finishing seventh for McLaren despite a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with AlphaTauri's Yuki Tsunoda.

His performance won the Australian, who is leaving McLaren at the end of the season with no other drive lined up, the vote for driver of the day by fans and that familiar smile was broader than ever.

Esteban Ocon was eighth for Renault-owned Alpine, after team mate Fernando Alonso retired with an engine failure, with McLaren's Lando Norris ninth and Valtteri Bottas back in the points for Alfa Romeo in 10th.

"Unbelievable. What a season, what a season," complained Alonso before he pulled off and parked up on lap 65, triggering a brief virtual safety car while the Alpine was pushed away by marshals.

Formula One said 395,902 spectators attended over the three days, compared to 371,779 last year.

AHMEDABAD: At least 81 people were killed in the western Indian state of Gujarat on Sunday when a footbridge packed with sightseers enjoying holiday festivities collapsed and plunged them into the river below.

Reuters TV footage showed dozens of people clinging onto the cables and twisted remains of the bridge over the Machhu River in the town of Morbi as emergency teams struggled to rescue them.

Some clambered up the broken structure to try to make their way to the river banks, while others swam to safety. A number of children were among the victims.

Prateek Vasava, who swam to the river bank after falling from the bridge, told 24 Hours Gujarati-language news channel that he witnessed several children drop into the river.

"I wanted to pull some of them along with me but they had drowned or got swept away," he said.

The bridge had collapsed in just a few seconds, he said.

Atul Prajapati, a medical officer at the state hospital near the disaster site, said: "We have found 81 bodies and the final rites process has begun."

Dozens of people were also injured, officials said.

Authorities said more than 400 people were on and around the colonial-era suspension bridge at the time of the collapse. State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said more than 150 people were on the bridge itself.

The bridge had drawn many sightseers celebrating the Diwali, or festival of lights, and Chhath Puja holidays.

"Many children were enjoying holidays for Diwali and they came here as tourists. All of them fell one on top of another. The bridge collapsed due to overloading," said one witness, who gave his name as Sukram

The 230-metre bridge was built during British rule in the 19th century. It had been closed for renovation for six months and was reopened for the public last week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is in his home state Gujarat for a three-day visit, said he had directed the state chief minister to mobilise teams urgently for the rescue operation.

Fifty navy and 30 air force personnel were called in to help along with a national disaster management team to trace missing people, the government said in a statement. A five-member team was appointed to conduct an investigation into the disaster.

Opposition party leaders alleged that the government had not conducted a thorough technical assessment and load bearing capacity before it was opened to the public.

Morbi is renowned as ceramic manufacturing center.

The incident also comes ahead of elections in Gujarat, which are expected to be held by the year-end with the current term of the Modi's ruling party's term ending in February, 2023.

JOHOR BAHRU: Fatin Zulaikha Zaidi of DAP will be contesting the Mersing parliamentary seat, while Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong will stand in Iskandar Puteri in the upcoming 15th general election (GE15).

Both candidates were announced by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook at an event in Skudai here tonight. He also confirmed that the party will contest seven parliamentary seats in Johor, and field four men and three women candidates.

A Johor Bahru native, Fatin Zulaikha, 29, has served as special officer to Johor Raya assemblyman Liow Cai Tong since 2018, and is the third Malay female candidate for DAP in this election, after the announcement of Young Syefura Othman (Bentong) dan Syerleena Abdul Rashid (Bukit Bendera).

Meanwhile, Liew, who is also Perling assemblyman, will defend the seat won by Lim Kit Siang in the previous general election, while the two other incumbents, former deputy education minister, Teo Nie Ching, and Wong Shu Qi will defend their Kulai and Kluang seats respectively.

DAP had previously announced that Paloh assemblyman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali would stand in Ayer Hitam, former Skudai assemblyman Tan Hong Pin would contest Bakri, while incumbent Pang Hok Liong would defend Labis.

