BENTONG: All cars and motorcycles with expired road tax but within a time frame of below three years will get a reprieve with immediate effect.

In the first such "whitening" exercise nationwide, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai (pic) said owners could renew their insurance without going through Puspakom inspections and other normal procedures.

Liow said they only need to pay for the insurance charges at a discounted rate.

"Once that is done, they can go to any JPJ offices to renew the road tax

"So I urge all owners with expired road tax not exceeding three years to seize this opportunity to get valid ones," he said during the launching of the Transport Ministry's carnival in Dataran Bentong here on Saturday.

The move is expected to benefit many in the lower income groups, who are driving or riding with expired road tax.

Statistics from the Road Transport Department showed some 29 million vehicles were registered.

Out of this, only 19 million vehicles have had their road tax renewed every year.

About 95% of those with expired road tax were motorcyclists.

Liow, who is also Bentong MP, said presently, 125cc motorcycles with expired road tax need to go for Puspakom inspection and pay an insurance fee of between RM100 and RM140.

He said with this move, they only need to pay RM80.

"So it is now cheaper and less hassle. But do not delay as we cannot allow this exercise to go on forever," he said.

Earlier, Liow joined thousands of people who turned up for the carnival for a light work out and a 5km fun run.
