KUALA LUMPUR: Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has enough support from some 146,000 Umno delegates who voted today to choose the party’s top leaders.

With some 90% of the 191 divisional votes counted, Zahid leads comfortably against his closest rival Khairy Jamaluddin.

Meanwhile, veteran Umno leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah trails far behind, receiving only about 12% of the total divisional votes.

Zahid was the acting deputy president before he took over duties from Najib, who quit as president just days after Umno’s worst defeat in the general election last month.

He was appointed as the deputy prime minister in 2015, after Muhyiddin Yassin was sacked by Najib from the Cabinet following their fallout over 1MDB.

Zahid, a former aide to Najib when the latter was the Umno Youth chief in the eighties, had also served as deputy tourism minister, minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, defence minister and home minister.

As the Umno Youth chief, he was among those seen as critical of Dr Mahathir Mohamad during the 1997 general assembly, just a year before then deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim was dramatically sacked sparking protests in Kuala Lumpur.

MALAYSIA’S biggest money laundering probe began last week, with some 1,000 names being investigated, including former prime minister Najib Razak, his wife, Rosmah Mansor, and the wider Razak clan, sources said.

The list includes a number of Barisan Nasional (BN) politicians suspected to have been paid with the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) monies found in Najib’s bank accounts, top civil servants, businessmen and lawyers.

“It is a long, long list. The usual suspects and a host of family members, relatives, politicians, top civil servants, etc… almost 1,000 names,” said a lawyer familiar with the probe.

The Malaysian Insight learned that the police have written to all financial institutions in the country to get information under Section 48 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Under this section, the public prosecutor can authorise investigators to obtain information on banking records, shares, expense accounts, inspect the contents of any safe deposit box and request any other kind of information.

“This isn’t a case of getting warrants. This is the authorities having the power to summon bankers and asking for the information,” said another source.

It is understood that the list of those being investigated is similar to the list of those who had received money from Najib’s five AmBank Islamic banking accounts in a series of transactions in late 2014.

Some of the lawyers being investigated have acted in several suits for Najib as well as for Umno when Najib was party president and prime minister.

Among those who have admitted to receiving money from Najib are his brother, Nazir, who is CIMB Group chairman, and former Felda chairman Shahrir Samad.

Whistleblower site Sarawak Report reported in August 2015 that Shahrir received RM1 million after the 2013 general election while then Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan received a cheque for RM2 million.

Najib, who has denied any wrongdoing, is now under investigation by a slew of authorities, including the police and Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), for offences related to the 1MDB scandal.

He has also denied any knowledge of money from 1MDB unit SRC International turning up in his bank accounts, saying the accounts were handled by Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, who was SRC International chief executive.

The recent turn of events came after BN’s shocking and historic defeat in the May 9 polls to Pakatan Harapan led by Najib’s mentor-turned-nemesis Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Dr Mahathir is prime minister again 15 years after stepping down from the job, and he has not lost any time pursuing those involved in the 1MDB scheme, which has cost Malaysia some RM53 billion. – June 25, 2018.

Envoys told to return to Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: Several heads of mission appointed by the previous government have been told to relinquish their positions and return home.

Malaysian ambassador to Indonesia Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohamed Hashim is returning to Malaysia today as his stint ends the same day.

An embassy source said Zahrain had made all his preparations to leave Jakarta a month ago.

“His bags are all packed, some are already in a container on its way to Kuala Lumpur,” said the source.

Zahrain, the former Bayan Baru MP, was a PKR member but he quit the party following a tiff with then Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng over the latter’s proposal to use a RM2 company to operate and manage Bukit Jambul Golf & Country Club.

He then became Barisan Nasional friendly and rejoined Umno two years later. He did not stand in the 2013 general election but was appointed as the ambassador a few months after the polls.

Sources in the Foreign Affairs Ministry said the contract of Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, Malaysia’s first ambassador to the Vatican, was terminated on June 7, but allowing him a grace period ending today.

It is believed that he will be returning to Malaysia in another week.

The former Sabah chief minister was appointed for two years from March 2016. His political appointment was extended for another two years until April 18, 2020.

He had also held Cabinet positions as minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and plantation industries and commodities minister.

Sources added that other political appointees on the chopping block are ambassador to Finland Puan Sri Blanche O’Leary, Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre in Taiwan president Datuk Adeline Leong (pic)and the High Commissioner to Brunei Datuk Ghulam Jelani Khanizaman.

O’Leary is the wife of former MyPPP president Tan Sri M. Kayveas while Leong was former Sandakan Municipal Council president.

Ghulam was the permanent secretary of Sabah’s Ministry of Rural Development prior to his appointment in Brunei.