KUALA LUMPUR: National No.1 women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah created history by winning the French Open at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris tonight.

They defeated two-time world champions from Japan Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara 21-19, 18-21 21-15 in a pulsating final, making them the first Malaysian women's pair to win the French Open.

It was their second championship title and the biggest success of the world number 11 pair in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour series after winning the Swiss Open in March last year.

The match that lasted for 72 minutes was the first between the two pairs.

In the first set, Pearly-Thinaah started slowly but soon got on their way to hold a 18-10 lead. However, they faced anxious moments when the Japanese pair caught up to 20-19 before they got the winning point.

Pearly-Thinaah, however, failed to capitalise on the first set win, and despite their best to keep pace, failed to check a resurgent Matsumoto-Nagahara who took the second set 21-18 in 20 minutes.

The Malaysian pair once again got off to a slow start in the rubber tie after trailing 2-6, but then found their rhythm and competitive spirit to take a 8-7 lead before going on to clinch the title with a 21-15 win.

The closest a Malaysian women's doubles pair got to the French Open title was in 2008 when Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui emerged as runners-up.

Meanwhile, World No 1, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won the men's singles title after defeating compatriot Rasmus Gemke 21-14, 21-15.

IPOH: The Tapah parliamentary seat will be contested by PKR in the 15th general election (GE15) and not by the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said Pakatan Harapan's final round of negotiations yesterday decided that the seat will continue to be contested by a PKR candidate.

"We also decided that PKR will continue to contest in Sungai Siput and Tapah (Perak) as well as Sembrong (Johor).

"Although there was an announcement (of MUDA contesting in Tapah), it is inaccurate as (MUDA president) Syed Saddiq (Syed Abdul Rahman) informed me (that Perak MUDA chairman Mutalib Uthman's statement) does not represent MUDA. Tapah is a PKR seat," the PH chairman said after a tea session with the local community in Kampung Ulu Chemor here today.

Prior to this, Mutalib in a statement, said that he was contesting in Tapah following negotiations between PH and MUDA.

Meanwhile, Anwar said the PH presidential council had agreed that the Changkat Jong state seat would remain contested by DAP after taking into account the views of both parties, namely DAP and Amanah, after which a consensus was reached.

"Although Amanah had strong arguments (to contest Changkat Jong), after considering the views of various parties, the PH leadership (agreed) that Changkat Jong will be DAP's," he said.

DAP and Amanah were both reportedly eyeing the seat and had submitted names of proposed candidates for consideration.

KUALA LUMPUR: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) will contest 54 parliamentary seats in the 15th General Election (GE15) to be held on Nov 19.

It is a 35 per cent increase from the number of seats the party contested in 2018's general election, which was 27.

Amanah deputy president Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said he will contest the Pulai parliamentary seat while the party president Mohamad Sabu will defend the Kota Raja seat.

In the GE14, Mohamad Sabu captured Kota Raja with a majority of 71,142 votes while Salahuddin defeated incumbent Pulai Member of Parliament and former Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed with a 28,924-vote majority.

The party also announced that its vice presidents Datuk Mahfuz Omar and Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa will defend the Pokok Sena and Parit Buntar parliamentary seats respectively.

In addition, Amanah communications director Khalid Abdul Samad was named the candidate for the Titiwangsa parliamentary seat while the party's strategy director Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was nominated to defend the Kuala Selangor seat.

Four incumbents were dropped as candidates during the announcement at Wisma Amanah Negara here, namely vice president Datuk Hasanuddin (Hulu Langat), Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Sepang), Datuk Dr Hasan Bahrom (Tampin) and Datuk Mohd Anuar Mohd Tahir (Temerloh).

Raj Muni Aiman Athirah was named as the candidate for Sepang, Mohd Hasbie Muda for Temerloh, Mohd Sany Hamzan (Hulu Langat) and Muhammad Faiz Fadzil (Tampin), while Azli Yusof will contest the Shah Alam parliamentary seat retained by Khalid since 2008.

