KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has dismissed a defamation suit filed by former chief executive officer of a local telecommunications company, Jason Jonathan Lo, against the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) over two articles published in 2019 and 2020.

Judicial Commissioner (JC) Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan, in his decision delivered yesterday, ruled that the court found no malice in regard to the articles as claimed by the plaintiff (Jason).

"In regard to the first impugned article, reading as a whole would lead to the conclusion that the plaintiff was charged separately in different Magistrate's Courts with trespassing and injecting drugs. The court finds that after reading the first impugned article in its entirety, the plaintiff did not appear to have trespassed into a house only to inject drugs.

"Regarding the use of injecting drug into body, as opposed to consuming self-administering drugs, it is important to note that the first impugned article was only designed to inform the public that Jason had been charged with the drug offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"In fact, it was clear from the said article that the plaintiff had pleaded not guilty to both charges and had been released on bail," said Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin.

On the second impugned article, the court found that after reading the entire article, it appears from the very beginning that the plaintiff did not plead guilty to the charge and the article stated clearly that the plaintiff was accused of criminal breach of trust (CBT) but no assignment of guilt was made to him.

"Furthermore, the article specifically stated that the plaintiff had been released on RM30,000 bail. Reasonably, this would not conclude that the plaintiff admitted to this offence. Taking the entire article into account, it negates any understanding that the plaintiff confessed to the crime," he said.

He said that anyone reading the entire text would recognise that the plaintiff had only been charged but had not yet been proven of committing the crime.

"Reading the second article in full, the court finds that the act of reporting that Jason has been charged with certain offences and alleged to have committed a certain crime, cannot be defamatory," he said and ordered the plaintiff to pay RM15,000 in costs to the news agency.

The court made the ruling after hearing evidence from Jason as a plaintiff and three witnesses from the defendant.

The matter was confirmed by counsel Adam Luqman Amdan, representing Bernama.

PUTRAJAYA: The new system for the expatriate employment pass process, Xpats Gateway, will shorten the work permit application process from more than 80 days to just five working days, said Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli.

In a press conference after the Platform Meeting of the Special Task Force on Business Facilitation (Pemudah) Number 3/2023 here today, he said the system in question using a single window approach will start to be implemented in phases from 15 June.

"This integrated system concept is part of the government's efforts to reform the government system, so that it is more user-friendly and saves processing time in government affairs," he said.

Rafizi said phase one involves the development of the Xpats Gateway System by TalentCorp and for agencies that are ready to use the system, will start implementing it on June 15.

The second phase involves agencies such as the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), which already have existing systems and only need integration to enable it to be implemented by August 15 next.

Meanwhile, Rafizi said the Pemudah meeting today agreed that the country's cleaning and washing industry should be given a new lease of life through contract restructuring involving changing the contract method from one based on the number of employees to one based on performance.

"With performance-based contract implementation, contractors must comply with certain criteria including productivity improvement plans, innovation, and technology, in addition to other criteria and contractors will be evaluated according to monthly scores and will be paid according to the performance achieved," he said.

He said the government will start a pilot project of the new method, within the next two months in places with a big impact before implementing it nationwide.

"The restructuring of this contract method, is able to transform the industry into a highly skilled and technology-based industry, and attract the interest of local workers to be involved in the industry," he said.

A suspect in the 1MDB scandal has died weeks after being deported to Malaysia to face questioning over his role in the $4.5bn fraud.

Kee Kok Thiam died in hospital on Monday following a “sudden massive stroke” and was cremated on Wednesday morning, Kee’s family said in a statement.

“We urge all parties not to entertain any speculations on this unfortunate event and allow the family the space to grief [sic] on his passing,” the statement said.

News of the 56-year-old businessman’s death comes hours after Al Jazeera reported that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had confirmed the whereabouts of fugitive Malaysian financier Jho Taek Low – the alleged mastermind of the 1MDB scandal – in Macau based on its questioning of Kee.

The MACC said that Kee, who was deported from Macau earlier this month, revealed he had met with Low and other 1MDB fugitives in the Chinese territory and that Low had instructed him “not to return to Malaysia as a witness in the 1MDB case”.

