 Double Six tragedy: The final report of the Sabah Air crash will be revealed next week - PM

PM Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday said that the report, which will be released in full next week, has been demanded by the people of Sabah for the past 47 years.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has agreed to reveal the final report of the Sabah Air disaster on 6 June 1976 which killed the main leaders of the state of Sabah at the time, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar on Wednesday said that the report, which will be released in full by next week, has been demanded by the people of Sabah for the past 47 years.

"So far, the Government has not decided to publicize [this report] under Section 2C of the Official Secrets Act 1972.


Today, the cabinet took into account the views expressed by the people of Sabah for many years and also the demands made by the families of the heirs who want detailed information.

"It is in line with the policy of openness and transparency practiced by the Unity Government. Therefore, we decided that the final report of the Sabah Air flight accident investigation on June 6, 1976 will be declassified , " said Anwar, in a press conference following the cabinet meeting, in Putrajaya, on Wednesday.

Anwar added, the cabinet agreed to take the step even after taking into account some complications that may arise, including in terms of legislation.

However, he insisted, the public, especially the people of Sabah and the next of kin of the victims, have the right to know the details of the crash report, which should not be still classified under Section 2C of the Official Secrets Act 1972.

The crash, also known as the Double Six Tragedy, killed all 11 passengers, including the then Chief Minister of Sabah, Tun Fuad Stephens; State Finance Minister Datuk Salleh Sulong; State Minister of Local Government and Housing, Datuk Peter Mojuntin and State Minister of Public Works and Communications, Datuk Chong Tien Vun.
