MAEPS PKRC 2.0 officially closes on Feb 8

MAEPS PKRC 2.0 officially closes on Feb 8
31/01/2022

SERDANG, Jan 31 -- After 14 months of operations the COVID-19 Integrated Quarantine and Treatment Centre (PKRC) at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (PKRC MAEPS 2.0) here will be officially closed on Feb 8.

It is understood that the last group of COVID-19 patients who received treatment at the PKRC was allowed to leave yesterday.

National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) director-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said the MAEPS PKRC 2.0 was closed after finding that it was no longer economical taking into account operating costs and the declining number of patients.

"We are only closing MAEPS 2.0 Integrated PKRC, not all PKRCs are closed. We are committed to ensuring that there is at least one PKRC operating in each state. We will support the Health Ministry as needed," he told Bernama today.

Nadma is the agency responsible for the management of PKRCs nationwide.

According to him, currently there are 51 PKRCs operating nationwide with a total capacity of 16,863 beds and 4,061 patients being treated.

Aminuddin said the proposal to close MAEPS PKRC 2.0 had been tabled and agreed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Special Duties) Datuk Dr Abdul Latiff Ahmad.

MAEPS was activated as a PKRC on April 16, 2020, with the intake of COVID-19 patients at the centre only involving non-citizen patients for category one (no symptoms) and category two (mild symptoms), and then closed on July 15 the same year.

On Dec 9, 2020, the government decided to reactivate the MAEPS PKRC following the increase in COVID-19 cases.

Initially, patient intake only involved non-citizen patients for category one (no symptoms) and category two (mild symptoms) but on Jan 24 2021, it was upgraded to the MAEPS Integrated PKRC 2.0 after starting to accept category three patients (pneumonia) and four (requiring respiratory assistance) with moderate symptoms.

During the 14-month period, approximately 166,072 COVID-19 patients were placed in MAEPS PKRC 2.0 comprising category one to four patients.

Aminuddin said following the decision to close the MAEPS 2.0 PKRC, the Selangor Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) and the Federal Territory JPBN had agreed to open a more cost-effective state PKRC as an alternative.

According to him, category three to five patients will be admitted to the National Leprosy Control Centre (PKKN), Sungai Buloh Hospital, Kuala Lumpur Hospital, Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital for geriatric cases and other hospitals around the Klang Valley.

Most patients in categories one and two will undergo self-quarantine at their respective homes, he said.

JAKARTA: Indonesia will gradually reopen Bali for international tourists starting February 4, a much needed move to revive the resort island from the COVID-19 pandemic that battered its economy.

The government has also shortened the mandatory quarantine to five days from seven days to fully vaccinated travellers, despite a steady rise in COVID-19 cases in January.

However, travellers who have only received one dose still need to undergo seven-day quarantine.
"It is necessary to change the strategy in line with the high number of cases due to local transmission," Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said in a briefing.

The government is emphasising on reallocating quarantine facilities to prioritise domestic COVID-19 patients over travellers.

The world's fourth most populous nation reported 10,185 new Covid-19 cases today.
In mid-January, Health Ministry extrapolated that the infections caused by the Omicron variant in the country will reach its peak at the end of February.

Both will take effect from Feb 5 until June 5, he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park, Southeast Asia's most anticipated theme park, will open its doors to the public on Feb 8, 2022.

As part of the theme park's soft opening, Genting SkyWorlds is offering a 20 per cent discount from its published rates for bookings from Feb 8 to March 31, 2022.

In a statement today, Genting Malaysia Bhd head of business operations and strategies Lee Thiam Kit said the theme park, built with an investment of over US$800 million (US$1=RM4.18), is a game-changing themed attraction park that will put Malaysia and Pahang on the world tourism map.

"This theme park will contribute to the tourism sector and the economy with the creation of over a thousand jobs," he said.

After purchasing tickets online, guests are encouraged to download the Genting SkyWorlds Theme Park mobile app, which is available for free on Google Play, Apple App Store and Huawei AppGallery.

Not only is the app a comprehensive guide to Genting SkyWorlds, with real-time information, it also enables guests to navigate and experience the park virtually prior to arrival, giving a head-start on what to do, where to go and how to get there.

Among other features, guests will be able to check wait times for rides, attractions and shows; receive promotional offers and discount vouchers; discover dining, shopping, games, and its advanced Photo+ service.

Meanwhile, Resorts World Genting vice president, head of theme park operations Greg Pearn said the app, a first for the Southeast Asian region, is also integrated with the park's Virtual Queue (VQ) technology, an intelligent feature which will reduce long waits in physical lines, giving guests more freedom to do what they want and at a time they choose.

