In the 2.43pm incident, all the victims survived when they were hit by a Toyota Avanza multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in reverse due to the negligence of the driver.
Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said, preliminary investigations found that an accident occurred when a 16-year-old boy was asked by his mother to warm up the engine of the MPV which was in the parking space.
"While warming up the engine, the teenager in question pressed the gas pedal and changed the gear to the R button, causing it to reverse suddenly before colliding with a car in the adjacent parking lot.
"The MPV then crashed into some customers in the food court but luckily they managed to avoid the situation becoming more serious," he said in a statement here today.
The incident also went viral through a video clip recorded by the closed circuit camera system (CCTV) of the food court stall involved which was found to involve at least 11 customers including a baby.
Ketua Polis Daerah Melaka Tengah, Asisten Komisioner Christopher Patit berkata, siasatan awal mendapati kemalangan berlaku apabila seorang remaja lelaki berusia 16 tahun diminta ibunya untuk memanaskan enjin MPV itu yang berada di ruang parkir.
