FINAS advises film industry to penetrate Asian market before eyeing Oscars

KUALA LUMPUR: The local film industry is advised to focus on the Asian market first before targeting the international stage such as winning the Oscars.

Chairman of the National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia (FINAS), Datuk Hans Isaac, said that although the dream of winning an award at the Academy Awards was a noble goal, a phased approach needed to be taken by taking advantage of the regional market first.

"We always talk about the Oscars, aiming for the Oscars... but (in) my opinion, try to penetrate the Asian market first. We try to win (awards) at the Asian level, (penetrate) the Asian market, then only look at the Oscars," he said when met at Wisma Bernama, here today.

Hans said it was more practical to strengthen its position among audiences in Southeast Asia and Asia in general before moving further onto the global stage.

"We want to go straight to the Oscars... I think this is a bit difficult right now. There needs to be a process," he said.

Meanwhile, regarding his appointment as Chairman of FINAS, Hans expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and promised to give his best for the benefit of the country's arts industry.

"I hope that at least five or six major issues in the creative industry can be resolved within two to three years," he said.