The VQ also allows guests to create boarding groups for multiple ticket holders, view recommended itineraries based on personal preferences, and receive real-time alerts for attraction reservations, availability, and must-see entertainment

"Opening a theme park during the pandemic has been a challenge, and whilst every effort has been made to ensure our full offerings are available, a small selection of attractions require a little more time to be completed, something the team is working hard to achieve," he said.

The group said during its soft opening period, there will be complimentary VQ and Photo+ access available where their guests can download and share unlimited digital photo content with a discount rate via their website and mobile app.

PM's Political Secretary lodges police report against three portals

January 31, 2022

Mohammad Anuar (centre) was met by reporters after making a police report at the IPD Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

KUALA LUMPUR: A police report was lodged against three local portals following false and defamatory statements that could tarnish the good name of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri.

The report was made by the Prime Minister's Political Secretary, Datuk Mohammad Anuar Mohd Yunus at the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters on Monday.

Mohammad Anuar described the actions as unethical and disturbing to public order, saying that he detected three links to the news reports each related to 'Ismail Sabri is worried about being the shortest PM'. "These three portals willfully and unethically make false reports with malicious intent and defame the Prime Minister.

"Spreading the statement also caused annoyance among the people," he said when met by reporters after making a police report at the Dang Wangi FMI on Monday.

He said the statements were manipulated by the three portals from the Prime Minister's actual statement to reporters at a ceremony in Bera, Pahang on Saturday.

He said even the press conference at that time was not attended from the three portals.

"This police report was made so that the authorities investigate and take action on the portal which distorts and spreads the word to the detriment of the Prime Minister's credibility," he said.

Greenwood was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of rape and assault following reports of violence against a young woman, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has said. - AP

LONDON: Manchester United suspended footballer Mason Greenwood on Sunday, a move that followed accusations online that the 20-year-old player had assaulted a woman.

In an initial statement on Sunday, the club said it was "aware of images and allegations circulating on social media," saying it would not comment further until the facts had been established, and adding
"Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind."

In a later statement, United said, "Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice."

Reuters was not immediately able to contact Greenwood or a representative for him. The BBC reported that Greenwood had not responded to the social media allegations.

The allegations against Greenwood, including video, photographs and a voice note, were posted on Instagram on Sunday morning and later deleted.

Greater Manchester Police said a man was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault and was being held in custody for questioning after social media images and videos were posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.

In keeping with police practice they did not name the suspect.

"An investigation was launched and following enquiries we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault," the police said in a statement.

Greenwood has six goals and two assists in 24 matches in all competitions for United this season. He began his career at United's academy and has played once for the England national team.

MELBOURNE: Rafa Nadal edged Daniil Medvedev in a classic Australian Open final on Sunday, roaring back from two sets down to claim a record 21st Grand Slam title only months after fearing his glorious career might be over due to injury.

With Novak Djokovic forced out by deportation and Roger Federer recovering from knee surgery, the Spanish great is now one major title clear of his ‘Big Three’ rivals after surviving the 2-6 6-7(5) 6-4 6-4 7-5 thriller at Rod Laver Arena.

Riding a wave of raucous support from the crowd, a vintage Nadal pulled off one of his finest performances to deny Medvedev again, less than three years after leaving the Russian heartbroken in five sets at the 2019 U.S. Open final.

In a match steeped in drama, Nadal was two points from the title but was broken as he served for the match at 5-4.

He held firm to break Medvedev again and served out the match to love, rushing in to deliver a backhand volley as a stunning coup de grace.

Dropping his racket, Nadal shook his head and grinned, then kicked a tennis ball away and pumped his fists in delight.

It was a triumph that defied time and logic, the 35-year-old completing his first five-set win from a two-set deficit in 15 years -- since overhauling Mikhail Youzhny in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2007.

Having suffered four final defeats in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2019, Nadal can now savour a second Melbourne Park crown, 13 years after beating Federer in the 2009 decider.

The long hair and pirate shorts of that decade have fallen by the way-side, but the class and fighting spirit endure in the face of Nadal's titanic battles to recover from injuries.

Having missed Wimbledon due to fatigue and the U.S. Open because of a chronic condition in his left foot, Nadal was on the brink of quitting in late-2021 and felt blessed just to turn up at Melbourne Park this year.

His ability to play seven matches felt miraculous for the Spaniard, who joins Djokovic, Rod Laver and Roy Emerson as the only men to win each Grand Slam title twice.

Now more than ever, world number one Djokovic may rue his failed bid to defend his title in Melbourne without COVID-19 vaccination.

His deportation threw the tournament wide open, leaving a vacuum for Nadal to fill and strike a potentially decisive blow in the Grand Slam race.