Khalid said the incumbents were dropped to make way for new faces, describing the move as a transition and change that the party wishes to happen, not a reflection of their performance.

"They (incumbents) have shown good and satisfactory performance and we consider this (move) an opportunity for new faces," he said.

Meanwhile, in the same press conference, Mohamad said nomination documents for all Amanah candidates will be submitted for the approval of Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and to be finalised before nomination day on Nov 5.

Asked about former Amanah members, Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz and Datuk Husam Musa who are contesting under PKR, Mohamad said he welcomed the move as both are still under PH.

Nik Omar will contest the Pasir Salak parliamentary seat and Husam was nominated as the candidate for Pasir Mas.

MELAKA: Bersatu vice-president Datuk Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen today announced his resignation from all his positions and has left the party with immediate effect.

He said this was after he was not listed as Perikatan National (PN) candidate for the Tangga Batu parliamentary seat despite having served in the constituency for six years since 2016.

backup_ads

"A few days ago, I was contacted by Bersatu president (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) and deputy president (Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu), who informed me that I was not listed for Tangga Batu and instead, I was offered to contest in several other alternative seats including Bagan Datuk which will be contested by UMNO president (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi).

"I feel sad because all my efforts and service in Tangga Batu parliamentary constituency for more than six years were not given fair and proper consideration," he told a press conference here today.

He further said that it is the practice and tradition of any political party in this country to prioritise the highest office holders, such as the vice president, to contest in the constituency he leads.

Mohd Rafiq, who was one of the early leaders of Bersatu, said he had sent his resignation letter as Bersatu vice-president, Tangga Batu PN chairman, Tangga Batu Bersatu Division chief and Cheng Bersatu Branch chief to Muhyiddin a few days ago.

Asked about his plans after this, Mohd Rafiq said he wanted to take a break from politics and focus on his family.

He also refused to contest on any other political party's ticket in the upcoming 15th General Election, including as an independent candidate.

"However, I will continue to serve the people of Tangga Batu even without any political platform, and I may work with non-governmental organisations after this," he said.

Amanah sacks its Kedah chairman

ALOR SETAR: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) sacked its Kedah chairman, Datuk Phalrolrazi Mohd Zawawi, today for violating the party's constitution.

Amanah secretary-general, Datuk Dr Mohd Hatta Md Ramli, said Phalrolrazi disobeyed the party's decisions and acted against its interests.

He said the dismissal, based on the power vested under Clause 6.2(b), was made by the Amanah central management committee which met today.

"Therefore, the Kedah deputy chairman, Datuk Dr Ismail Salleh, will take over the duties of the state Amanah chairman," he said in a statement today, adding that both decisions took effect immediately.

Meanwhile, Phahrolrazi, who is also the state assemblyman for Alor Mengkudu, is expected to hold a press conference this afternoon at the Jerai Amanah office in Guar Chempedak.

The press conference is on allocating the Jerai parliamentary seat to be contested by DAP in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).

Yesterday, Pakatan Harapan (PH) announced that Kedah DAP deputy chairman, Zulhazmi Shariff, as the candidate for the only parliamentary seat contested by DAP in the state.

Phahrolrazi was not present at the meeting held in Sungai Petani which was also attended by Amanah president, Mohamad Sabu.

Meanwhile, Amanah communications director, Khalid Abd Samad, in a statement said that its national management committee made the decision against Phahrolrazi for instigating the Kedah Amanah leaders and members to boycott GE15.

He said although there were differences in opinion over the party's strategies and seat distribution, the instigation was unacceptable.

"It was an act of sabotage and could affect the interests of Amanah dan PH. Amanah thanks his contributions to the party all this while and in being one of the early leaders in forming the party, as well as our Kedah chairman, but his action was over the limit," he added.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) last night revealed three of its candidates who will be contesting in the 15th general election (GE15), with more to be announced next week.

Its deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said the party, formed in September 2020, will contest in Kepala Batas (Penang), Tanjong Karang (Selangor) and Tanjung Piai (Johor).

