ALOR SETAR: A man was burned to death in his car after it caught fire during a crash along the North South Expressway.

Kubang Pasu OCPD Supt Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said the victim had been driving towards Bukit Kayu Hitam, a town on the border with Thailand, at about 10am on March 26.

"A witness claimed that the car exploded and the fire spread quickly, causing the car to crash by the left side of the road," he said.

"So far we have identified the car owner as Tan Kia Sock, 71, from Taman Golf in Alor Setar. But the actual identity of the driver has yet to be determined as the body is fully burnt," added Supt Mohd Ismail.

Bukit Kayu Hitam Fire and Rescue Department chief Mohd Iqwan Ehshan said his team received a call at 10am and arrived at the scene less than 10 minutes later.

"We took about four more minutes to control the fire and the victim's corpse was extracted at about 1pm," he said.

Mohd Iqwan also denied that the fire was caused by a faulty power bank.

"The department and police are conducting our investigations, and we hope there will be no further speculation until we are done. So far, the witness informed us that the car suddenly exploded while it was on the move," he said.
