KUALA LUMPUR, 22 MAY: The vehicle registration number bid for the "FF" series recorded the highest collection result in the history of the JPJeBid bidding system with collection amounting to RM34.3 million.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said 34,032 people participated in the bid, which was open from May 14 to 19 last year, with 8,348 of them successfully obtaining serial number plates.
He said the number plate that got the highest bid was FF8 with a price of RM950,000, followed by FF9 (RM911,999), FF3 (RM639,000) and FF2 (RM638,000).
"The five numbers that received the most interest were FF199 with a total of 34 bidders, FF51 with 32 bidders and then FF155, FF555 and FF1688 with 29 bidders each.
"The total participation of bidders and winners for this FF series also recorded the highest participation since the JPJeBid online application was launched on 15 April 2019," he said at a press conference in the lobby of the Parliament Buildings, here today.
Loke said the bidding was so overwhelming that the system failed last Thursday due to high traffic, forcing the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to extend the bidding period for 24 hours.
He apologized for the inconvenience and admitted that there are things that need to be improved to ensure the smoothness of the system.
Responding to the claim that the three numbers with the highest bid value were won by the same individual which went viral on social media, Loke said it would not be a problem if true as each bidder could bid up to three numbers in a series.
"As long as he follows the rules and makes the highest bid, then he gets (the number plate). We do not look at the buyer's background," he said.
