New York judge sets sentencing date against Trump in kickbacks case

YORK: New York Judge Juan Merchan, who is handling the case related to former President Donald Trump's bribes, said the sentencing decision for the case would be on January 10.
According to a Xinhua report, the session is scheduled to take place at 9:30 a.m. in a courthouse in Lower Manhattan.
Judge Merchan also ordered Trump to attend the session either physically or through a virtual hearing. The decision on the method of attendance should be finalised by Jan 5.
In its ruling, Merchan stressed that there was no legal obstacle to proceeding with the sentencing ruling and stated that the settlement of the case would benefit all parties involved including the jury, defendants and plaintiffs.
Previously, the judge agreed to postpone the session, which was previously scheduled for Nov 26, 2024, without setting a new date.
In May 2024, a jury in New York found Trump guilty of 34 criminal charges, including falsifying business records to cover up the payment of kickbacks to a star during the 2016 presidential election campaign.