IPOH: Hundreds of homes were damaged during a tornado-like freak storm in Kampung Tawas and Taman Tasek Damai here this evening.

This has left most of the Chinese residents in Kampung Tawas in despair as they are due to celebrate the Chinese New Year in just two days' time.

Teoh Boh Chee, who is in her 60s, said she was shocked when she suddenly heard the sound of strong winds blowing at about 6 pm.

"I was cooking at that time and saw with my own eyes the roof of my house being torn off and blown away by the wind.

"I really don't know what to do because Chinese New Year is only two days away... how are we going to celebrate it now?," she said when met by reporters.

Meanwhile, a trader Yong Chee Fong, 35, said he was thankful that 10 customers and several workers who were in his eatery managed to escape when the roof collapsed during the storm.

"I have been selling food here for the past 10 years but this is the first time such a very bad storm has occurred, damaging all the equipment in my shop," he said.

Mita Devi, 36, said she personally saw the 'tornado', which occurred for about 20 minutes, and witnessed roofs being blown away.

"I could only pray asking that our family be spared and I am thankful that our house is not too badly damaged," she said.

Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran, who visited the site, urged all the victims involved to lodge a police report to facilitate his office and the state government to provide financial aid.

A Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) spokesman said they received a report of the incident at 6.40pm and quickly mobilised officers and firemen from the Ipoh JBPM station to the affected locations.

He said that while several trees were uprooted and houses damaged, no injury or deaths were reported so far.

Doctor pleads guilty to having unregistered Ivermectin products
NST - January 28, 2022

Nicholas James (clad in white) was charged at the Sessions Court here for having unregistered Ivermectin products which is an offence under Regulation 7(1) (a) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetic Regulations 1984. - NSTP/ERSIE ANJUMIN

KOTA KINABALU: A medical practitioner who bought Ivermectin tablets to protect his family members from Covid-19 was charged at the Sessions Court here with having unregistered products.

Nicholas James, 46, pleaded guilty before Judge Elsie Primus today.

He admitted to having 100 strips of Biomec 12 Ivermectin BP 12mg on Aug 23 last year at 12.35noon at a clinic in Api-Api Centre here.

The offence under Regulation 30(1) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetic Regulations 1984, which is punishable under Section 12(1) of the Sale of Drugs Act 1952, carries a maximum fine of RM25,000 or imprisonment of up to three years or both, upon conviction.

However, due to some development in the facts of the case, the prosecution asked for another mention date. The court then fixed Feb 23 for re-mention.

Earlier, Nicholas claimed that it was a desperate move as he feared that his family members and relatives may contract Covid-19.

"Unfortunately, they (the Ivermectin products) are not registered," he said, adding that the product was meant to be used to protect and treat his family.

He also informed the court that his parents, brother and sister-in-law as well as their family members tested positive one month after the Ivermectin products that he bought had been confiscated.

"My father barely survived, and so did my brother. My mom died.

"I don't blame the pharmacies for doing their work. I blame myself because I was trusted to look after the family but I failed. I'm very sorry," he said, his voice cracked and he paused to take a deep breath.

"I don't think this offence will be repeated because this is unprecedented.

"That is why I asked for leniency from the court. It was never my intention to bring the unregistered products into circulation. It was never meant for the public. It was purely for personal use and my family," he said, adding that he doesn't want to prolong the issue.

In reply, prosecuting officer Ahmad Najib submitted that the product was not approved to be used by the Health Ministry.

"The fact that the exhibit (the Ivermectin product) is not registered with the relevant authority signifies that it was never tested for its ingredients and might contain contamination that is harmful if ingested," he said.

During the proceedings, the judge raised some questions, among others, on whether it is an offence to have the said unregistered product if it is only for personal use.

The judge also advised the unrepresented accused to engage a lawyer if he thinks it would be necessary for him.

It was also revealed in court that the parcel which contained the unregistered product was addressed to Nicholas.

Until now, no Ivermectin product has been approved for registration for human use or for the treatment and prevention of Covid-19 in the country.

PAS President Not right to claim Johor polls due to court cluster - Annuar Musa

Not right to claim Johor polls due to court cluster - Annuar

Januari 29, 2022

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang was not right in alleging that the upcoming Johor state election was engineered by the "court cluster" and those who lost in GE14, said Tan Sri Annuar Musa. - BERNAMA

JOHOR BAHRU: PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang was not right in alleging that the upcoming Johor state election was engineered by the "court cluster" and those who lost in the 14th general election (GE14), said Ketereh UMNO division chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa.

He said the holding of the election was in the interests of the people and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad decided to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly after consulting various parties and obtaining the consent of the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.