Sources also said that Leong and Ghulam were close to former Sabah chief minister Tan Sri Musa Aman and his brother, former foreign affairs minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.

Meanwhile, former ambassador to the United States Tan Sri Zulhasnan Rafique resigned on April 23 before the general election.

He contested the Setiawangsa parliamentary seat but lost to PKR’s Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Former ambassador to Cambodia Datuk Seri Hasan Malek also resigned prior to the May 9 polls to contest the Kuala Pilah parliamentary seat.

He lost to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia’s Eddin Syazlee Shith by 200 votes.

His last day with the embassy in Phnom Penh was March 31.

NO more big salaries for those appointed to head government-linked companies but they will be rewarded with a “big bonus” if they perform.

“We found those appointed were chosen not because of their abilities in business or management, but due to being party supporters.

“They were inefficient but were paid high salaries. We found projects under them had failed or were not profitable,” Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad told the Malaysian media at the end of his two-day visit to Jakarta on an Asean tour.

When asked to name the GLCs, he declined, saying there were too many

“There are 17,000 appointees who have no ability and are just party supporters.”

Dr Mahathir said the Pakatan Government needed to replace these CEOs with ones not linked to any political parties.

“We will hire, where possible, professionals to run the companies and we will get the ones with experience in managing companies.”

Asked if the Government will review the salaries of heads of the GLCs because some were allegedly paid RM10mil in gross salary, Dr Mahathir said the ones to be appointed will not get big salaries.

“Their salaries will not be big. They will be paid bonus and the bonus will be big.”

On the new ministers to be sworn in on Monday, Dr Mahathir reminded those who were involved in corrupt acts or abused their power that they would be “moved out”.

“At any time (they are involved), action will be taken,” he added.

PETALING JAYA: Following the retirement of Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar as chairman of Permodalan Nasional Bhd (PNB), the attention is now directed towards the top officials in Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH) and Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT).
Sources said that among the government-linked companies (GLCs), these two organisations are expected to see changes following the change of government in Putrajaya.
LTH is headed by its group managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) Datuk Seri Johan Abdullah, while LTAT’s chieftain is Tan Sri Lodin Wok Kamaruddin, who is also Boustead Holdings Bhd’s deputy chairman and group managing director.
In 2015, LTH purchased a 1.55-acre parcel in the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) project from scandal-ridden 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) – sparking claims that the deal was done to bail out 1MDB.

More heads expected to roll in GLCs

in a statement yesterday, PNB said former Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz will replace Wahid as PNB’s chairman effective July 1.
In a separate statement, Wahid said the appointment of Zeti as PNB’s new chairman will enable a smooth transition of the leadership of the board of directors to ensure that investment and operations of the PNB Group are not affected.
“I believe Zeti and members of the board will be able to continue leading PNB to a higher level of success,” he said.
Wahid’s resignation follows a slew of changes in the top brass of GLCs – which forms part of the reform programmes of the new government under Pakatan Harapan.
The heads started rolling on May 14 when Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad stepped down from his position as the chairman of the politically-linked Federal Land Development Authority (Felda).
On the same day, Tan Sri Irwan Serigar Abdullah’s contract as Treasury secretary-general was cut short, and subsequently he was transferred to the Public Service Department. Irwan has since stepped down from board positions of companies under the Finance Ministry.
The following week saw LTH’s Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahim relinquish his position as chairman.
Then came the resignation of Bank Negara governor Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim after having served about two years since his appointment in April 2016.
His resignation came weeks after questions were raised over the central bank’s purchase of land to bail out 1MDB.
Other key resignations related to GLCs in recent times included that of Telekom Malaysia Bhd’s group CEO Datuk Seri Mohammed Shazalli Ramly and Habibul Rahman, who sat on the board of Malaysia Airlines.
Last week, Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd (MRCB)’s Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din, the developer of KL Sentral, announced his retirement.
Notably, Salim’s son Mohd Imran Mohamad Salim has taken over the MRCB group MD role.
MRCB has also restructured its board by redesignating Tan Sri Azlan Zainol as independent chairman.
Additionally, Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) independent non-executive director Datuk Mohd Omar Mustapha had also tendered his resignation on June 1.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan had stepped down from his position as the chairman of Petronas, while Bursa Malaysia CEO Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan could also be replaced before his term ends in March next year.

RAWANG: A video of a man being run over by a motorbike and being kicked in the head, allegedly in a dispute over football, is making its rounds on social media and messaging apps.

A message accompanying the video states that the victim was stripped of his trousers, beaten, slashed and kicked by at least 30 alleged gang members as he was on his way to a convenience shop in Country Homes here.

