KARNATAKA: A man died while an Israeli female tourist and an Indian woman were gang-raped by three men recently near a popular UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern India.
According to district police chief Ram Arasiddi, the incident occurred when an Indian man and the two women were stargazing with two other male tourists in the city of Hampi.
They were then attacked by three men following an argument over money. The attacker pushed the Indian man and the two male tourists into the river before raping the two women.
Two of the men, including a US national, managed to escape while the body of a third man was recovered on Saturday morning.
Police have arrested two suspects believed to be involved in the attack and further investigations are ongoing.
Attacks on women in India gained international attention last year after the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a hospital in Kolkata.
The incident also sparked public anger and mass protests over the issue of women's safety in the country.
