KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians can now enjoy RM5 meals for lunch or dinner at nearly 15,000 food premises nationwide from today through the Menu Rahmah initiative.

The menu comprises a balanced meal that includes rice, a choice of protein either chicken or fish and vegetables which is being offered to those affected by the current increase in the cost of living.

However, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub said he observed that some traders were also offering different food items such as fried noodles, rojak, roti John and kebab wrap or shawarma.

"To facilitate the people, we (KPDN) will put a Menu Rahmah sticker or sign at the premises involved so that the people will know which outlets are participating in the programme.

"We will also publicise this programme and I urge social media influencers to help the government spread the word around so that the people are aware of this benefit," he said after launching the programme at Mydin Subang Jaya Hypermarket, near here today.

He said so far, seven restaurant owner associations including the Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (PRESMA), the Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association (PRIMAS) and the Malaysian Tomyam Restaurant Owners Association are involved.

Also participating in the programme are members of the Malaysia Singapore Coffee Shop Proprietors General Association (MCSPGA), Bumiputra Retailers Organisation (BRO), Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) and Malaysia Retailers Association (MRA).

Salahuddin said the programme would continue as long as the food outlets are willing to cooperate in providing the services.

"Should they (premises operators) find it hard to cope with the price, they can tell us (KPDN) so that we can discuss over this from time to time, but so far, they have no problem with the RM5 menu.

"Besides, I don't think others who are not from the hardcore or poor households will take advantage of the Rahmah Menu served," he said adding that they were free to do so if by the middle of the month their money runs low.

Meanwhile Salahuddin said all other 'Rahmah' initiatives would be implemented by the end of March.

The Bakul Rahmah aid will be given to the hardcore poor every month while under the Rahmah Package Price, 12 basic necessities can be purchased at a fixed price.

"The Kafe Rahmah initiative will be implemented at local universities starting in Kuala Lumpur, to cover free breakfast and lunch while evening meals will be offered at 50 per cent discount.

"These are among the small steps taken by KPDN to help the hardcore poor, low-income households and students from underprivileged families," he said.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today shared his experience that he had gained from Manchester United's lagendary manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, saying sports bodies, associations and individuals can replicate such words of wisdom for the development of sports in the country.

Speaking at the 2021 National Sports Awards ceremony here today, Anwar who related his discussion with Alex Ferguson during a meeting that was made possible by former United States vice president Al Gore in New York some time ago said what remained etched in his mind was the love and respect that the manager had instilled among the players to build a strong successful team.

"Not easy to unite, blend and mould players from many countries with different back grounds, culture, religion and lifestyle before arriving at Manchester United.

"Alex Ferguson said as a leader, we must express our love and respect to those who are in the team and from there, we can mould a team that will be tightly knitted and bonded although they come from different back grounds and places," he said.

The awards ceremony was also attended by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, her deputy Adam Adli Abd Halim, Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria and officials from sports bodies and associations.

The Prime Minister added that the concern of Alex Ferguson in safeguarding the values and welfare of the players should be examplary and should be replicated by managers and administrators of sports in Malaysia so as to build strong values among athletes.

"Once you win their heart you eventually win the game," he said when drawing a phrase from Alex Ferguson and added that it would be suitable for those involved in the development of athletes and sports in the country.

The Prime Minister also stressed that the welfare of athletes must be given utmost priority and importance by all sports associations or sports bodies.

Anwar said success in sports cannot be achieved if the welfare of athletes is ignored.

"That is why I agree with the Sports Minister's stern reminder to all those involved in sports to not misuse the trust vested on them to safeguard sports associations, especially when it involves the welfare of children who are involved in sports," he said.

ISLAMABAD: The death toll from Monday's suicide bombing at a mosque inside a police headquarters in Pakistan's northern city of Peshawar has risen to 83, with 21 more bodies retrieved from the rubble.

"The death toll has now risen to 83, with 57 injured still in hospital," Muhammad Asim, a spokesman for Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar, told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

Three injured are in serious condition, while nearly 100 have been discharged from the hospital, he added.

On Monday, a suspected suicide bomber blew himself up during midday prayers at the mosque within the Police Headquarters in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial capital of Peshawar.

According to city police chief Muhammad Ijaz Khan, the attack was a suicide bombing as police recovered the head of the bomber from the spot.

Several people were buried under the debris after most parts of the mosque building collapsed, so the rescue operation continued through the night.

The deceased included several senior police officers and the prayer leader.

