AFF Cup: Singapore leap-frog Malaysia after draw with Vietnam

KUALA LUMPUR: Harimau Malaya are left with no other choice but to register a win against Singapore in their crucial Group B match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Jan 3, in an effort to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2022 ASEAN Football Federation Cup (AFF Cup).

This is after the team from across the causeway played to a goalless draw against two-time champions Vietnam at the Jalan Besar Stadium in the island republic last night.

The 0-0 result saw Singapore collecting seven points and seizing second place from Malaysia who dropped to third place with six points while Vietnam, who have the advantage of goal difference, remain group leader with seven points.

Despite dominating more than 70 percent of the possession in the first half, Vietnam's attacking machine looked unimaginative and failed to break through the home defence, with their best attempt coming in the 17th minute through Vu Van Thanh only to be denied by veteran goalkeeper of the homesters, Hassan Sunny.

Singapore, who sometimes tried to sneak into Vietnam's territory, had a precious chance to score but a left-footer from outside the penalty box by young striker Ilhan Fandi soared too high in the 26th minute.

The bland action from both teams in the second half saw Vietnam almost break the deadlock but a solid kick by midfielder Nguyen Hoang Duc struck only the right post of the goal-mouth in the 84th minute and the scoreless deadlock remained until the end of the match.

In another Group B match, a goal in second-half stoppage time by striker Maung Maung Lwin saved Myanmar with a draw to tie 2-2 against Laos at the Thuwunna Stadium in Yangon.

Laos stunned the hosts first when midfielder Sukaphon Vongchiengkham opened the scoring in the 12th minute but the advantage lasted only two minutes after Myanmar equalised through midfielder Kyaw Min Oo.

However, striker Ekkamai Ratxachak put the visitors back in front at 2-1 a minute into the second half before they were dashed by a last-minute goal from Maung Lwin.

Myanmar, who will travel to the My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi, to play Vietnam on Jan 3, remain in fourth spot with one point while Laos close their campaign at the bottom, also with one point.

KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution is aggrieved over the Shah Alam High Court's decision to acquit Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi from all 40 charges of receiving bribes in connection with the Foreign Visa System (VLN).

In its petition of appeal filed yesterday (Dec 29), the prosecution, as the appellant, submitted 14 reasons focused on the findings of fact and law made by Judge Datuk Mohd Yazid Mustafa on the question of whether there was bribery in the giving and receiving of money in the case.

The prosecution claimed that Mohd Yazid erred in terms of facts and law when he ruled that it (the prosecution) had failed to prove a prima facie case and failed to comprehensively assess evidence given to prove every element of the charges faced by Ahmad Zahid.

"The judge had erred after he rejected proof of the element of accepting bribes and the element of obtaining valuables without any favour in return from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB) when there was sufficient and solid oral evidence and documents to prove it," the prosecution said in its bid to set aside the court's decision on Sept 23.

The prosecution also stated that the judge misdirected himself when rejecting the evidence regarding the delivery of bribes to Ahmad Zahid when comparing the facts between the case and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's bribery case regarding the hybrid solar project.

The prosecution claimed that the judge erred in assessing the credibility of the prosecution witnesses when he failed to take into account that they had no malicious or hidden motives when giving evidence about giving or sending money to the deputy prime minister.

"The trial judge erred when he rejected the testimony of prosecution witnesses not only on weak and unreasonable grounds, but also took into account irrelevant evidence, which was never presented, and also made conclusions based on fabricated doubts.

"The judge erred when he failed to take into account the testimony of the prosecution witness that a ledger presented as evidence was a current document and rejected it completely even though there was sufficient evidence to prove otherwise," the prosecution claimed.

The prosecution's appeal is set for case management on Jan 10 at the Court of Appeal.

On Sept 23, Mohd Yazid acquitted Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie at the end of the prosecution case against him.

Ahmad Zahid was charged with 33 counts of receiving bribes amounting to SG$13.56 million from Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd (UKSB) for himself as Home Minister to extend the contract of the company as the operator of the one-stop centre (OSC) service in China and the VLN system, as well as to maintain its contract agreement with the Home Ministry for the supply of the VLN integrated system.

On another seven counts, the Bagan Datuk MP was charged with obtaining for himself SG$1,150,000, RM3.125 million, 15,000 Swiss Franc and US$15,000 from the same company which he knew had links with his official function.

He was charged with committing the offences at Seri Satria, Precinct 16, Putrajaya, and Country Heights Kajang between October 2014 and March 2018.

