PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged government agencies to stop organising large-scale events to avoid wasteful spending.
This, the premier said, includes buying new clothes for events.
"For example, some agencies and departments when there are events, they will buy new clothes or new 'batik'.
"We should stop this. Should we stop the practice, the money can be better channeled to those in need," he said in his speech at the national-level 2022 Hawkers and Petty Traders Day Convention (Konvensyen Hari Penjaja dan Peniaga Kecil) (HPPK2022).
Anwar said new clothes for any occasion should be bought only when necessary, and for lower grade staff only and the B40 group.
"Do not give it to me, the ministers, or the secretary-general at ministries."
Anwar said such effort though considered a small matter by some, could benefit the poor.
"Before this, I refused to use a Mercedes (the car provided by the Prime Minister's Department) and some people said it was a small matter.
"The same goes with me not taking a salary. (But) if all these are stopped, the allocation can be used to aid the poor," he said
