KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 28 – The political crisis earlier this year has turned UMNO and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) from political enemies into allies who are now in a partnership, said Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said although there were those uncomfortable with the situation and viewed it as UMNO being forced to stay in the cooperation, it should be seen as a test for Malay Muslim leaders in the country including from PAS to strengthen their ties.

"In front of us lie vast opportunities for us to unite the Malay Muslim community in the country which has experienced political divisions over the years.

"Do realise that the political crisis in the country at the beginning of this year has brought together the political leadership in Bersatu, UMNO and PAS into the same political alignment.

"To me, this strengthening of ties is a preliminary step towards creating a greater unity of Muslims," he said in his policy speech at the Bersatu General Assembly today.

He said the Malays in this country would be forever divided and Muslim unity would be mere rhetoric if the existing leaders only prioritised the interests of small groups and their own parties.

“Malay unity will always remain an elusive dream. It will never materialise in our lifetime. What is wrong if we seize the opportunity presented by Allah through his test to strengthen the unity among us?” he said.

As such, he said it was good if all the leaders of the Malays and Muslims in the country could unite in a great congregation to create political stability in the country.

At the same time, the prime minister explained that he and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi realised from a four-eyed meeting that the relationship between Bersatu and UMNO should be improved, even if it was not an easy task.

He said in this regard, steps to strengthen ties between the two parties and PAS would be taken to ensure that no divisions and clashes would occur between them in the 15th general election.

In a speech that took almost an hour, Muhyiddin also explained that Bersatu would continue to take a moderate approach in upholding Islam as the federal religion in the country.

It would be done by continuing to respect the right of non-Muslims to embrace and practise their respective religions in peace and harmony, he said

"Islam in our country must also continue to function as a civilising force, namely the power that shapes the thinking and civilisation of Muslims in this archipelago region," he said.

At the same time, the prime minister guaranteed justice and equality for all citizens and that prosperity would be enjoyed fairly and equitably, without anyone being left behind.