Amira Aisya, who is also MUDA election director, named Danial Abdul Majeed as the candidate for Kepala Batas; Central Executive Committee member Siti Rahayu Baharin (Tanjung Karang) and party co-founder Lim Wei Jiet in Tanjung Piai.

Without disclosing the number of seats allocated to MUDA through negotiations with Pakatan Harapan (PH), she said candidates for several other seats will be announced soon, including Sabah, on Tuesday.

Amira Aisya said negotiations with PH yesterday evening finalised three key issues under the election package, including backing Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister candidate.

"There will also be no clash of seats between PH and MUDA and MUDA will be given the flexibility to use its own party logo," she said at a media conference at the party headquarters here last night.

Amira Aisya also said the party will be using PH's manifesto to woo voters in the upcoming polls, adding that all of the seats to be contested by the party were either rural seats or those held by Barisan Nasional (BN) ministers or deputy prime ministers

Meanwhile, MUDA president, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said he will be making an announcement on the status of his candidacy for the Muar parliamentary seat, in which he is incumbent, on Wednesday.

This is after the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered him to enter his defence on four charges involving criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets and money laundering on Friday.

In GE14, Syed Saddiq, then a PH candidate from Bersatu, defeated the incumbent from BN Datuk Seri Razali Ibrahim and Abdul Aziz Talib (PAS) with a 6,953-vote majority.

Syed Saddiq said seat negotiations with PH went well and the total number of seats to be contested will be announced soon.

The Election Commission has fixed Nov 19 as polling day, Nov 5 for nominations while early voting will take place on Nov 15.

KUANTAN: The 63 Malaysian umrah pilgrims stranded in Saudi Arabia since June may be brought home next week, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah.

He said efforts are being made to bring home the pilgrims, comprising 28 adults and 35 children, including holding joint discussions with the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia (Kuala Lumpur) and authorities there.

"They went there to perform the umrah and I was told that they had some problems. However, the full details will be announced later as it is still under discussion. I can only confirm that there is a big possibility that we can bring them home," he told a media conference at the Indera Mahkota Parliamentary Service Centre Office here today.

Earlier this month, Wisma Putra and the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) issued a joint statement confirming that 63 Malaysians were stranded after being taken to Madinah by the Tarekat al-Naqsyabandiah Al-Kholidiah group for umrah in March.

However, they only stayed in Madinah and were never taken to Makkah to complete the pilgrimage, while the tarekat leader was banished by the Saudi Arabian government on Aug 20 for violating local laws.

At the media conference, Saifuddin also said that five more Malaysians who were victims of a job scam syndicate in Cambodia arrived safely at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) yesterday.

As of yesterday, he said the Foreign Ministry had recorded 453 Malaysians as having been victims of job scam syndicates in Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, with 269 of them already brought home.

Fifty-two more are still at the Immigration depots of the countries involved while efforts are ongoing to trace the remaining 132 victims.

In addition, Saifuddin said seven Malaysians working as forex investors at the Cambodia-Vietnam border will be brought home today.

"However, they have not been categorised as syndicate victims after taking into account that they went there to work voluntarily and were free to enter and leave their workplace," he said.

SEOUL: At least 146 people were killed in a crush when a huge crowd celebrating Halloween surged into an alley in a night life area of the South Korean capital Seoul on Saturday night, emergency officials said.

A further 150 people were injured in the melee in Seoul's Itaewon district, Choi Sung-beom, head of the Yongsan Fire Station, said in a briefing at the scene.

Many of the injured were in serious condition and receiving emergency treatment, the officials said.

It was the first Halloween event in Seoul in three years after the country lifted COVID restrictions and social distancing. Many of the party-goers were wearing masks and Halloween costumes.

Some witnesses described the crowd becoming increasingly unruly and agitated as the evening deepened. The incident took place at about 10:20 p.m. (1320 GMT).

