PUTRAJAYA, May 31 — Education Minister Maszlee Malik today announced that his ministry is working to lift the travel ban on an estimated one million National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) defaulters next month.

He indicated that the ban may be lifted by June 15.

“The process to remove defaulters from the blacklist will be executed in phases between May 24 and June 15.

“Should any of you face trouble at the airport, please contact our officers there,” he told a news conference here.

PTPTN chief executive Wan Ahmad Wan Yusoff, who was also present at the news conference, said the travel blacklist dated back to 2000.

“Some of them paid but stopped after a while, and some never did start paying,” he said.

To date, he said PTPTN has collected about RM1 billion from debtors.

Maszlee also said fresh graduates who owed PTPTN but currently earn RM4,000 or below need not remit payment until a proper mechanism was in place.

“We are studying this at the moment and we will take this into consideration as we are currently struggling to clean the dirt caused by the previous administration,” Maszlee said when asked if this could result in accumulated interests.

Maszlee added that his ministry will deliver all promises made in the Pakatan Harapan election manifesto based on priorities, without elaborating on how it planned to do so and the timeframe

Mass rapid transit line 3 (MRT 3 or Circle Line) project, costing between RM40bil and RM45bil, will not proceed

Govt scraps MRT 3 project

Thursday, 31 May 2018

PUTRAJAYA: The Klang Valley mass rapid transit line 3 (MRT 3 or Circle Line) project, reported to cost between RM40bil and RM45bil, will not proceed, says Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The MRT3 or MRT Circle Line was planned as the third MRT line for the Greater Klang Valley area.

While the MRT1 connects Sungai Buloh and Kajang, the MRT2, which is now under construction, will run from Sungai Buloh to Serdang and Putrajaya.

MRT3 was planned as a loop line to integrate the lines, with most of its stations underground.

He said Malaysia was open to re-considering its decision on the HSR if Singapore could convince Malaysia to proceed with it.

He said the Cabinet had agreed for the rail project to be scrapped, but it would also depend on discussions with Singapore.

“We want to do this as it has high financial implications. But we will listen to them (if Singapore wants to proceed). They are our good partners,” he told the media after chairing the Cabinet meeting yesterday.

He explained that Malaysia needed to reduce its borrowings, hence the decision to scrap HSR and review other mega projects that cost billions of ringgit.

“We have borrowed too much money. If this country is to avoid bankruptcy, we must learn how to manage our big debts by doing away with projects that are not beneficial to the country,” he added.

Later, at a buka puasa event at Putrajaya International Convention Centre, he said the money spent on the HSR project did not justify the number of jobs it could generate.

“If you are going to spend RM60bil to RM100bil so that thousands of people can work, that’s not very efficient,” he said in response to a Facebook post by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, who defended the HSR.

Najib, who asked the Government not to make “an emotional decision” to scrap the project, said the HSR was projected to create RM650bil in gross national income and 110,000 job opportunities, which could expand to 442,000 jobs by 2069.

On the fate of the ECRL, Dr Mahathir said the project has not been called off and a detailed review was being conducted.

“We haven’t cancelled ECRL. We have spent a lot of money on it and need to look at ways to handle this matter,” he said.

According to recent reports, the actual cost of the ECRL could be more than RM55bil.

Dr Mahathir also said the 11th Malaysia Plan mid-term review would be tabled in Parliament in November along with Budget 2019.

“The review will take into consideration the progress of projects carried out from 2016 to 2018, and the Government’s way forward for the remaining period of between this year and 2020,” he added.

Parliament is expected to start its meeting next month, but Dr Mahathir said the dates had yet to be fixed since the appointment of ministers had not been completed.

On whether the Cabinet had decided on the fate of the National Civics Bureau (BTN), he said the matter was still being studied.

The Prime Minister also said no decision had been made on whether the Department of Islamic Development (Jakim) would be closed.

Photos, video of man resembling Musa in London go viral

KOTA KINABALU: Pictures and a video of a man resembling Sabah Barisan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Musa Aman at the St Pancras International railway station in London have gone viral.

The photos and a brief video were posted by Facebook user Az Eem who also tagged Rafizi Ramli who heads Invoke Malaysia.

The post published a few hours ago on Thursday (May 31) was captioned: Ex CM (Chief Minister) Sabah spotted at St Pancras, London.