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told the local Geo TV channel that the suspected bomber was standing in the front row of the mosque and blew himself up as soon as the prayers began.

"As soon as the imam (prayer leader) began praying, there was a deafening explosion, which tossed me into the air and threw me away," Mohammad Mushtaq, a police officer who got injured in the blast, told reporters at the hospital.

In neighbouring Afghanistan, the Taliban administration condemned the bombing, calling it "against the teachings of Islam."

Anadolu Agency reported that the Afghan Taliban Foreign Ministry in a statement also expressed sympathy to the families of the deceased and injured.

Meanwhile, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is observing a day of mourning across the province on Tuesday.

"In view of the two most unfortunate incidents of capsizing of a boat full of children at Tanda Dam, Kohat on 29-01-2023 and the terrorist attack at Police Lines, Peshawar on 30-01-2023, causing irreparable loss of human lives, the Provincial Government with a deep sense of grief and sorrow announces Tuesday as a day of mourning throughout the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," said a notification.

"The National Flag of Pakistan shall fly at half-mast throughout the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa," it added.

Four militants were killed in a joint intelligence-based operation by security forces and police against terrorists in the districts of Swabi and Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

According to police, the joint operation was carried out after the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), police, and intelligence agencies received information about the presence of militants in Hind village in Swabi on Monday.

The militants opened fire on security forces and police, but two of them blew themselves up and the third surrendered, they said, adding that two police officers were also injured during the operation.

Separately, two militants were killed in the Dera Ismail Khan district during an encounter with security forces in the Loni area on Monday, according to the report.

A search operation was conducted in the area based on a tip-off about the presence of terrorists, the local Dawn newspaper reported citing unnamed sources, who also said a huge amount of weapons were also recovered from the possession of the slain terrorists.

Sulu sultanate heirs' claim: Luxembourg court issues decision to lift attachment

A court in Luxembourg has issued a decision to lift the attachment requested by individuals who claimed to be 'heirs' of the Sulu group, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman.

PUTRAJAYA: A court in Luxembourg has issued a decision to lift the attachment (saisie arret) requested by individuals who claimed to be 'heirs' of the Sulu group, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

In a statement today, Azalina said the District Court of Luxembourg issued the decision on Jan 24 to lift the attachment requested by the group on July 11, last year (2022).

The attachment was based on the purported Final Award and the purported Preliminary Award issued by the purported arbitrator Dr Stampa, on Feb 28 and May 25 last year as well as on the ex parte Exequatur Order of May 18, 2022 recognising these purported awards in Luxembourg, she said.

"Malaysia is currently challenging the ex parte Exequatur Order before the Luxembourg Court of Appeal," she said.

Malaysia immediately applied to the District Court of Luxembourg to obtain interim relief to release the attachment and the hearing took place on Dec 5 last year before the District Court, she said.

Azalina said the District Court of Luxembourg had accepted Malaysia's challenge based on the fact that the claimants had, according to the court, voluntarily omitted to reveal their real addresses.

"The court considered this omission significant and found that the claimants' conduct impeded the service of documents and the enforcement of the potential judgment to be rendered against them," she said.

Azalina said according to the court, the claimants' conduct constituted a "manifestly illicit hardship" that is detrimental to Malaysia.

She said the conduct is typical of the deceitful and fraudulent manner in which the claimants have consistently conducted themselves in their claim against Malaysia.

"It comes as no surprise that the claimants' case failed at the first instance," she said.

Azalina stressed that the Malaysian government is relentless in its effort to protect and preserve Malaysia's interests, sovereign immunity and sovereignty at all times, and will continue to vigorously take all the necessary actions to put an end to the claimants' fictitious claim.

KUALA LUMPUR: The procurement of the first batch of the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) has been reduced from six to five vessels after the application to continue the project was discussed again by the government, Navy chief Admiral Datuk Abdul Rahman Ayob said.

"Originally, it was six units of LCS, but when we re-applied and discussed the matter again, we agreed for the vessels to be reduced to five.

"The first batch has been set at five (units). This decision was made sometime ago when the government decided to continue the LCS project (last year)."

He told reporters this after delivering his maiden speech after being appointed as the 18th Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief at Wisma Pertahanan here today.

Also present were Deputy Chief of Navy Vice-Admiral Datuk Sabri Zali, Western Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Datuk Abu Bakar Md Ajis, Eastern Fleet Commander Vice-Admiral Datuk Muhammad Ruzelme Ahmad Fahimy and president of National Centre for Defence Studies Vice-Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain.

