RM114 million worth of cash in 35 bags from KL condo, say police

Police say the cash was in 26 denominations, while 37 other bags contain jewellery waiting to be evaluated.




KUALA LUMPUR: Police say a total of RM114 million was found in 35 of the 72 bags that were taken away from the Pavilion Residences condominium in Kuala Lumpur linked to former prime minister Najib Razak.

The 27 other bags contain jewellery and other valuable items, and police are still getting expert evaluators.

Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Department chief Amar Singh said 11 machines had been used in the counting process.

Police earlier announced that 72 bags and 284 boxes containing luxury handbags were seized during their operations, as part of an investigation into the 1MDB scandal.

In the first media conference to explain the raids today, Amar also dismissed pictures posted on social media purportedly showing seized goods and cash from Najib as false.

“All this is fake news. I have instructed police officers that they were not allowed to bring their mobile phones during their operations.

“There were no pictures taken during all our raids, other than by the official photographer.

“As such, these pictures are false. I appeal to the media not to spread such images as it would jeopardise our investigations,” he said.