The video shows a man riding a motorcycle over the victim who is lying on the road, before another man approaches and brutally stomps on the head of the already-defenceless victim several times.

Another man is then seen telling both assaulters to back off and leads them away from the victim, just as another man on a motorcycle who is seen gesturing in the 34-second video rides away.

KUALA LUMPUR: The King Cup brand canned sardines are not among the products removed from the market under an order from the health ministry.

Marushin Canneries (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd’s administrative and human resource manager Josephine Loo clarified this today in a statement.

She said the health ministry’s statement clearly stated that the company’s Mackerel in Tomato Sauce was among the products recalled — not King Cup: Sardines in Tomato Sauce.

A ministry statement yesterday said three brands of canned sardines and three of canned mackerel were found to have worms in them.

As such, the ministry ordered the products to be withdrawn from the market, the statement said.

Najib’s ex-aide brought MACC to Jho Lo’s ‘secret’ KL home

FREE MALAYSIA TODAY

It is believed that the unit was used by the fugitive businessman to conduct 'secret meetings'.

The special officer to Najib was the one who informed MACC and police that all 1MDB secret meetings were held at the unit.

KUALA LUMPUR: The raid this afternoon at an apartment owned by fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho was based on information provided by a former aide to Najib Razak, said a source.

The man, a Datuk in his early forties, is currently under custody of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“The special officer to Najib was the one who informed MACC and police.

“He informed police that all 1MDB secret meetings were held and discussed in Jho Low ‘s unit at this residential building at Kia Peng,” said the source.

Officers this afternoon broke into the apartment in Jalan Kia Peng, as part of an investigation into Low, also known as Jho Low.

A warrant issued by MACC said “there are logical reasons to suspect that information on offences under the MACC Act 2009 could be available at the premises”.

Low and four others, are wanted by MACC over allegations that some US$4.5 billion was siphoned from 1MDB between 2009 and 2015.

Earlier this month, the commission requested Low to come forward to assist in investigations into SRC International, a previous subsidiary of 1MDB.

MACC has also asked former SRC managing director Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil Nik Othman, 47, to help with investigations, while urging mystery man Tan Kim Loong, who is alleged to be the signatory for numerous bank accounts overseas, where billions of ringgit originating from 1MDB were laundered, to also assist.

It was earlier reported that Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had rejected an offer for Malaysian investigators to grill Low in Dubai.

Six more brands of canned fish contaminated with worms
Friday, 29 Jun 20189:06 AM MYT

PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry has found six more brands of canned sardines to be contaminated with roundworms.

This comes after two canned sardine brands from China - TL Tan Lung and TLC - were recalled after they were found to be contaminated with roundworms.

"The Health Ministry through the food safety and quality division has been monitoring imported canned fish (sardine and mackerel) in the local market," said Health director-general Datuk Seri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement on Thursday (June 28).

Apart from the recalled TL Tan Lung and TLC brand canned sardines, the Ministry found six more canned fish brands that were also contaminated with roundworms.

The six products contaminated with roundworms are canned sardine brands from Cinta, Sea Fresh and HS Brand as well as mackerel fish in tomato sauce from the King Cup, Star Cup and TC Boy brands.

The Ministry said the worms are from the genus Anisakis spp, which causes the anisakiasis disease in humans that normally occurs when humans eat seafood such as raw or not fully cooked fish infected with the Anisakis spp parasite.

Anisakiasis is a parasitic and zoonotic disease brought about by a congenital fish causing the nematode (worm) that attacks the gastrointestinal system such as the stomach and intestines of humans and can cause gastrointestinal problems or symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.

However, Dr Noor Hisham assured that the health risk in the contaminated canned fish products is "very low" because the worms would have died during the cooking process.

"The Ministry has taken action against the companies involved and has ordered the products to be withdrawn from the market," said Dr Noor Hisham.

He said the Ministry has imposed a "Seize, Test and Release" action on the imported canned fish products at all entry points to Malaysia.

The "Seize, Test and Release" action is where samples will be taken for analysis and the product will only be released if the results finds that there is no contamination.

"Meanwhile for all locally produced canned fish products, the Ministry will carry out inspections at all production plants," said Dr Noor Hisham.

If consumers have any concerns or complaints regarding food security, they can contact the State Health Department or the nearest District Health Office. Consumers can also contact the Health Ministry through their website or Facebook, or the Ministry's Safety and Food Quality Division's Facebook page.