Low disappeared in 2016 as authorities from Singapore to Australia and the United States closed in on the theft of billions of dollars from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund.

A source at the MACC, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Al Jazeera that Kee was not under the protection of authorities as he was still considered a suspect. The source said no negotiations had taken place as to information he would be willing to divulge to receive protection.

Kee was released without charge after being questioned by MACC officers earlier this month.

PETALING JAYA: The cause of death of an alleged accomplice of Low Taek Jho or Jho Low was due to a massive sudden stroke.

According to his lawyers, Kee Kok Thiam, a suspect in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal passed away in a hospital on May 29.

Based on a Malay Mail report, law firm Valen, Oh & Partners said: “Reference is made to media articles on Mr Kee’s passing away and the circumstances.

“We urge all parties not to entertain any speculation on this unfortunate event and allow the family the space to grieve on his passing,” said the legal firm today (May 31).

The daily was tipped off yesterday (May 30) after receiving an obituary that showed a wake service for Kee, and followed by a funeral service today at the Kepong Crematorium.

The 56-year-old had reportedly met Jho Low in Macau alongside a few other fugitives linked to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) controversy.

BANGKOK (May 29): Despite his young age of just 16, Muay Thai exponent Muhammad Johan Ghazali Zulfikar is fueled by an ambitious dream – to attain the prestigious ONE Championship contract of US$100,000 (RM460,553) and secure the highly coveted championship belt.

Continuing his remarkable journey in the ONE Championship, Muhammad Johan or better known as ‘Jojo’ delivered another awe-inspiring performance in the ONE Championship on Friday.

The young Sarawakian fighter left the crowd spellbound as he unleashed a spectacular knockout blow, leaving his opponent, Tai Sor Jor Piek Uthai, 24, a two-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai World Champion, stunned.

“My target is to get the ONE Championship contract of USD100,000 but my ultimate goal is to be ONE Championship champion,” he told Bernama.

Johan, who represents Rentap Muay Thai Club, also bagged 350,000 baht (RM46,000) for his second knockout in a row. In February, Johan stunned fans in his promotional debut where he took just 16 seconds to knockout his 18-year-old Thai opponent, Padetsuk Fairtex, in their flyweight clash.

“I feel that the ONE Championship belt is bound for me. I am the future,” he told the crowd at the Lumpinee Stadium after winning the fight.

Undeterred by the bleeding cut on his head and the persistent taunting from Tai, who provocatively stuck his tongue out, Johan’s punches continued to rain down with relentless force.

With a powerful left hook-right overhand combo, he delivered a devastating blow that left his opponent down and out.

“Aware of the bleeding cut, I was mindful that the referee could halt the fight at any moment. With that in mind, I exerted every ounce of my effort to secure a swift victory” he said.

On his ambition to secure the ONE Championship contract and belt, Johan spoke of the doubts of those who doubted his talents.

“Many years ago, people deemed my dream of competing in the ONE Championship as grandiose. That dream has become a reality.

“Now, I pursue new goals. I understand that skepticism may arise once again. Nevertheless, I am fully committed to giving my absolute best and proving those skeptics wrong,” he said.

He thanked his parents and coach Addy Singpayak for their unwavering support through the highs and lows of his journey in the last six years. — Bernama

PENANG A SOVEREIGN STATE WITH INDISPUTABLE LEGALITY - RAMKARPAL

PENANG A SOVEREIGN STATE WITH INDISPUTABLE LEGALITY - RAMKARPAL

30/05/2023

09:50 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- Penang is a sovereign state in the Federation of Malaysia and its legal position cannot be disputed.

Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Ramkarpal Singh stated that since British rule, Penang has been acknowledged as a straits state under the grouping known as the Straits Settlements.

“Subsequently, several agreements signed between Kedah and the British had also clearly acknowledged Penang and Province Wellesley (mainland Penang) as a sovereign state.

