SHAH ALAM: MCA president, Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong described the allegation that his party was involved in an attempt to overthrow the government under the leadership of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as nonsense and baseless.
Ka Siong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Ayer Hitam, said that the allegations reported by a news portal on Monday were untrue and that he was not involved in the movement.
"But for me personally as MCA President and my party, we do not know about the attempt to overthrow the government as reported.
"We will also not support such a move that requires any elected member of Parliament to 'sacrifice' their seat to force a by-election," he said in a post on his official Facebook on Monday.
On Monday, a news portal report through an anonymous information source claimed that there are some Barisan Nasional (BN) members of Parliament who participated in the movement to topple the Unity Government.
In the meantime, Ka Siong said, his party takes the allegations seriously and the media should report news based on facts and information that has been checked.
"A news portal that relies on anonymous information sources is seen trying to fabricate news that there is a movement to challenge the unity government led by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
"This is a despicable act and should be condemned. I consider this report to be nonsense and also baseless.
"Is it logical that we want to support members of Parliament who have won and been elected by the people, then we make an attempt to force a by-election (PRK) or someone to resign to allow a by-election to be held?" the question.
According to him, his party's priority at this point is to focus on efforts to restore the economy and fight for the interests of the people.
"The priority now is to support policies and strategies towards the recovery of the country's economy through political stability according to the wishes of the people in the 15th General Election (GE15)," he said.