News of Re-Opening of Altantuya Murder Investigations Goes Viral Worldwide Again After 12 Years. I  25 June 2018

JAKARTA: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced the retrial of the 2006 murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Talk of reopening the murder case emerged after Altantuya’s family lawyer Ramkarpal Singh had said Attorney General Tommy Thomas gave “positive” signs that the case would be probed again following the emergence of new leads.

On the new leads, Ramkarpal said he was “not at liberty” to reveal what they are.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim last week said that the police may set up a committee to oversee fresh investigations into Altantuya's murder.

Altantuya, 28, is believed to have been shot dead before her body was blown to bits with explosives at a secondary forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam, in 2006.

Former Special Action Force personnel Sirul Azhar Umar, together with fellow colleague Azilah Hadri, were convicted of Altantuya’s murder and sentenced to death.

Sirul fled to Australia and is currently under detention by the country’s immigration department.

Australia does not allow a person on death row to return to their home country.Abdul Razak Baginda, a close associate of Najib, was charged with abetment for the murder but was later acquitted.

Friday, 29 Jun 2018

PUTRAJAYA: The probe into 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) has extended into Umno as investigators go on the money trail of billions that have gone unaccounted from the fund.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) froze the bank accounts of the Umno headquarters and Selangor Umno.

Key party officials are in the dark as to why the accounts were frozen.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi gave assurance that he was trying to prove that the party’s money was legitimate and not involved in any money laundering activities.

“Umno will give our full cooperation to the MACC in the wake of the commission freezing the bank accounts of its headquarters and other accounts,” said Dr Ahmad Zahid in a statement yesterday.

Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is assuming the duties of Umno president, said that he will not tolerate any attempt to intimidate and discriminate against Umno.

Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the party’s legal team would find out from the authorities as to why the accounts had been frozen.

MACC sources said these were done in relation to the investigations into 1MDB, and the decision to do so was taken “recently”.

“We can confirm that the accounts have been frozen but we are not at liberty to discuss the matter,” said a source in MACC.

It is not certain if the accounts of other state Umno would suffer the same fate.

“We can’t comment on that also,” said the source.

Former party president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is subject to investigations following the 1MDB scandal where the fund took on borrowings of close to RM42bil within five years from 2009.

According to investigations in the US, Singapore and Switzerland, a sizeable sum was traced to individuals from Malaysia and the Middle East.

Among them is Low Taek Jho, better known as Jho Low, who is linked to Najib.

Najib himself is facing allegations of some US$681mil (RM2.6bil) going into his account in 2013 before the 13th General Election.

Apart from that, MACC is also investigating some RM42mil going into the former prime minister’s account from SRC International Ltd, a former subsidiary of 1MDB.

Tengku Adnan said the MACC froze the accounts of the party around noon yesterday and he immediately informed Dr Ahmad Zahid.

“I was the one who told (Dr Ahmad) Zahid that our accounts cannot be accessed and that it has been frozen. Of course, we were shocked by this,” he told The Star.

Tengku Adnan did not specify the amount of money kept in the party’s accounts.

According to an Umno official, political parties kept millions in fixed deposits as stable source of income. In the case of Umno, sources say it could easily be in the region of RM350mil or more.

“The party would need at least RM25mil to run the organisation every year. The income has to come from some steady sources of investments, and fixed deposits is one of the channels,” said the official who held a high position under Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s administration.

Admitting that the move by the anti-graft authorities would make it financially tough for Umno administratively and for it to conduct activities, Tengku Adnan believed the matter could be resolved.

“We accept their authority to make such a move, but we also want to talk to the MACC to find out why out accounts were frozen,” he said.

Joe Jackson passed away on Wednesday at the age of 89.
DailyMail.com revealed last week that the King of Pop's father was on his deathbed and later hospitalized as he battled stage four pancreatic cancer.
A family source tells DailyMail.com that Jackson, who had his wife Katherine by his side when he passed away, faded into unconsciousness on Tuesday.
Katherine made the decision to move Jackson into hospice care over the weekend as his health began to rapidly decline.
The patriarch of the Jackson family had voiced his desire to hold on through Monday said the family source, which marked the ninth anniversary of his son's death.
Jackson and his wife had been living apart for the past few years following a tumultuous 69-year relationship during which Jackson fathered a love child, had multiple affairs and was accused of abusing the couple's children.