“The agreements include the Agreement between His Britannic Majesty’s Government and the State of Kedah, 1923; the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1948 dan the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957,” he said in a statement, adding that Kedah Menteri Besar Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor’s claim that Penang belonged to Kedah was baseless.

Muhammad Sanusi was reported to have claimed yesterday that Kedah and Penang had no borders as Penang belonged to Kedah and that Kedah had borders with only Perak and Perlis.

Ramkarpal said the Federation of Malaya Agreement 1957 also clearly stated that Penang was a part of the Federated States of Malaya as a separate state from Kedah.

Detailing the matter, he said the formation of the Federated States of Malaya was based on the Federal Constitution of 1957 and it was undeniable that Penang was acknowledged as a state under the Federated States of Malaya in Article 1(2) of the Federal Constitution.

Furthermore, Article 71(1) of the Federal Constitution, which is read together with Schedule Eight of the Constitution also guarantees every state has their own state constitution that provides ways to manage the state government, including Penang.

“In addition, there are other provisions in the Federal Constitution that states that Penang is a sovereign state since the formation of the Federated States of Malaya and the Federation of Malaysia.

“No objection was ever raised by any party, including the Kedah state government, that Penang was owned by Kedah,” he said.

As such, the Federal Constitution, which is the highest law of the country, must be respected by all Malaysians.

PUTRAJAYA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the arrest of a South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar) officer, believed to be in connection with a recent criminal breach of trust case, can affect the image of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW).

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the ministry will not compromise on the aspect of integrity.

He said such misconduct must be prevented from recurring because the ministry is an agency that is close to the people, especially those in rural areas.

"Just because of one person, the perception of the organisation will turn negative. We cannot compromise on issues regarding integrity involving corruption, breach of trust, embezzlement or personal interests," he said during his speech at the KKDW 2022 Excellent Service and Appreciation ceremony, here, today.

On Saturday (May 27), the media reported the arrest of an assistant accountant of Kesedar, an agency under KKDW, to assist in investigations into a criminal breach of trust case involving a loss of RM24.8 million.

Preliminary investigations found that the act was carried out from 2016 to May 2023 involving 194 money transactions from Kesedar's Development Fund and Trust Fund accounts to the accounts of companies owned by the suspect, totalling RM24,800,189.73.

While praising the achievements of the KKDW since he took over the ministry seven months ago, Ahmad Zahid said the momentum must be maintained and improved to ensure it is one of the best ministries.

"I hope all of you in KKDW will continue to maintain the culture and momentum of excellence to ensure the ministry continues to excel and becomes a driver of change in developing communities in the villages," he said.

He also urged high-performing employees to help their low-performing colleagues to emulate their good work practices and characteristics in carrying out their tasks.

"This can be done via mentoring as well as guidance from supervisors, department heads and high-performing officers in the organisation," he said.

- BERNAMA

PUTRAJAYA: An allocation of RM20 million to every state for the purpose of building a drag race circuit as proposed by former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob would not be sufficient since the cost of maintenance would incur a big budget while aspects of security must also be given priority.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said the allocation tabled by the previous government in the previous 2023 Budget was never debated and approved in Parliament and in fact there was also no input from the Ministry of Youth and Sports for the proposed project.

"Not only funds but to built a drag race circuit, a large plot of land is needed and approved by the respective state governments. In the current political situation, we have state governments that are headed by different parties.

"Therefore how can such an announcement be made and there be expectations for a rollout...not possible. The aspects of safety to drivers involved in motorsport is also very important to KBS.

"If just build a drag race circuit and safety aspects not taken into account and cost of maintenance not considered, it will not be a conducive environment for our young motorsport drivers," Hannah told reporters after attending a Cabinet Committee Meeting for Sports Development, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, here today.

Hannah added that despite the predicaments involving the drag circuit proposal, KBS will ensure motorsport will continue to be given attention whereby this year, there is a budget for motorsport programmes implemented by the Youth and Sports Department while the Sepang International Circuit will also receive an allocation to carry out programmes and upgrading purposes.