Abdul Rahman said the sixth supplementary agreement on the LCS project would be signed soon to enable the following process to take place and the construction to be carried out as planned.

"It is okay now. There is nothing surprising, and we hope we can get these vessels according to schedule (because) we lack high-capacity assets like the LCS.

"With the presence of LCS, it can help us to strengthen (our capability) and carry out our tasks with excellence," he said.

In the meantime, Abdul Rahman said the procurement of the second batch of Littoral Mission Ship (LMS) would be realised in safeguarding the security and sovereignty of the country's waters.

"We hope the application can be approved this year to enable us to carry out the procurement process, with every vessel to take at least three years to complete.

"This time, we need LMS with combat capability. That's a significant difference from the four LMS we've acquired from China. For starters, we requested three units (for the second batch)," he said.

SEMPORNA: It was a highly traumatic Monday morning for school children and teachers when the pier of the Pulau Pababag jetty collapsed here this morning, sending some 25 pupils into the sea and teachers heroically jumping in to save them but fortunately it was during low tide as seen from a viral video.

There were no casualties according to the deputy director of Sabah State Education Department (school management), Abidin Marjan who said the 6.45 am incident occurred when school children were alighting from boats to walk across the pier.

Two students suffered minor injuries to their lips and hands, after knocking into the wood and concrete segments of the pier.

"During the incident, two teachers jumped in to rescue the pupils. The teachers and students involved were allowed to go home and there were no serious injuries," Abidin Marjan said here later today.

He said the village jetty was part of the pier leading to the Pulau Pababag primary school.

Today, a one-minute 30-second video had gone viral showing pupils being rescued after the pier in Kampung Pababag collapsed.

In KOTA KINABALU, Sulabayan community development leader Abdul Manan Indanan hoped for immediate allocation from the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) to rebuild the collapsed pier on Pababag Island.

"I happened to be meeting the minister (Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) today and showed him a video of the pier collapsing and the students involved. We hope construction can be carried out soon, we will also meet the village head and the school for further action," he said here today.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (MOE) in a statement today said it has taken steps through the Semporna District Education Office to investigate the incident and provide immediate assistance to all concerned.

"The MOE views the incident seriously and will ensure that safety aspects are improved by mandating the use of life jackets and also checks on the pier structure.

"KPM (MOE) will also hold an engagement session with stakeholders and local authorities in the near future to discuss proposed infrastructure improvements at the jetty to ensure there is no recurrence," he said.

According to the statement, psychosocial support will be provided to the teachers and students involved, besides requesting the local government to provide a safer alternative route for students, parents and teachers going to the school.

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has issued a Stop Work Order for a construction site in Jalan Raja Laut here with immediate effect following service disruption on the Ampang Light Rail Transit (LRT) line on Jan 27.

Mayor Datuk Seri Mahadi Che Ngah said the stop work order was issued to 'Tetuan Persekutuan Seruan Islam (Jam'iyah) Selangor dan Wilayah Persekutuan', the owners of the proposed project which involves the construction of the 44-storey Menara SOHO building comprising 326 units with a basement on Lot PT 163.

He said the decision was made from the outcome of a meeting held with representatives of the Land Transport Agency (APAD), Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) and several DBKL departments last Saturday (Jan 28).

"This directive is a safety measure to ensure that APAD and its related agencies can investigate, scrutinise, and then determine the cause of the LRT service disruption," he said in a statement today.

He said the project is currently only at the preliminary stage, involving earthworks outside of zone 1 and zone 2 (protection zone).

"DBKL through its One Stop Committee (OSC) will also seek the involvement of APAD and Prasarana to obtain their views especially when there is a development application in or near the Railway Protection Zone," he added.

On Jan 27, the LRT service for the Ampang Line experienced delays due to a kinked track alignment near the Bandaraya LRT station.

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd in a statement stated that preliminary checks found that the LRT service delay was caused by damage to the flyover structure carrying the rail tracks due to construction work adjacent to the area.

PUTRAJAYA: The prosecution today withdrew its appeals to forfeit monies totalling RM21.7 million belonging to 11 entities and individuals, including Pekan UMNO and the Johor UMNO Liaison Committee, allegedly linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (IMDB) funds.

The others are from Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd, Jakel Trading, Barisan Nasional Johor Bahru division, Mediaedge CIA Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Sarawak United People's Party, director for Strategic Engagement Media Sdn Bhd (CENSE Media) Sim Sai Hoon, AGA Touch Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Yayasan Persatuan Bekas Anggota Kemas Malaysia (Yayasan PBAKM) and former land and cooperative development minister Tan Sri Kasitah Gaddam.

