KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was acquitted by the High Court here on Monday, on 47 charges of corruption, breach of trust and money laundering (AMLA) involving Akalbudi Foundation funds.

Judge, Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah (now Judge of the Court of Appeal) ruled this after Deputy Public Prosecutor, Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar informed that the Attorney General's Department (AGC) had accepted the Deputy Prime Minister's representation, to drop all charges.

During the proceedings, Mohd Dusuki said the prosecution wanted to stop all proceedings against Ahmad Zahid, 70, based on 11 reasons, in accordance with provision 145 of the Federal Constitution.



According to him, on 29 January, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) informed the AGC that, further investigation should be made regarding the case.

"It is not fair to postpone the trial of the case for an indefinite period, so we request that the accused be released without acquittal (DNAA)," he said.

However, lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik who represented Ahmad Zahid objected to the application and requested that his client be released and released (DNA).

Ahmad Zahid, 70, has sent a 200-page letter of representation to the Attorney General's Department (AGC) as a basis for consideration for the charges against him to be dropped.

The first representation letter was submitted in January while the second, sent to the AGC with new facts and evidence, in February.

Ahmad Zahid who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development was tried on 47 charges, namely eight charges of corruption, 12 breach of trust and 27 money laundering involving Akalbudi Foundation funds.