Speaking of the 'Road to Gold' (RTG) programme for badminton which is aimed at winning the country's first ever gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Hannah said there would be no changes in the list of players even though the world ranking of some players may drop, including National players who were shown the early exit in the Malaysia Masters.

The terms set to qualify for the RTG programme remains clear (that is former Olympic medallists and players who are in the top 10 ranking of the world in their respective sport).

"There are no badminton players in and out of the RTG programme because the qualifying terms are clear. To make it to the RTG programme, the athlete must be ranked among the top 10 in the world," she said.

Hannah added that dropping an athlete from the RTG programme is not easy because it requires discussions and advice from the technical advisors like Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, Josiah Ng and Datuk Lee Chong Wei.

Currently, the world ranking shows that National men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia is ranked world number 10, men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik at world number three and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi are at world number seven.

National women's champions Pearly Tan-M Thinaah are currently world number 11 but their ranking is expected to improve after emerging as runner-up in the Malaysia Masters.

Currently badminton players dominate the RTG programme with Zii Jia, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yii, Pearly Tan-M Thinaah, Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai (mixed doubles).

Apart from badminton, former Olympics silver medallist Datuk Azizulhasni Awang, Muhammad Shah Firdaus Sahrom (track cycling), Datuk Pandelela Rinong and Nur Dhabitah Sabri (diving) are also in the RTG programme.

PETALING JAYA: Actor Farid Kamil has refused to divorce his wife, actress Diana Danielle at the Subang Bistari Lower Syariah Court here.

Syarie Judge Shukran Yusof said the report of the Conciliatory Committee (JKP) revealed a shiqaq or a prolonged dispute where both parties failed to reconcile and advised Farid to utter the talak (pronouncement of divorce) to his wife if he is ready but he refused.

"Because the defendant (Farid) disagreed (to utter talak), the court hereby orders this divorce case to continue with arbitration and the court set June 15 for the parties to appoint the hakam (arbitrators)," said Shukran.

Diana's counsel, syarie lawyer Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader said since the outcome of the JKP report was negative, his party requested Farid (defendant) to utter the talak.

"If the defendant (Farid) refuses to pronounce talaq, we go to the next stage, which is hakam (arbitration)," he said.

Farid's lawyer Fakhrul Azman Abu Hassan objected to the hakam process as he was of the view that shiqaq did not occur, which was opposed by Akberdin who argued that the JKP report stated that shiqaq did occur as the couple had different opinions about their household and had not been living together since March.

The celebrity couple attended today's proceeding and Farid was accompanied by his parents Datuk Dr Zahari Che Dan and Datin Sharifah Bardah Syed Abdillah.

On March 10, Diana filed for divorce from Farid under Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003 on the grounds that they have irreconcilable differences and there was a shiqaq and could no longer live together as husband and wife.

MACC believes Jho Low is hiding in Macau - Report

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) believes that fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho or Jho Low is hiding in Macau.

Quoting AlJazeera's report, the MACC in a written response said it believed that the individuals wanted in connection with the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case were in Macau, especially Jho Low.

"This is also confirmed by several individuals who have seen Jho Low in Macau," MACC said in a report published by the news portal on Tuesday.

This is what the MACC clarified a few weeks after an individual allegedly involved in the investigation of the 1MDB and SRC International Sdn Bhd (SRC) case was reported to have been brought back to this country through MACC's cooperation with external enforcement agencies in early May.

AlJazeera also reported that the suspect, Kee Kok Thiam, arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on May 3 before being arrested by the MACC.

However, the suspect was released following an interview with MACC officers and no charges have been brought against him "at this time".

The MACC also said in the report that the Malaysian government did not receive any notification from Macau regarding the deportation of Kok Thiam, but knew that he was deported from Macau based on an "intelligence network".

"Investigation papers focused on the assets belonging to Kee Kok Thiam in Singapore and have been completed and sent to the Attorney General's office for follow-up action," quoted an official in the AlJazeera report.

Immediately after arriving in Kuala Lumpur, Kok Thiam revealed to MACC officials that Macau immigration detained him for a month in 2021 but released him "conditionally" when the Macau border was closed due to the COVID-19 restrictions, according to the report.