"To me, it's just an (Abdul Hadi's) opinion, not fact. Maybe the opinion was based on information sources that are not authentic.

"The election is not due to the court cluster. It was called because the Menteri Besar felt that Johor should not be in a situation which can stifle its development and government duties because the state has high potential," he told reporters after being interviewed by Johor FM at RTM Johor here today.

The phrase court cluster refers to high-profile leaders who are facing court cases.

Annuar, who is Communications and Multimedia Minister, said Johor was in an unusual situation where the state government enjoyed just a slim majority in the state assembly.

Also present were Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datuk Mokhtar Hussain and Broadcasting director-general Datuk Che Roslan Che Daud.

Annuar, who is also Ketereh MP, said this when asked to comment on Abdul Hadi's remark on the Johor polls.

He urged all political leaders to avoid making statements which could hurt the feelings of others and to respect Johor's decision to hold the election.

He said that in principle all quarters should continue cooperating for the sake of the people, just like the government of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob needs the continued support of PAS, Bersatu and opposition parties.

"Because at the national level we have a heavy responsibility to fulfil. That is a suitable formula which we will continue to support in the federal government; in the states it's a different matter.

"So, let Johor make its call based on the people's interests; we at the federal level will continue to help," he added.

Yesterday, Abdul Hadi, who is also Marang MP, was reported as saying that it was not a good idea to hold the Johor election at this time and that it was a strategy inspired by the court cluster and those who lost in GE14 and are without posts.

Booster dose given according to current developments on COVID-19 - MOH

The administration of the COVID-19 booster vaccine is based on current developments in relation to the effectiveness of vaccines and challenges arising from the emergence of new variants of the virus, the Health Ministry (MOH) said today. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR: The administration of the COVID-19 booster vaccine is based on current developments in relation to the effectiveness of vaccines and challenges arising from the emergence of new variants of the virus, the Health Ministry (MOH) said today.
It said the National COVID-19 Immunisation Programme for the first and second doses was still actively implemented on Sept 20, 2021, with the rate of fully vaccinated adults then being at 79.6 per cent and still short of the 90 per cent target.

According to MOH, interstate travel was still not allowed and travel into and out of the country was tightly controlled then, apart from the fact that the comprehensive administering of the booster dose had yet to begin in September 2021.

"The administration (of booster dose) was implemented in stages, with priority then given to vulnerable groups comprising senior citizens, people with comorbidities and those exposed to risk of infection.

"Only after the majority of these groups had received the booster (dose) was the booster vaccination opened to the eligible general population," MOH said in a statement on its Facebook page tonight.

It was clarifying a viral video on Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin talking about the third dose at a press conference after inspecting the COVID-19 screening services at KLIA on Sept 20, 2021.

Khairy had said the booster dose at that time needed to be given to those aged 60 and above, and people with comorbidities or immunocompromised, while healthy individuals were not encouraged to take the jab.

MOH said countries like the United Kingdom, the United States, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore also offered the booster dose to their adult populations.

Rakyat mahu perubahan, a new norm.

KUANTAN: The excitement of attending a wedding reception ended in tragedy for a family of five, as four of them were killed when the Toyota Vellfire they were in was hit by a four-wheel-drive that is believed to have run a red light at KM2 of Jalan Lebu-Mempaga, Bentong today.

Pahang Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief Supt Kamarulzaman Jusoh said the incident that occurred at 3.10 pm claimed the lives of housewife Raihan Mohamad, 43, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, and her three children Ahda Dalili Mohd Nazri, 14, Ahmad Muaz, seven, and Ahda Imtinan, four.

Meanwhile, Raihan's husband, Mohd Nazri Hamid, 43, who is a teacher, injured his left hand.
"The family was believed to be on its way from their house in Felda Aring 1 Teacher's Quarters in Gua Musang, Kelantan, to Kuala Lumpur, and when they arrived at the scene, the victim's vehicle was believed to have turned right at the junction after the traffic light turned green.

"However, a Nissan Navara four-wheel-drive vehicle which is believed to have run the red light suddenly came and crashed head-on into the Toyota Vellfire, which caused it to spin around and hit the road divider," he said in a statement here today.

Kamarulzaman said the impact of the accident caused the victims' vehicle to be badly crushed in the front and left side, while the four-wheel-drive was damaged in the front.

The 43-year-old Nissan Navara driver from Karak, Bentong, suffered injuries to his head and was sent to the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Hospital in Temerloh for treatment.

An initial urine screening at the Bentong Hospital found that he was positive for drugs.

The bodies of all the victims were taken to Bentong Hospital for autopsy, and further investigation is being conducted in accordance with Section 44 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