Deputy public prosecutor Kamal Bahrin Omar notified the Court of Appeal three-member Bench today that the prosecution has withdrawn its appeals against the eleven respondents.

The notice of discontinuance of the appeals was filed on Friday (Jan 27).

Kamal Bahrin also told the court that monies that were seized would be returned to the respondents.

Justice Datuk Seri Kamaludin Md Said, who presided with Justices Datuk Abu Bakar Jais and Datuk Supang Lian, then struck out the appeals.

The prosecution were unsuccessful in the High Court to forfeit RM700,000 from Pekan UMNO, RM100,000 from Yayasan PBAKM,

RM628,314 from Jakel Trading, RM10,747,042.77 from Jakel Trading Sdn Bhd, RM677,872.55, from the Johor Umno Liaison Committee, RM957,395.65 from Johor Bahru Barisan Nasional

A separate High Court had also dismissed the prosecution's appeal to forfeit RM100,000 from Kasitah, RM3 million belonging to AGA Touch (M) Sdn Bhd, an IT firm, RM41,261.64 from Sim Sai Hoon, the director of the research firm Centre for Strategic Engagement Sdn Bhd, RM188,138.26 from Sarawak United People's Party and RM4,631,602 from Mediaedge CIA.

Meanwhile, the court fixed March 28 for hearing of the appeals brought by Pahang MCA Liaison Committee, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and the family of the late former Paya Besar Member of Parliament and Umno division head Datuk Seri Abdul Manan Ismail.

This is to enable them to file their respective representations to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) following the prosecution's stand to withdraw its appeals for the eleven cases.

Justice Kamaludin, chairing the Bench, said there must be consistency since the prosecution has withdrawn its appeal for the eleven cases.

He then suggested that counsels for the three cases submit their representations to the AGC.

The Court of Appeal judge (Justice Kamaludin) then ordered the three parties to go for case management.

A case management was subsequently conducted before Court of Appeal deputy registrar Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli who then set March 28 for hearing for the three appeals. He also gave the parties until Feb 10 to submit their representations to the AGC.

Three separate High Courts had allowed the prosecution's application to forfeit monies totalling RM2.1 million from Pahang MCA Liaison Committee, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and Abdul Manan's family.

The 14 cases today are among 41 entities from which the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission (MACC) sought to recover assets said to have been paid for using funds from 1MDB.

FIH need to relook at World Cup format - MHC

FIH need to relook at World Cup format - MHC

Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal

29/01/2023

06:02 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) has called on the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to relook at the current WorldCup format in Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, India.

Based on the current format, MHC President Datuk Seri Subahan Kamal said it was unfair for a team like Malaysia that posted more wins in the tournament, to finishthe tournament lower than the team that registered a single win in India.

As Speedy Tigers lost to Spain 3-4 in the sudden death penalty shootout in the crossover match, Subahan strongly believed that the national team should be fightingfor a 9-12 spot and not against South Africa for 9-16 classification match.

“South Africa lost every game in the Group A and ended up they finished higher than us. We can’t do much because that is the rule set by FIH but I seriously call upon

FIH to relook at this because it was unfair.

“I don’t believe we finished 13, we should be up there in 9-12 place because the numbers speak for itself,” he told a press conference during the MHC board executivemeeting here, today.

Malaysia, who were the Group C runner up, went down 3-6 to South Africa, who finished bottom of Group A, in the 9-16 classification match, last Thursday.

The result meant the national squad had to play Japan for 13-16 spot. Malaysia sealed the 13th spot after edging Japan, 3-2, yesterday.

The win ensured the Speedy Tigers ended their World Cup campaign this time two spots better than the 15th placing they earned in the 2018 edition, also in India.

South Africa, on the other hand, were ranked 11th following a 2-5 loss to the host, India, in the 9-12 qualification match.

Subahan opined that it would be better for FIH to use the previous edition format whereby those who finished bottom of the group were eliminated straight from thecompetition and their position would be counted on their performance in group ties.

Despite finishing 13th in India, he was still proud by the performance from A. Arul Selvaraj’s side as they had proved that they still can give top teams a run for theirmoney after they managed to draw level 2-2 with Spain in normal time in the crossover match and even stunned New Zealand 3-2 in the group tie.

He also hoped that all players will regroup after they return home on Jan 31 and be focused to win the Asian Games gold in Hangzhou, China, scheduled from Sept23-Oct 8, in a bid to earn an automatic slot to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