MACC also informed that Kok Thiam confirmed that he met Jho Low and several other fugitive 1MDB suspects including Eric Tan Kim Loong, Casey Tang Keng Chee, Geh Choh Heng and Nik Faisal in Macau.

In fact, MACC said, Jho Low had instructed Kok Thiam not to "return to Malaysia as a witness in the 1MDB case".

In early May, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia was negotiating with several countries through diplomatic channels to speed up the process of bringing Jho Low home.

However, when asked if the negotiations involved China, PM Anwar said he could not comment on it.

BRUSSELS: Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that there has been no discussion on a cabinet reshuffle.

"I have not heard anything about it. There is no discussion about that. That is the sole prerogative of the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim)," he said when asked about talks of an imminent cabinet reshuffle.

"I'm a working man. I follow orders," Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Plantation and Commodities, told Malaysian media here today.

He reiterated that Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is committed to ensuring a strong and stable government.

"We from GPS have given our commitment, and what we need now is a strong and stable government.

Only political stability and good governance would attract investors, said Fadillah, who is the GPS parliamentary chief whip.

"This is paramount as far as Sarawak is concerned, and that has been our commitment as far as this Unity Government is concerned," he noted.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here today allowed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) application for leave to commence judicial review proceedings to challenge the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) decision to freeze its bank accounts for investigation and the travel ban by the Immigration Department against its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid ruled that the applicants have passed the threshold to commence judicial review proceedings and there are triable issues regarding the impugned freezing order and travel ban.

"These triable issues justify further argument by the parties at the substantive stage and cannot be obliterated by the court at this stage," he said.

The judge also said Bersatu's application to initiate judicial review was not frivolous and vexatious.

"I am of the view that the application is amenable to judicial review and accordingly the leave to commence judicial review is hereby allowed," said Judge Ahmad Kamal.

Judge Ahmad Kamal however disallowed the party's interim order application for the release of funds from Bersatu's accounts as it would interfere with MACC's investigation.

"At this stage, the granting of such interim orders or interim reliefs would amount to interference in the power of the MACC in exercising its power to make a variation order.

"Therefore, it is my considered opinion that the release of money which is or could be connected with the money laundering offences cannot be permitted," he said.

He further said the release of money, if permitted, will diminish the frozen assets (the money in the bank account), as the purpose of the freezing order is to preserve the assets suspected of criminal activities.

"Permitting such release of money will frustrate the purpose of the freezing order which is yet to be determined in the criminal trials," he said.

In the interim application, Bersatu had sought to withdraw RM1 million for the operation, management, salaries, costs, other expenses and purpose of the political activities of Bersatu.

It also sought the release of RM6 million from its accounts for the purpose of campaign activities in the upcoming six state elections and another RM1 million for necessary expenses.

On the issue of the travel ban, Judge Ahmad Kamal said subsequent upliftment of the travel ban is not academic as the court has to look into the travel ban as a whole and not in isolation.

"Besides, the travel ban also has an element of public interest to demand the court to look into the matter substantively as Muhyiddin, being the preceding Prime Minister of Malaysia has a certain standing in the country," he said adding that the issue of the legality of the travel ban touched fundamental liberty enshrined in the Federal Constitution which warranted substantive hearing by this court.

Judge Ahmad Kamal set June 21 for case management before fixing a separate date to hear the merits of the judicial review.

On March 8, Capt (R) Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya, as a public officer of Bersatu, and Muhyiddin as the Bersatu president filed the application naming MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and 19 others as the first to 20th respondents.

Senior federal counsel Ahmad Hanir Hambaly appeared for the government while counsel Rosli Dahlan appeared for Bersatu.

KL TO BECOME REGIONAL HUB FOR DIGITAL INDUSTRY AND START-UPS - RAFIZI

KL TO BECOME REGIONAL HUB FOR DIGITAL INDUSTRY AND START-UPS -

RAFIZI

Credit: FB - Rafizi Ramli

29/05/2023 12:14 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- The government plans to make Kuala Lumpur a regional hub for start-up companies and the digital industry in an effort to boost the country’s digital economic activities.

Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said the digital economy is one of the three high-value strategic sectors and is capable of stimulating investment and offering highpaying jobs to the people that the ministry is focusing on in the restructuring of the national economy.

“Apart from boosting existing industries such as semi-conductors, manufacturing, oil and gas, and commodities to the higher value chain level with a focus on the process of higher value downstreaming, the three strategic sectors that the Economy Ministry is focusing on are energy transition towards renewable energy, digital economy and food security,” he said in a statement here.

Therefore, he said, the ministry is currently collaborating with other ministries involved in the digital economy ecosystem, namely the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation; Ministry of Communications and Digital; and the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry to boost the country's digital economy.

He said the collaboration was necessary to coordinate the public support system implemented through various agencies towards an integrated approach (single window approach) to improve the digital ecosystem.

“This will increase the number and performance of start-ups as well as accelerate the transition of the private sector to the digital economy,” he said.

He added that the cooperation with the involved ministries also aims to start the development of concepts and coordination of functions between government agencies towards the implementation of the digital government (govtech) which produces integrated data-based and digital public service products (single window's govtech).

“One key step to achieve these two targets is to increase the attractiveness of Kuala Lumpur as a centre for start-up companies and the regional digital industry to attract investment and digital talent to the country.

”It requires aggressive policy changes that cover various areas, including the consolidation of the efforts of government agencies, a more efficient and open work visa process, more attractive digital incentives and the production of workforce in the digital industry on a national scale,” he said.

According to Rafizi, while attending the Qatar Economic Forum recently, he had the opportunity to discuss with Jack Selby who was the earliest employee of PayPal along with the founding group of the company such as Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and Reid Hoffman.

“This group of PayPal founders became the main force that moved the digital industry from the Silicon Valley through their involvement in well-known digital companies including Tesla, SpaceX, Youtube, Facebook, LinkedIn and OpenAI,” he explained.

Rafizi said Selby, who is now the managing director of Thiel Capital and the originator of the Arizona Technology Innovation Summit, also expressed  interest in helping Malaysia develop Kuala Lumpur as a regional centre for start-ups and the digital industry.

“I was interested in partnering with him in the digital field because of his efforts to develop Arizona as a new centre for startups outside of Silicon Valley and after a career in Silicon Valley, he returned to his home state of Arizona and developed Arizona as a new centre for startups, which has now succeeded in attracting start-up companies.

“His expertise will help the country formulate policies that are more friendly to start-up companies and create collaboration networking in the digital field that will boost Kuala Lumpur’s name as the main destination for the digital industry in the region,” he said.

He said specific policies and initiatives will be announced in stages in the move to make Kuala Lumpur an attraction for regional start-ups.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd's (TNB) net profit jumped 12.2 percent to RM1 billion in the first quarter ending March 31, 2023 from RM893.10 million in the same quarter last year.

The increase was mostly due to lower tax provisions recognized in the quarter under review, as a result of the use of higher reinvestment allowance incentives, the utility company said in a notification to Bursa Malaysia today.

Meanwhile, revenue increased 3.9 percent to RM12.63 billion from RM12.15 billion previously due to higher electricity sales.

TNB said operating expenses increased by 7.5 per cent to RM14.44 billion from RM13.43 billion, mostly on the back of higher generation costs leading to a higher Imbalance in Route Costs (ICPT) under recognized recovery in the quarter.

However, there was a net reversal in the impairment of financial instruments amounting to RM48.7 million recognized in the current period due to an increase in collection flows.

"As a result, TNB recorded a lower operating profit of RM2.08 billion, a decrease of RM287.5 million from the previous period," he said.

On the outlook, TNB said it expects a reasonable performance for 2023 as selpeas enjoyed a better first quarter earnings from electricity demand growth of 0.8 percent and will continue to be cautious of upcoming challenges including high fuel prices and inflation.

"The group will continue to take prudent measures in terms of its operational and financial needs to ensure it remains resilient," he said.
