Nur Jazlan: Dr M's comments may be 'seditious, treacherous'

KUALA LUMPUR: Action will be taken against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad if he continues to make comments that could seditious, even treacherous, in nature, said Deputy Home Minister Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed (pic).

He said the former premier may be committing sedition by going against the Constitution in urging for the Rulers' involvement in his bid to topple Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

"Isn't that a seditious matter? He is saying to the public that he is going 'outside the box' and beyond the constitution. Isn't this country governed by the constitution?" Nur Jazlan told reporters at the Parliament lobby.

Nur Jazlan said everyone have to abide by the Constitution.

"What he is advocating can be considered seditious, treacherous even.

"The more he talks, the more mistakes he will make and more for the police to investigate.  If it results in proof that he has contravened the law, then we will take action," he said.

Asked if the government was giving leeway to  Dr Mahathir simply because he was once the Prime Minister, Nur Jazlan said that was not the case.

"If he goes on saying things that can trigger an offence, for example under the Sedition Act or act of treason,  we will take action.

"If he says he has got to go beyond the Constitution then we will take action, but at the moment we treat it like a political stunt," he added
