KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has imposed a compound of RM10,000 each on comedians Harith Iskander and Cecelia Yap for uploading offensive content and comments related to Islam on Facebook on Jan 18.
MCMC has imposed a compound of RM10,000 on Harith Iskander and Cecelia Yap for uploading obscene content related to Islam on Facebook.
The content has been deleted by Meta, while their account closure application is being evaluated.
The action was taken under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 based on the provisions before the amendment of the act.
In a statement on Wednesday, MCMC said the action was imposed under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, based on the provisions before the amendment of the act which came into effect on Feb 11, 2025. The content was taken down by Meta after it was found to be in violation of Facebook's community guidelines, while the application to close the accounts of both individuals is currently under review by the company.
"After receiving a request from MCMC, Meta took down the content after it was found to be in violation of Facebook's community guidelines.
"In addition, an application has also been made for the closure of the Facebook accounts belonging to the two individuals. The application is now under research
and Meta's assessment," said MCMC.
In another development, MCMC will submit an investigation paper to the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) tomorrow over a video mocking Hinduism uploaded to the TikTok account of ERA FM radio station.
Following the case, Astro's top management was summoned yesterday, and an investigation was opened under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"An investigation paper was opened under section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, based on the provisions after the amendment of the act.
"The recording of the statements of the parties involved was made to assist in the investigation," MCMC said.
MCMC also submitted a Notice of Intent to suspend Lese to the licensee of ERA FM radio station, with a period of 30 days to submit a response before any further action is taken.