However, it could not be ascertained if the person seen in the video dressed in a red jacket and a cap, standing with a loaded luggage trolley and a young child, was indeed Musa.

Musa is widely believed to have fled to London without using proper legal channels.

He has remained out of public view though he has made statements via his lawyers on several occasions.

His last statement was made on May 26 to convey the message that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was free to search his house.

Musa is being sought by the MACC for a graft probe and also by the police to record his statement over an alleged criminal intimidation report lodged against him by Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

MACC sources have indicated that Musa had left the country before it could apply for him to be blacklisted from travelling.

Sabah police want to record a statement from Musa but said they do not have an arrest warrant for the former chief minister, whom they confirmed is not in Kota Kinabalu.

Immigration Department did not have a record of Musa leaving the country.

The police report by Juhar surfaced after two political leaders were sworn in at Istana Negeri as the chief minister within 48 hours.

The police investigation is likely to give a clearer picture on what happened at Istana Negeri on the night of May 10 amid the political horse-trading.

Musa was sworn in before the Governor during an apparently delayed ceremony at 11.10pm on May 10, but lost his majority support among state assemblymen 12 hours later when six of them defected.

Parti Warisan Sabah president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, whose party and its allies secured a majority with 35 of the 60 state seats, was sworn in at 9.15pm on May 12.

Musa, who was informed by the Governor that he was no longer chief minister effective May 12, is seeking a court a declaration that he is the legitimate chief minister and to nullify Shafie's appointment.

Purchase of RM5.7 billion train sets from China made without tender: RUM

New Straits Times31 May 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: The previous government had purchased train sets valued at RM5.7 billion direct from China without an open tender.

The Railwaymen’s Union of Malaya (RUM) president Abdul Razak Md Hassan said based on Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB)’s record, the purchase comprised 30 units of six car sets valued at RM1.9 billion acquired in 2012 and 10 units of Electric Train Set (ETS) valued at RM507 million in 2013.

The purchase will also involved nine ETS valued at RM1.1 billion and 13 sets of Diesel Multiple Units worth RM1.5 billion in 2019 as well as the maintenance of 38 units of six car sets valued at RM750 million during the purchase period.

“The purchases were made not according technical specifications and needs of KTMB. They were built based on the needs of the Transport Ministry and not KTMB as a need and user,” he said in a statement here today.

The union also said previous government’s action which focus on purchasing trains direct from China appeared as if Malaysia was only focused on trains from the country when the products of other countries have better quality from technical aspects.

Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali recently said there would no more direct negotiation and closed tender for future mega projects and they should carried out in an open and transparent manner.

In this regard, RUM also sought the cooperation of the government to review the phase 2 of Klang Valley Double Tracking (KVDT) project as it should be made through an open system.

This is because the contractor of KVDT phase 1 has delayed the opening of KL Sentral depot.

Bollywood producer wants to make Hindi movie called 'Malaysia's Saviour Mahathir'

Wednesday, 30 May 20184:21 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR: A Bollywood producer is planning to make a movie on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's triumphant return to office as Malaysia's prime minister, portraying him as a saviour in the campaign against corruption.

Raman Kumar, 73, said the film would focus on the political intrigues and how Dr Mahathir used “common sense, wisdom” and his 22-year experience as prime minister from 1981 to 2003, to campaign on an anti-corruption platform to helm the nation again.

“I want to direct and produce this movie because Dr Mahathir, at 92, has brought Malaysians together in what proved to be a victorious election (for him and his coalition).

“He’s indeed a marvel of strength, will and tenacity,” Raman told Bernama.

With the planned title, Malaysia's Saviour Mahathir, the movie will be shot in Hindi and dubbed into Malay and English.

Raman, who has produced more than 10 movies including five in Malaysia, said that Dr Mahathir's leadership in forging multiracial bonds got Malaysians to vote for a new government under Pakatan Harapan, which he chairs.

“I want to tell the intense story of the remaking of Malaysia after six decades of trials and tribulations, and the way Malaysians intensely felt the moment the (then) opposition won (the election),” he said.

Dr Mahathir steered Pakatan to the May 9 general election victory, bringing down the mighty Barisan Nasional coalition under his predecessor Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak who has since resigned as Barisan chairman and Umno president.

