Worldie gifts Utd much-needed win as Dortmund young gun breaks more records: CL Wrap
Manchester United moved within a point of qualifying for the next round of the Champions League, thanks to a comprehensive 4-1 win over group minnows Istanbul Basaksehir.
The Turkish team surprisingly won the reverse fixture last time around but there was no repeat at Old Trafford as Bruno Fernandes settled the nerves early on with a stunning half-volley from the edge of the box
United’s talisman double the lead and his personal tally minutes later after making the most of a shocking goalkeeping error to roll the ball into an empty net.
He passed up the opportunity for a first-half hat-trick by handing a penalty to Marcus Rashford to convert before substitute Dan James added a fourth to round out the win after a stunning free kick temporarily cut the deficit.
RENNES 1-2 CHELSEA
Chelsea reached the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday with two matches to spare after a late Olivier Giroud strike gave the Blues a 2-1 win over Rennes.
The France forward’s powerful header in stoppage time snatched the points for Frank Lampard’s side after Serhou Guirassy had levelled Callum Hudson-Odoi’s first-half opener.
Chelsea were joined in the next round by Group E rivals Sevilla after the Spanish side won 2-1 at Krasnodar.
Both sides are on 10 points, nine ahead of third-placed Krasnodar and will do battle for first place come the end of the group stage.
Chelsea can concentrate on domestic duties, with Premier League leaders Tottenham Hotspur visiting Stamford Bridge at the weekend, thanks to out-of-favour Giroud, who has been tipped to leave in January as he seeks more regular football ahead of next summer’s European Championships.
DYNAMO KYIV 0-4 BARCELONA
Barcelona qualified for the Champions League last 16 with two games to spare on Tuesday as Martin Braithwaite scored twice in a 4-0 win over Dynamo Kiev.
Lionel Messi was among a handful of key players rested for Barca but Braithwaite’s double, as well as goals from Sergino Dest and substitute Antoine Griezmann saw the Catalans safely through, joining Juventus in progressing from Group G.
PSG 1-0 RB LEIPZIG
A nervy Paris Saint-Germain were outplayed for long spells but held on after an early Neymar penalty to beat RB Leipzig 1-0 on Tuesday and revive their Champions League campaign.
Last season’s runners-up had lost two of their opening three matches in Group H and would have been staring at an early exit from the competition had they lost again to the Germans behind closed doors at the Parc des Princes.
Yet Neymar’s 11th-minute spot-kick proved enough for PSG as Leipzig failed to convert any of the chances that came their way.
Both sides are now level on six points with two games still to come, with Manchester United three points clear at the top of the section after easing to a 4-1 victory over Istanbul Basakeshir on Tuesday.
