JITRA: Police arrested a 16-year-old boy on Tuesday for allegedly impregnating his 13-year-old girlfriend.

The girl, who is a school dropout, is now 26 weeks into her pregnancy.

The boy is a student at a skills training centre in the district, and lives in the same housing area as his young girlfriend.

Kubang Pasu district police chief Superintendent Mohd Ismail Ibrahim said they learned of the situation after receiving a call from a doctor at a health clinic in Bukit Kayu Hitam on March 20.

The doctor reported that she was carrying out an examination on a pregnant young girl, and that her family was unaware of her condition.

“The girl had gone to the clinic with her family and boyfriend for a medical check-up.

“However, the doctor who treated her suspected something amiss and contacted the Bukit Kayu Hitam police station before referring the case to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital,” he said.

Mohd Ismail spoke to reporters on the matter after the 211th Police Day celebration at the Kubang Pasu district police headquarters here today.

He said based on statements recorded from the girl, her relationship with the boy began three years ago, when she was 10.

Mohd Ismail added that the girl also claimed that they had sexual intercourse several times, including at her house when her parents were not at home.

“Based on the report, we arrested the boy and had him remanded for five days until today. His remand will be extended to facilitate our investigation,” he added.

He also disclosed that following the pregnancy revelation, the girl’s parents discussed the matter and are now arranging for the teens to be married.

Mohd Ismail said the boy is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.

On the Police Day celebration, Mohd Ismail said 75 policemen and civilians received recognition letters from the police. Recipients included two media practitioners from Sinar Harian and Harian Metro. © New Straits Times Press
