MELAKA: The Melaka Bird Park in Ayer Keroh, which has been closed since 2019, is expected to reopen to visitors next March at the latest.

Chairman of the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council (MPHTJ) Datin Sapiah Haron said the work to renovate and upgrade the bird park was being carried out by a new contractor appointed to manage the operation of the bird park.

He said the Melaka Bird Park will be one of the tourist hotspots especially in the Year of Visiting Melaka 2024 (TMM 2024).

"More than 200 species involving thousands of birds will be housed in the Melaka Bird Park and many new elements are being made such as bird cages, waterfalls, feeding areas and bridges.

"The concept highlighted in the bird park is the same as before, which is that birds are released in the area and visitors can have a close look and hold and feed them," he told reporters here today.

He said this after the August 2023 MPHTJ Administration Monthly Meeting and the MPHTJ-Level Flag Campaign Launch Ceremony here today.

Meanwhile, Sapiah said the Independence Day celebration will be held at Dataran Sejarah in Ayer Keroh on August 30, scheduled to be officiated by Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

He said various programs were organized in conjunction with the celebration including the MADANI Agro Sale by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) for five days starting on August 30.

"The MADANI Agro sale involved 106 traders' tents selling various agricultural and food products. On the eve of independence, there was a fireworks show and artist performances," he said and added that about 10,000 visitors were expected to attend the celebration.
