Man gets 40 years jail and 20 lashes for raping stepdaughter in Menggatal

KOTA KINABALU: A man has been sentenced to 40 years jail and 20 strokes of the rotan for raping his stepdaughter at a house in Menggatal.
Sessions Court judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad meted out the sentence on Tuesday after the 45-year-old man pleaded guilty to two charges under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code.
The local man was sentenced to 20 years in jail and 10 strokes of the cane for raping the girl when she was 12 in December 2015.
He received another 20 years and 10 strokes for repeating the crime at the same house in February 2016.
The accused will be serving the sentences consecutively.
In mitigation, the man pleaded for a lenient sentence as it was his first offence.
His counsel PJ Pereira said he had cooperated with the police during his detention.
However, prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Lim Swee Beng, who stood in for Deputy Public Prosecutor Hafizah Zahidah Abdullah, called for severe punishment.
Lim said the accused had committed an abhorrent crime and traumatised the girl.
