Malaysian paralympic badminton player and his 25-year-old Thai female companion detained after 500m chase at CIQ

Paralympian and Thai companion held during border check

ALOR SETAR: A member of the Malaysian paralympic team has been detained for attempting to smuggle out a Thai woman at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam, near here.
Bukit Kayu Hitam immigration chief Nar Azaman Ibrahim said the 28-year-old paralympic badminton player and his 25-year-old female companion were detained at the parking lot of the duty free complex on March 26.
“They were intercepted after a 500m pursuit from one of the immigration departure lanes at the ICQS complex.
“Earlier, they were ordered to stop their car and go to the supervisor’s office for further checks on one of their travel documents,” he said.
Nar Azaman said the Mercedez Benz C200 driven by the paralympian has been seized.
He said the driver, who claimed that he was a badminton player in the Malaysian paralympic team, could be charged for harbouring an illegal migrant and for obstructing a government officer from carrying out his duty.
The athlete was released on police bail pending further investigation of the case.
Nar Azaman said the investigation into the woman revealed that her passport had false departure and arrival stamps.
She has been remanded for 14 days.