"A number of people fell during a Halloween festival, and we have a large number of casualties," Choi said. Many of those killed were near a nightclub.

Many of the victims were women in their twenties, Choi said.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes moments before the stampede, with the police on hand in anticipation of the Halloween event at times having trouble maintaining control of the crowds.

Moon Ju-young, 21, said there were clear signs of trouble in the alleys before the incident.

"It was at least more than 10 times crowded than usual," he told Reuters.

Social media footage showed hundreds of people packed in the narrow, sloped alley crushed and immobile as emergency officials and police tried to pull them to free.

One woman heard on a social media post cries out in English: "Oh my God, oh my God, Jesus fucking Christ."

Choi, the Yongsan district fire chief, said all the deaths were likely from the crush in the single narrow alley.

Other footage showed chaotic scenes of fire officials and citizens treating dozens of people who appeared to be unconscious.

An unnamed woman who said she was the mother of a survivor said her daughter and others were trapped for more than an hour before being pulled from the crush of people in the alley.

A Reuters witness said a make-shift morgue was set up in a building adjacent to the scene. About four dozen bodies were carried out later on wheeled stretchers and moved to a government facility to identify the victims, according to the witness.

The Itaewon district is popular with young South Koreans and expatriates alike, its dozens of bars and restaurants packed on Saturday for Halloween after businesses had suffered a sharp decline over three years of the pandemic.

"You would see big crowds at Christmas and fireworks...but this was several ten-folds bigger than any of that," Park Jung-hoon, 21, told Reuters from the scene.

Foreigners were among those transferred to nearby hospitals.

"The area is still chaotic so we are still trying to figure out the exact number of people injured," said Moon Hyun-joo, an official at the National Fire Agency.

With the easing of the COVID pandemic, curfews on bars and restaurants and a limit of 10 people for private gatherings were lifted in April. An outdoor mask mandate was dropped in May.

Authorities said they were investigating the exact cause of the incident. President Yoon Suk-yeol presided over an emergency meeting with senior aides.

KUALA LUMPUR: Incumbent Ampang Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin is the legitimate president of Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM) according to the party constitution and no one should dispute this, said its secretary-general Nor Hizwan Ahmad.

He said the appointment of Zuraida was agreed to at the party's sixth annual general meeting on Oct 1 this year and the minutes of the meeting had been sent to the Registrar of Societies (RoS).

It had also been agreed since the early days of the party's formation that former president Datuk Larry Sng Wei Shien would hand over the post to Zuraida, he said.

"His (Sng) action (questioning Zuraida's legitimacy) is inappropriate. I believe it is an attempt to sabotage the party or a publicity stunt. He may argue he is still the president, but the motion to appoint Zuraida has been passed in the AGM.

"Sng has also repeatedly acknowledged the legitimacy of Zuraida as president in WhatsApp messages when communicating with PBM supreme council members," he told a media conference at the PBM Bukit Antarabangsa state constituency main operations room here today.

Sng, in a statement on his Facebook account two days ago, said he had never relinquished the president's post and that he would contest in the 15th general election (GE15) using the PBM logo.

In another Facebook post yesterday, Sng stressed that he is the rightful president as contained in RoS records, and announced the suspension of Nor Hizwan and PBM information chief Zakaria Abdul Hamid from their posts.

Hizwan disputed their suspensions, saying the incumbent Julau MP did not have the power to do that as he was no longer the president.

"To me, I only take instructions from the president and that person is Zuraida. So, it is up to her to suspend us," he added.

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who is PKR vice president, will be contesting in Gombak, which may see a fierce battle with incumbent Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

In the GE13, Mohd Rafizi contested in Pandan and won the seat after defeating Lim Chin Yee (BN-MCA) and Tan Yew Leng (Independent) with a 26,729-vote majority.

However, he could not defend the seat in the GE14 as he was disqualified as a Member of Parliament after the Shah Alam Sessions Court found him guilty and sentenced him to 30-month jail for disclosing the details of four bank accounts relating to the National Feedlot Centre (NFC) scandal.

