MELAKA, Nov 10 -- Melaka police have denied allegations that went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp that inter-district travel in the state without proper reasons is allowed during the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) period that began yesterday.

Melaka deputy police chief, Datuk Sharul Lalli Masduki said permission to cross districts would only be given to those with valid reasons such as work, emergencies, and those who required medical attention or to buy daily necessities.

“Those who cross districts need to prove their reasons by presenting their employee pass or a letter from their employer or the police.

"Permission to cross districts is not given entirely but for specific situations only. For example, those who live in Jasin district but work in Melaka Tengah need to present a letter from their employer or an employee pass.

"If there is no valid reason or the need to go out, the public is advised to stay at home. The order is still subject to the National Security Council (MKN),” he told reporters after inspecting the roadblock at Ayer Keroh toll plaza today.

Claims that inter-district travel in Melaka during the CMCO period was allowed without any permission and agreed to by MKN and Melaka police on Saturday went viral on Facebook and WhatsApp yesterday.

Last Saturday, Senior Minister (Security Cluster), Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob reportedly said that the standard operating procedure (SOP) for this round of CMCO was the same as announced previously, including inter-district and inter-state travel not allowed except for emergencies and would require approval from the police.

Meanwhile, Sharul Lalli said 1,236 police personnel had been assigned to roadblock duties and monitoring as well as inspecting public areas to ensure that the CMCO SOP was adhered to.

He said eight roadblocks were set up in the state, especially at the entries into and exits out of Melaka with a strength of 144 personnel, including 66 from the Melaka police contingent and 34 from the Malaysian Armed Forces.

A total of 4,073 applications for inter-state travel during the CMCO period had been received by Melaka police until today.

He said 12,500 vehicles were checked at eight roadblocks in the state yesterday from 8 am until 12 midnight and out of the total, 87 vehicles were ordered to turn back for not having valid reasons to enter or exit Melaka in addition to not having police approval.
