SEOUL: South Korea on Tuesday reported more cases of foot and mouth disease (FMD) on local livestock farms, bringing the total number of cases this year to 10, according to officials.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the latest case was detected at a livestock farm in Yeongam district, about 300 kilometers south of Seoul.
The farms are located near the livestock farm that recorded the first FMD case of the year last week, the first such incident in nearly two years. Following the first outbreak, the government raised the crisis level for Yeongam and several adjacent areas to "serious," which is the highest level in the four-tier system, as well as started a nationwide FMD vaccination program, which was originally scheduled for next month.
FMD is an acute infectious viral disease that affects cattle, pigs, goats, and other split-hoofed animals. It does not affect humans.
