Biopic Anwar: The Untold Story raked in RM1 million on opening day on Thursday.
The film directed by Viva Westi and starring Farid Kamil Zahari as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim opened in over 1000 screens across 120 cinemas across Malaysia.
Distributor DMY Creation Chairman Datuk Mohamed Yusoff said he was surprised the film performed so well in Malaysian cinemas, especially opening alongside blockbusters like Fast X,
The film, which has been in the works since August 2011, has been completed and is ready to be shown.
The time set of this film is from 1993 to September 1998, which is when Anwar started serving as Minister of Finance until he was fired.
Adapted from a true story, the storyline is about Anwar's firm and consistent attitude of refusing various types of remuneration and cash from certain parties.
Also, how he refused to use the people's money to bail out a certain leader's daughter company that lost billions of ringgit.
Because of that he was slandered with a big conspiracy, fired, brutally beaten in a lockup and left without medical treatment for several days.
