Former state Forestry director jailed for corruption over logging permits

KUALA TERENGGANU: A former director with the state Forestry Department was slapped with a RM30,000 fine and 12 months’ jail on Wednesday (June 20) after he was found guilty of three counts of corruption at the Sessions Court here.
Datuk Azmi Nordin, 59, had been charged with accepting bribes amounting to RM60,000 on three separate occasions between March and August 2013 from a timber company to get permits to log at the Hulu Terengganu Forest reserve.
In the first offence, Azmi was accused of receiving RM30,000 from the timber company in March that year.
He later received RM20,000 and RM10,000 in June and August, 2013.
He also ordered for the prison sentence to run concurrently but for the fine be paid in full.
However, Mohd Haldar granted a stay of execution on the prison sentence.
Azmi paid the fine and is preparing to appeal his case.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Farah Yasmin Salleh prosecuted while Azmi was represented by lawyer Mohd Hayyatuddin Muhammad.