The seat was contested and won by Wan Azizah with a 52,543-vote majority.

The announcement of PKR candidates at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council field in Taman Kosas here last night was also attended by party president cum Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminudin Harun, who is also party vice-president, was named the candidate for Port Dickson, while Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz, the son of former PAS spiritual leader, the late Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, would run for the Pasir Salak seat.

Incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Hang Tuah Jaya Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin will be fielded in Bagan Datuk as Angkatan Keadilan (AMK) chief Adam Adli was named as the party's new candidate for Hang Tuah Jaya, while Datuk Husam Musa to contest in Pasir Mas, Kelantan.

ALOR SETAR: A total of 133 passengers who were travelling in a ferry from the Kuala Kedah Jetty Terminal, near here, to the Kuah Passenger Ferry Terminal in Langkawi were rescued after the ferry ran aground in Kuala Kedah at 4.30 pm today.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone director, Commander (Maritime) Noor Azreyanti Ishak said the operations centre received a call from the Malaysian Maritime Department (JLM) with regard to the 'Starcity Express 6' ferry which had run aground at 0.5 nautical miles from the Kuala Kedah estuary.

"A tugboat, belonging to a cargo company in Kuala Kedah, had tried to tow the ferry back but the ferry had strayed from its original course and got stuck in the mudflats.

"On receiving the report, Bot PERKASA 1224 was deployed to the location to assist the ferry and JLM to transfer all 133 passengers, comprising men, women and children to safety," she said in a statement today.

She said the operation to transfer all the passengers back to the Kuala Kedah Jetty Terminal was aided by several fishing boats that were in the area at that time.

"The rescue operation ended at 6.30 pm after all passengers, who did not suffer any injuries, were safely taken to the jetty terminal," she said.

Noor Azreyanti said any emergency calls at sea can be channelled through the 24-hour emergency line MERS 999 or the Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone Operations Centre at 04-7310579.

Meanwhile, JLM in a statement said an investigation team had been set up to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Apart from this, a re-inspection will be done on the ferry which will also be monitored by a JLM surveyor to ensure that the ferry was safe to resume operations.

IPOH: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke last night reiterated that there will be no clash between DAP candidates or Pakatan Harapan component party, Amanah, for the Changkat Jong state assembly seat during the 15th General Election (GE15) following the announcement today.

Loke said what happened was a misunderstanding because a decision was made at the 'top three' level which was attended by Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, while the announcement of candidates today was done at the Perak state level.

"We had a meeting at the 'top three' level before the PH convention recently. Therefore, we did not announce something that was not decided. It was finalised at the top level.

"There will be no clash because there is only one PH candidate in Changkat Jong, that is from DAP. There could have been a misunderstanding that can be resolved," he told reporters after the announcement of PH-DAP candidates for Perak, last night.

In the meeting, Loke announced that the party would be contesting 19 state seats, an addition of one seat compared with GE14, that is Changkat Jong, represented by Badrul Hisham Badarudin.

Yesterday morning, it was reported that Perak Amanah would be contesting in 20 state assembly seats, including Changkat Jong that would be represented by state vice president Muhaimin Sulam.

Loke said the party would be contesting eight parliamentary seats, one more than what the party had contested during the GE14, namely Gerik which will be contested by Ahmad Tarmizi Mohd Jam and all seats won in the previous election, namely Ipoh Timor, Ipoh Barat, Kampar, Batu Gajah, Teluk Intan, Beruas and Taiping.

Among the prominent names to contest in the GE15 are Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat and Kepayang state assembly seat while Perak opposition leader Aziz Bari will be contesting in Tebing Tinggi.

Perak has 59 state assembly seats and 24 Parliamentary seats.

The Election Commission (EC) has set Nov 19 as the date for voting during the GE15 while nomination date has been set for Nov 5, while the date for early voting (postal votes) is Nov 15.
