KUALA LUMPUR: Former prime minister Najib Razak’s bodyguards and police escorts have been withdrawn as he is under investigation, says Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The prime minister said that because of the probe over 1MDB, Najib had lost the privileges accorded to former prime ministers.

“But if he is cleared, these privileges will be returned,” he said after breaking fast with police personnel in Bukit Aman this evening.

Earlier today, Najib claimed that his bodyguards and police escorts had been withdrawn by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government.

In a Facebook post, which featured pictures of him saying goodbye to the officers, Najib said only his aide de camp (ADC) remained.

A multibillion-dollar scandal at 1MDB, which was founded by Najib, is being investigated in at least six countries, including the US.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing.

Meanwhile, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun confirmed that the ADC for Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor had been retained.

He also said that not all of the bodyguards had been withdrawn. The number had been reduced.

Najib, Fuzi said, would still retain his driver.

“We will adhere to the standard operating procedures that have been set, where former PMs are accorded certain privileges.”

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak today claimed that his bodyguards and police escorts had been withdrawn by the Pakatan Harapan government.

In a post on Facebook, which showed pictures of him saying goodbye to the officers, Najib said only his aide de camp (ADC) remained.

“My family and I will never forget the service, friendship and loyalty they have shown over the past nine years, including some who had been with us for 14 years since when I was the deputy prime minister.

“It can’t be denied that they were emotional and some even cried when we said goodbye,” Najib said.

“I wished them all the best and hope they will continue to serve the new government with the same dedication and loyalty as when they were with me.”

Najib also expressed hope that the new government would take care of the welfare of all officers as they were dedicated to the government.

In November last year, there was massive criticism after the police withdrew the personal bodyguard service provided by the police Special Action Unit (UTK) for the protection of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

The withdrawal of the personal bodyguard service came a year after Putrajaya ended the contract of Mahathir’s cook and office assistant.

However, Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun later refuted claims that the government had withdrawn the personal bodyguard service provided by the police Special Action Unit (UTK) for Mahathir.

He said Mahathir still enjoyed the special right to official protection.

He said only a few ordinary members of the security escort team had been directed to return to the unit’s base to be posted for duties elsewhere.

“It is not true at all. The personal bodyguards, comprising UTK officers, are still serving with Dr Mahathir,” he said.

“Only some ordinary members have been called back for other assignments. This is a normal procedure,” Fuzi was quoted as saying.

He also said a female UTK officer is assigned to Mahathir’s wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