“Malaysia was reborn. May 9 was a new day. Malaysia has been given a new chance,” Raman said of the Mahathir-led Pakatan’s stunning election victory.

“I find Dr Mahathir a colourful character and we want to tell the story as it is. It involves a lot of research and we've engaged a Malaysian, who has a better understanding of Malaysian politics, to write the script,” said the producer, referring to M. Krishnamoorthy, a journalist as well as an associate professor.

Raman, who resides in the United Kingdom, Mumbai in India, as well as Malaysia, said the movie would feature Malaysian actors and part of the film crew would come from Mumbai. – Bernama

In a Viral Video Jamal Yunos Says Hidden Hands Out To Get Him

PETALING JAYA: Controversial politician Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos still insists that he will eventually turn himself in at the Ampang Police District headquarters, but appeals to the police to give him time following his no-show on Monday.
In a video message recorded in front of a group of palm oil trees, the Sungai Besar Umno division chief alleged there were efforts to target him if he showed up at the police station as he had initially promised.
“I believe there are hidden hands who have the power to instruct the police to target me.
“I am not rejecting the rule of law but I fear there are other serious actions awaiting me as I have been blacklisted from travelling overseas,” he said in the video, which is slightly more than seven-minutes long.
He feels that his rights as a Malaysian citizen are not preserved, added Jamal.
“My family and I have been targeted. The police are hunting me as if they were ordered by those in power,' he claimed.
“I am depicted as if I had done a very serious crime even betrayed the country, judging by how they are treating me,” he said.
He also realised that he had promised to go to the police station on Monday to settle the matter, which he described as a misunderstanding.
“When I was remanded in connection with a police report based on a picture of me armed with a pistol and carrying a child.
I deny this as it was not me. It was an edited photo.
“Just because of that report, I was remanded at the hospital for three days and I was even charged for breaking bottles of alcohol beverages and trespassing on gambling premises,” he said.
He added that his actions were politically motivated but he was never a criminal.
“I am merely a political and society leader who wants to expose matters of public interest and I paid the price with authorities taking action against me,” he said.

The "despicable" conduct by an Immigration officer caught on video hitting a foreigner at the Department's office in Johor Baru has led to his suspension

THE STAR

PETALING JAYA: The "despicable" conduct by an Immigration officer caught on video hitting a foreigner at the Department's office in Johor Baru has led to his suspension and a possible dismissal, says Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali.

The Immigration director-general said the officer was suspended immediately after the video went viral on social media.

"His actions have damaged the Department's image and reputation. It is clearly against our code of ethics of public service.

Mustafar added that the Department would never protect anyone who committed such an offence.

"We will never compromise against anyone who commits such despicable action. Among further action that can be taken is termination of employment," he said, adding that any action taken would be based on Public Service Regulations.

The incident occurred at about 9am Wednesday (May 30) at the Immigration Department office in Wisma Persekutuan, Johor Baru.

In the 10-second video, the immigration officer can be seen hitting a foreigner on the head and forcing his hand onto a scanner, while continuously berating him.

The video went viral almost immediately.

However, it is unclear why the officer lost his cool and acted in this manner.

PUTRAJAYA: The Government has set up a trust fund known as Tabung Harapan Malaysia (THM) for Malaysians to contribute towards alleviating the country's debt, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad (pic).

The Prime Minister said that the fund was set up to accept contributions from the public who want to help ease the Government's financial situation.

“When people realised how bad the Government's finances are, many came forward, expressing their willingness to contribute.

“We welcome their act of patriotism and would like to thank them for their generosity,” he said on Wednesday after chairing the Cabinet meeting.
Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng said that Malaysians can make donations to THM, which will be managed “systematically and transparently” by the Finance Ministry.

“Due to the recent economic development and the growing concern among the rakyat on the country's current debt position, there are signs of awareness from the rakyat to lend their support to the Government,” said Lim in a statement on Wednesday.

“The rakyat voluntarily want to share their earnings with the Government to help ease the burden,” he said.

Only donations in ringgit will be accepted.

THM contributions can be deposited into Maybank account number 566010626452.

“On behalf of the Government, I would like to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to all Malaysians for your support, concerns and willingness to help the Government in addressing the current economic situation,” said Lim.

Last week, Lim had said that the country's debt was now RM1 trillion, higher than the figure announced by the previous administration.
