SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will investigate any form of corruption based on the provisions of the law, rather than subject to personal understanding.

Quoting The Star report , its Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said, corruption is corruption, no matter how one chooses to describe it because the law clearly defines what is meant by vote buying.

"Section 10(a) of the Electoral Offenses Act 1954 is very clear and whatever public term is used to defend the argument is purely personal interpretation.

"Whether it is 'charity' or 'contribution', the law considers it a bribe paid to voters, regardless of whether the voters ask for it or not," he said.

Azam asserted that Section 10 (a) defines in detail the act of corruption before, during and after the election which is done directly or indirectly by the candidate himself or by a representative on his behalf.

He said this when commenting on PAS President Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang's statement regarding the petition filed by Terengganu UMNO to cancel the GE15 results in three parliamentary constituencies in the East Coast state.

Hadi said that those recorded in the video handing over cash to voters were only doing charity work.

The Marang Member of Parliament, said the election law stipulates that only candidates and their agents are prohibited from giving cash.