Jackson had been ailing for months, but took a turn for the worse in the past two weeks according to sources close to the family.
His famous family all clambered to be by the bedside of the sickly father-of-eleven, but Jackson's handlers allegedly barred senior family members from visiting him, including his wife Katherine and oldest child Rebbie.
For four days, his sons and daughters were locked in heated discussions, unsure what was going on and pleading to see their father.
DailyMail.com later learned that following an emergency Jackson family meeting and desperate pleas to Jackson's manager, Charles Coupet, family members were finally granted access to the octogenarian last Tuesday night.
It is understood that he suffered from a form of dementia and had suffered several strokes in recent years.
'I will always love you! You gave us strength, you made us one of the most famous families in the world,' wrote his daughter LaToya on Wednesday.
'I am extremely appreciative of that, I will never forget our moments together and how you told me how much you cared. #RIP Joe Jackson.
Katherine, daughters Rebbie and Joh'Vonnie and granddaughter Yashi Brown were among those who visited with Jackson in his final days.
At the same time, the Jackson family struggled to gain medical information about the dying man.
A source close to Joe's daughter Janet confirmed that she too had been denied access to see her father in recent days.
And Joe's other daughter Joh'Vonnie Jackson - the product of an extra-marital affair - had also been barred from seeing her dad despite being very close to him and living nearby in Vegas claimed the source.
Jackson's son Jermaine confirmed the odd situation when approached by DailyMail.com.
'No one knew what was going on - we shouldn't have to beg, plead, and argue to see our own father, especially at a time like this,' he said.
'We have been hurting. We were not being told where he was and couldn't get the full picture. Even from the doctor. My mother was worried sick.'
Jermaine, 63, added at the time: 'He's very very frail, he doesn't have long. The family needs to be by his bedside - that's our only intention in his final days.
'It's what any family would want, but some people around him think they know better...and they don't.'

Jackson guided his children to unprecedented success as The Jackson 5 after his own attempt at stardom did not pan out with his band The Falcons.
Prior to that, Jackson had attempted to forge a career as a professional boxer after his 1949 wedding to Katherine.
He was born Fountain Hill, Arkansas just one year before The Great Depression to Samuel Jackson, a university professor who was the son of a slave.
He was the oldest of five children, and at the age of 12 moved to California with his father when his parents split.
His mother and other four siblings all moved to Chicago, with Jackson later joining them at the age of 18 when his father remarried.
That is when he began to pursue boxing, having dropped out of high school, and was briefly married to another woman before divorcing her and then pursuing a relationship with Katherine Scruse.
The two married soon after and he got a job at Inland Steel as a crane operator.
One year later, the couple had their first of 10 children, daughter Rebbie.
In was in the early 1960s that he began to create what would become the Jackson 5, which initially consisted of his three eldest sons: Jackie, Tito and Jermaine.
The boys were known as The Jackson Brothers and forced to spend most of their free time practicing as Jackson demanded perfection.
The group then became the Jackson 5 when Marlon and Michael joined a backup singers.
All that practice did pay off however, and the group found success on the road before drawing the attention of Gordon Keith, who released the group's first single in 1968 with Michael as the lead singer.
That was the beginning of the group's ascent, which all culminated with the boys being signed to Motown Records and the release of their first album, Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5.
The support of that A-list singing star catapulted the group, whose hits included ABC, I'll Be There and I Want You Back.
By that time the family was living in California, and after six years with Motown the boys signed an even more lucrative deal with Epic while Jackson began to send his three daughters Rebbie, Janet and LaToya out on the road to perform.
Janet's ascent began in 1982, and for the next two decades she was a fixture on the pop charts alongside her brother Michael, who had gone solo by that point.
At the same time, Jackson's reputation began to tarnish as details of his abhorrent behavior towards his children and extramarital affairs began to emerge.
It was also revealed that Katherine had filed for divorce in 1973 because of her husband's infidelity but later withdrew those papers.
One year later he welcomed his eleventh child, Joh'Vonnie, with his mistress Cheryl Terrell.
Jackson and Terrell went on to have a relationship for 25 years, and in 1982 Katherine once again filed fir divorce before once again deciding to opt out of the proceedings at the last second.
In 1993, Jackson suffered perhaps the most devastating blow of his life and career when Michael appeared on Oprah Winfrey's eponymous talk show and went into great detail about the emotional and physical abuse he endured during his youth.
That sit-down remains the most watched interview in television history, with 90 million people tuning in to hear the King of Pop speak openly for the first time in 14 years.
It would also be one of his last interviews, as he retreated from the public eye soon after in the wake of allegations that he had sexually molested young boys.
Jackson, despite his son's comments to Winfrey, stood by Michael's side throughout the trials that followed, often accompanying Michael to court.
In 2002 he was also inducted into the Rock and Hall of Fame as the Best Entertainment Manager of All Time.
Janet also paid tribute to her father just a few days ago at the Radio Disney Awards, where she was honored.
'My father, my incredible father drove me to be the best I can,' said Janet, who recently welcomed her first child last year, son Eissa Al Mana.
