Judge in MACC custody behind controversial verdict in high-profile inquest

PETALING JAYA: More details have emerged about a judge who was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday.FMT understands that MACC is looking into claims that the judge may have been “settling” cases for certain lawyers.
“There were many complaints by members of enforcement agencies regarding the judge’s decisions on previous cases,” a source close to the investigations said.
It said the judge had given at least one controversial verdict in a high-profile inquest.
FMT could not independently verify this, and MACC chief commissioner Latheefa Koya has not responded to queries.
However, she said today that the judge has been remanded for two days.
Yesterday, Latheefa, in confirming the arrest of the 45-year-old judge, said it was connected to the previous arrest of a lawyer, a deputy public prosecutor and policemen.
They were reportedly arrested for allegedly taking bribes to secure the release of illegal immigrants held by the authorities in Kuala Kubu Bharu.
News portal Malay Mail previously reported that the lawyer was “paying out” RM17,500 meant for the policemen and the DPP for the release of illegal immigrants when he was nabbed by MACC investigators.
The DPP was also found to be in possession of RM82,500, believed to be proceeds from other corrupt activities, it reported.