No Fireworks at KLCC To Usher in 2023 - Petronas Twin Towers

Petronas Twin Towers had announced last week that KLCC will welcome the new year differently this year, following Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent announcement regarding the cancellation of 2023 New Year Celebration in Dataran Merdeka

The upcoming new year countdown celebration with performances and fireworks has been cancelled, but the KLCC Park and Lake Symphony Fountains will still be illuminated.

“KLCC The Place stands in solidarity with fellow Malaysians who are currently experiencing challenging times with the ongoing natural disasters, the flood, and other difficulties,” stated the Petronas Twin Towers in a Facebook post.

Cristiano Ronaldo has joined Saudi club Al-Nassr leaving Manchester United in a deal that makes him the highest paid player in history.

Cristiano Ronaldo has joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr after leaving Manchester United in controversial fashion, the club announced Friday.

Ronaldo signed a contract through the summer of 2025 and, according to reports, will receive $75 million per year to make him the highest paid player in history. Sources did not dispute that figure to ESPN.

"I am excited to experience a new football league in a different country," Ronaldo said in Al-Nassr's statement announcing the deal.

"The vision of what Al Nassr are doing and developing in Saudi Arabia both in terms of men's and women's football is very inspiring. We can see from Saudi Arabia's recent performance at the World Cup that this is a country with big football ambitions and a lot of potential.

"I am fortunate that I have won everything I set out to win in European football and feel now that this is the right moment to share my experience in Asia. I am looking forward to joining my new teammates and together with them help the Club to achieve success."

Ronaldo forced his way out of Old Trafford last month, mutually terminating his contract following a contentious TV interview.

Sources told ESPN that the 37-year-old trained alone at Real Madrid's Valdebebas training ground earlier this month as he prepared to make a decision on his future following Portugal's exit from the World Cup.

Ronaldo endured mixed fortunes at the tournament in Qatar, becoming the first male player to score in five World Cups but coming on only as a second-half substitute as Portugal lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarterfinals.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was coy about his international future following that defeat, saying he would "never turn my back on my teammates and my country" but adding that he would "let time be a good adviser and allow everyone to draw their own conclusions."

Earlier this month United boss Erik ten Hag said the club were "looking to the future" after the forward's departure, explaining that Ronaldo was "gone and it's the past."

Al-Nassr, who are based in Riyadh, play in the Saudi Pro League and have the second most top-flight league titles in the country's history.

"This is more than history in the making," Al-Nassr president Musalli Almuammar said in a statement. "This is a signing that will not only inspire our club to achieve even greater success but inspire our league, our nation and future generations, boys and girls to be the best version of themselves.

"He is a special footballer and a special person whose impact is felt far beyond football. Cristiano is joining a club with big ambitions, a competitive club amongst the very best in Asia and will be welcomed to a country that is making massive progress on and off the pitch with opportunities for all.

"But first and foremost, we can't wait to see him in the number 7 shirt of Al Nassr doing what he does best, scoring goals, winning titles and bringing joy to those who love the beautiful game."

Travellers entering Malaysia must go through fever screening - Dr Zaliha

Travellers entering Malaysia must go through fever screening - Dr Zaliha

30/12/2022 03:12 PM

PUTRAJAYA, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- All travellers arriving from abroad, including from China, must go through a fever screening at the International Entry Points (PMA) in Malaysia.

Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said if the travellers were detected to have a fever, being symptomatic or through self-declaration, will be referred to a quarantine centre or healthauthority for re-examination.

“If they were suspected of having COVID-19, the COVID-19 test would be carried out,” she said in a statement here today.

She said this was one of the four main strategies of the Ministry of Health (MOH) in improving preparedness to face any possible increase in cases and deaths due to the COVID-19pandemic in Malaysia as well as changes in the policy of COVID-19 management in China.

China recently announced major relaxation of its management of COVID-19 and the National Health Commission said that Beijing will stop requiring inbound travellers to go intoquarantine from Jan 8 amid the worrying increase in the cases and death toll.

As such, Dr Zaliha said surveillance measures at PMA will also be strengthened by taking aircraft sewage water samples from China.

“The sewage water samples will be sent to the National Public Health Laboratory for PCR testing and then sent for genome sequencing if detected positive for COVID-19,” she said.

In order to detect any new variants, she said all cases of diseases such as influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) patients seeking treatment athealth facilities and have a history of travel to China or contact with individuals from China within 154 days must undergo the RTK-Ag test.

She said the result of the RTK-Ag test would be sent for genome sequencing if detected for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha said the second strategy is by protecting the community through vaccination, including among the vulnerable and high-risk groups.

“Those who have yet to complete their primer or booster doses can fix an appointment for vaccination through the MySejahtera app or contact the nearest health clinic,” she said.

