OTTAWA: Mark Carney, who will lead Canada as Prime Minister to replace Justin Trudeau, stressed that the country needs "new ideas and plans" to face the challenges of the future.
The former Governor of the Bank of Canada, who was elected to lead the Liberal Party on Sunday, said Canadians want positive leadership that will end divisions and help build a shared future.
In his maiden speech after being named Trudeau's successor, Carney also touched on Canada's relationship with the United States (US) in a firm tone. Canada is currently facing a trade war with its longtime ally, the US.
In this regard, Carney drew attention by warning that the US will destroy the way of life of Canadians if it succeeds in obtaining what they want from Canada.
Carney said America "wants our resources, our water, our land, our country".
"Think about it. If they succeed, they will destroy our way of life," Carney said.
He also compared the healthcare systems of the two countries by emphasizing that in the US, it is big business, while in Canada, it is a human right.
"America is a melting pot. Canada is a mosaic (cultural diversity where various ethnic, religious and cultural groups live together in a country and maintain their respective identities and cultures).
"America is not Canada. Canada will never be part of America in any form," he said.
Carney also stressed that retaliatory tariffs against the United States will remain in place until Washington agrees to fair free trade.
Regarding the threat of tariffs by US President Donald Trump, Carney affirmed:
"We can't let him (Trump) succeed and we won't," he said, before repeating the slogan, "We are a strong Canada."
He stressed that Canada is acting correctly by imposing retaliatory action against the US and will not withdraw the move until Washington shows a credible commitment to free and fair trade.
Carney also announced new plans to strengthen the economy and forge close ties with "reliable" trading partners while emphasizing the importance of securing Canada's borders.
Not to be outdone, Carney reiterated several of his campaign promises including the elimination of a carbon tax on households and the halt to capital gains tax hikes – which drew thunderous cheers from his supporters. - Agency
