KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and the Astro Security Department are cooperating to monitor business premises that show entertainment broadcasts using illegal streaming devices.
Wangsa Maju District Police Chief, Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said, the community needs to stop using unauthorized devices because they are illegal.
He explained that a visit program to several locations of business premises that were detected using illegal streaming equipment, was held on Tuesday.
"The Copyright (Amendment) Act 2022 which was published in the Government Gazette on 10 February 2022 has come into force from 17 March this year.
"If convicted, individuals who violate the act can be fined up to RM200,000 or imprisoned for up to 20 years or both.
"This amendment introduces several changes to the act aimed at enforcing the law against copyright infringement through streaming technology," he told Astro AWANI.
He explained that it aims to give awareness to business premises that show entertainment broadcasts using paid services such as Astro or other service providers, that unauthorized use is an offence.