Dr Zaliha said the third strategy is to  improve the preparedness and response of the public health service system by strengthening the management of COVID-19 using theautomated Find, Test, Trace, Isolate, and Support (FTTIS) approach.

“Through this approach, individuals taking a COVID-19 self-test can report their test results into the MySejahtera app – in addition to doing the test at the health facility. The testresults will be immediately updated in the user's MySejahtera profile,” she said.

The minister said the fourth strategy is by ensuring the advocacy and risk communication activities related to COVID-19 including vaccination and treatment are enhanced at alllevels of society.

“Advocacy and health education materials can be obtained from the MOH website as well as the MOH press releases issued from time to time,” she said.

Dr Zaliha also said that Malaysia’s declaration of infected local areas, which was initially scheduled to end tomorrow, has been extended to June 30 next year to enable the ministryto carry out activities to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19.

“The extension has been gazetted on Dec 27 through the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Measures within the Infected Local Areas) (Extension of Operation) (No.2)Regulations 2022 (P.U. (A) 397/2022),” she said.

KUALA LUMPUR: The judgment debtor summons filed by a former member of the singing group 'Elite', Hana, against group member Watie, was today resolved amicably in the Selayang Sessions Court here.

Hana, as the judgment creditor, filed the suit to demand Watie, as the judgment debtor, to make payment for the overdue debt of over RM700,000 as ordered by the same court on Oct 25, 2017.

The consent judgment was recorded by Judge Nor Rajiah Mat Zin during the proceeding which was held in chambers. Present were lawyer Mohd Fikri Abd Rahman, representing Hana, and lawyer Aqila Zulaiqha Zulkifli, representing Watie, whose real name is Norwati Sadali.

Mohd Fikri, when met by reporters, said that both parties agreed to settle the case amicably and Norwati also agreed to settle the payment requested by Hana.

"The agreed amount is RM796,000, including interest, and Watie will pay in installments of more than RM2,000 a month. Watie will make the payment every month until the full payment is made," said the lawyer.

Mohd Fikri said Norwati would make the payment as previously ordered by the same court.

"The matter is finally resolved amicably to the agreed terms. I request that this case not be prolonged because my client (Hana) agreed to accept the amount proposed by Watie as payment," he added.

Hana, whose real name is Norhanasafiza Mat Adnan, filed the judgment debtor suit against Norwati on May 18, 2017, after the latter failed to pay her damages amounting to RM707,351.83.

In the debtor's suit, Norhanasafiza also sought the court to issue an arrest warrant if Norwati failed to appear in court to explain her failure to pay the debt.

On March 10, 2015, the Selayang Sessions Court allowed a summons suit by Norhanasafiza against Norwati and ordered the latter to pay damages of RM707,351.83.

Norhanasafiza filed the suit after Norwati failed to settle a bank loan, which used her (Norhanasafiza) name for the purchase of a Toyota Wish.

In the statement of claim, Norhanasafiza stated that she had obtained a loan for RM150,000 for the purchase of the car in September 2005 on behalf of Norwati because the latter was not eligible to apply for a loan.

However, she said, after getting the car, Norwati failed to comply with the stipulated conditions, including paying the loan installment since September 2010.

As a result, Norhanasafiza said she was declared bankrupt on April 1, 2013.

COVID-19: MATA urges govt to suspend entry of tourists from China

COVID-19: MATA urges govt to suspend entry of tourists from China

30/12/2022

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Tourism Agency Association (MATA) has urged the government to temporarily suspend the entry of tourists from China into the country until the daily cases of COVID-19 in China decrease.

MATA president Datuk Dr Mohd Khalid Harun said the recent significant surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in China has increased the potential for new variants of the virus to emerge, thus causing concerns to Malaysians, especially tourism industry players.

"We are all aware that hospitals across China are facing explosions of COVID-19 cases following Beijing's decision to withdraw their strict regulations.

"The trauma faced by players in the tourism industry due to the COVID-19 outbreak has yet to be resolved, in fact, many travel agencies and hotels have been closed due to the virus incurring billions of ringgit in losses in the past two years," he said in a statement today.

Therefore, Mohd Khalid said he hoped that it would not recur as tourism industry players are still in the process of recovery.

He said that many foreign countries have tightened the entry of tourists or businessmen from China for the time being to curb the spread of the COVID-19 outbreak in their countries.

He also advised industry players to shift their focus to tourists from the Middle East and Europe without relying on tourists from China for now.

Yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said Malaysia would see a surge in flight demand following the re-opening of China’s borders, which will be implemented by its government on Jan 8 after nearly three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Soccer star Pele, Brazilian legend of the beautiful game, dies at 82 | Top 10 Greatest Moments

REUTERS

SAO PAULO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Pele, the legendary Brazilian soccer player who rose from barefoot poverty to become one of the greatest and best-known athletes in modern history, died on Thursday at the age of 82.

Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein hospital, where Pele was undergoing treatment, said he died at 3:27 p.m. "due to multiple organ failures resulting from the progression of colon cancer associated with his previous medical condition."

The death of the only man to win the World Cup three times as a player was confirmed on his Instagram account.

"Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pele, who peacefully passed away today," it read, adding he had "enchanted the world with his genius in sport, stopped a war, carried out social works all over the world and spread what he most believed to be the cure for all our problems: love."

Tributes poured in from across the worlds of sport, politics and popular culture for a figure who epitomized Brazil's dominance of the beautiful game.

The government of President Jair Bolsonaro, who leaves office on Sunday, declared three days of mourning, and said in a statement that Pele was "a great citizen and patriot, raising the name of Brazil wherever he went."

Bolsonaro's successor, President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, wrote on Twitter that "few Brazilians carried the name of our country as far as he did."

French President Emmanuel Macron said Pele's legacy would live forever. "The game. The king. Eternity," Macron tweeted.

Pele had been undergoing chemotherapy since he had a tumor removed from his colon in September 2021.

He also had difficulty walking unaided since an unsuccessful hip operation in 2012. In February 2020, on the eve of the coronavirus pandemic, his son Edinho said Pele's ailing physical state had left him depressed.

On Monday, a 24-hour wake will be held for Pele in the center of the field at the stadium of Santos, his hometown club where he started playing as a teenager and quickly rose to fame.

The next day, a parade carrying his coffin will pass through the streets of Santos, passing the neighborhood where his 100-year-old mother lives, and ending at the Ecumenical Memorial Necropolis cemetery, where he will be buried in a private ceremony.

Pele, whose given name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento, joined Santos in 1956 and turned the small coastal club into one of the most famous names in football.

In addition to a host of regional and national titles, Pele won two Copa Libertadores, the South American equivalent of the Champions League, and two Intercontinental Cups, the annual tournament held between the best teams in Europe and South America.

He took home three World Cup winner's medals, the first time as a 17-year-old in Sweden in 1958, the second in Chile four years later - even though he missed most of the tournament through injury - and the third in Mexico in 1970, when he led what is considered to be one of the greatest sides ever to play the game.

He retired from Santos in 1974 but a year later made a surprise comeback by signing a lucrative deal to join the New York Cosmos in the then nascent North American Soccer League.

In a glorious 21-year career he scored between 1,281 and 1,283 goals, depending on how matches are counted.

Pele, though, transcended soccer, like no player before or since, and he became one of the first global icons of the 20th century.

With his winning smile and an aw-shucks humility that charmed legions of fans, he was better known than many Hollywood stars, popes or presidents – many if not most of whom he met during a six-decade-long career as player and corporate pitchman.

"I am sad, but I am also proud to be Brazilian, to be from Pele's country, a guy who was a great athlete," said Ciro Campos, a 49-year-old biologist in Rio de Janeiro. "And also off the field, he was a cool person, not an arrogant athlete."

Pele credited his one-of-a-kind mix of talent, creative genius and technical skill to a youth spent playing pick-up games in small-town Brazil, often using grapefruit or wadded-up rags because his family could not afford a real ball.

Pele was named "Athlete of the Century" by the International Olympic Committee, co-"Football Player of the Century" by world soccer body FIFA, and a "national treasure" by Brazil's government.

His celebrity was often overwhelming. Grown adults broke down crying in his presence with regularity. As a player, souvenir-seeking fans often rushed the field following games and tore off his shorts, socks and even underwear.

His house in Brazil was less than a mile from a beach, but he didn't go there for some two decades because of fear of crowds.

Yet even in unguarded moments among friends, he rarely complained. He believed that his talent was a divine gift, and he spoke movingly about how soccer allowed him to travel the world, bring cheer to cancer patients and survivors of wars and famine, and provide for a family that, growing up, often did not know the source of their next meal.

"God gave me this ability for one reason: To make people happy," he said during a 2013 interview with Reuters. "No matter what I did, I tried not to forget that."

Brazil's CBF soccer federation said "Pele was much more than the greatest sportsman of all time ... The King of Soccer was the ultimate exponent of a victorious Brazil."

Kylian Mbappé, the French star many view as the current best soccer player in the world, also offered his condolences.

"The king of football has left us but his legacy will never be forgotten," he wrote on Twitter. "RIP KING."
